To remove saved Microsoft Edge password values that Edge can no longer decrypt, configure the mandatory DeletingUndecryptablePasswordsEnabled policy. Enabling it—or leaving it unset—deletes affected values; this can cause permanent data loss. Disabling it preserves those values but leaves password-manager functionality broken. Decide which outcome your organization accepts before deployment.
What the policy does—and what it does not do
DeletingUndecryptablePasswordsEnabled, displayed in Microsoft’s policy reference as “Enable deleting undecryptable passwords,” applies to passwords saved in Edge’s built-in password manager. It targets only values Edge cannot decrypt; working saved passwords are not affected. Microsoft says undecryptable values do not become decryptable on their own. This is not a general password reset or a promise of recoverable cleanup. Microsoft Edge policy reference (last updated May 22, 2026).

Choose the outcome before you deploy
| Policy state | Effect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Enabled, or unset | Edge deletes saved password values it cannot decrypt; working values remain untouched. | Affected values are lost, potentially permanently. |
| Disabled | Edge retains the undecryptable password data. | Password-manager functionality for that data remains broken. |
Microsoft explicitly warns that enabling the policy or leaving it unset means users with undecryptable passwords will lose them. Tell affected users what to expect and follow your organization’s credential-recovery and deployment procedures. Do not promise that deleted passwords can be restored.

Check platform, version, and profile applicability
- Supported: Windows and macOS with Edge 132 or later; iOS with Edge 139 or later.
- Unsupported: Android.
- The policy supports mandatory configuration, not recommended configuration, and can be applied per profile.
- Profiles signed in with a Microsoft account are excluded.
- Policy changes do not refresh dynamically; Edge must restart for the policy to take effect.
These support and application details are from Microsoft’s policy reference. Check the current documentation and target devices before rollout because support details can change.

Deploy the setting with Intune
Use Edge Administrative Templates when available
Microsoft recommends configuring Edge policies through an Intune Administrative Templates profile when the required setting is present in the tenant’s template catalog. The specific policy’s availability in every tenant’s current catalog is not established, so search the catalog rather than assuming it appears.
- In the Intune admin center, create or edit an Administrative Templates profile for the relevant platform and target group.
- Search for Enable deleting undecryptable passwords or
DeletingUndecryptablePasswordsEnabled. - Set the policy to Enabled only if you intend to delete undecryptable values. Assign the profile to the appropriate users or devices under your organization’s deployment process.
- After policy delivery, restart Edge on affected devices. Confirm policy application using your normal endpoint-management checks.
Use Edge ADMX ingestion and custom OMA-URI if the setting is absent
For Edge policies not available in the built-in templates, Microsoft documents ingesting the Edge ADMX and configuring the policy with a custom OMA-URI. Follow Microsoft’s current steps for obtaining and ingesting the Edge ADMX, then use the policy’s documented setting name, data type, and value. Microsoft Edge MDM and Intune configuration guidance.

Do not configure this same Edge policy in both an Administrative Templates profile and a custom OMA-URI profile with different values. Microsoft warns that the result can be unpredictable. Use one authoritative configuration path for the setting.

Verify rollout and handle problems
- Policy is unavailable in the template catalog: Use the documented Edge ADMX-ingestion and custom OMA-URI method if your management setup supports it.
- Users still see the old behavior: Confirm policy delivery and applicable profile, then restart Edge; the setting does not refresh dynamically.
- Some users are unaffected: Check platform and Edge version, and confirm whether the profile is signed in with a Microsoft account, which is excluded.
- Undecryptable passwords disappeared: This is the expected result when the policy is enabled or unset. Do not represent the deletion as reversible; use your organization’s credential recovery procedures.
