Those actions have different effects: deleting a message affects your copy, while stopping forwarding changes a rule for messages that arrive later.
First, choose what you want to change
| Your goal | Use this action | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Remove an email from your inbox but keep it | Archive | Moves it out of the inbox while retaining it in Gmail’s All Mail. |
| Remove an email from your account’s active mail | Delete | Moves it to Gmail Trash, where it may be recoverable for a limited time. |
| Remove one email from a conversation | Delete that message | Targets one message rather than the whole conversation. |
| Stop forwarding future email | Change or remove the forwarding setting or rule | Affects future messages handled by that configuration. |
| Remove a forwarded chat message for everyone | Check the current help for that messaging service | Deleting your own copy should not be assumed to delete other people’s copies. |
How to delete a forwarded email in Gmail
Delete a whole conversation
- In Gmail, select the conversation you want to remove and choose Delete.
- Gmail moves the deleted message or conversation to Trash; it is not immediately erased permanently.
Google says messages can be restored from Trash for up to 30 days after deletion. You can also permanently delete a message from Trash sooner. After the 30-day period, Google says it cannot be recovered. Google’s Gmail Help explains how to delete or recover messages.

Delete only one message in a conversation
- Open the conversation.
- Open the More menu for the specific message.
- Choose Delete this message.
This separate action removes one message instead of deleting the entire conversation. See Google’s instructions for deleting messages for the current Gmail flow.

Find the right message before deleting
If the forwarded email is hard to locate, Gmail search supports filters such as sender, date range, keywords, and attachments. Use a search to narrow the results, then confirm you have selected the intended message before deleting it.
Archive instead if you only want it out of the inbox
In Gmail, Archive removes a message from the inbox but keeps it in All Mail. Delete moves it to Trash. Choose Archive if you may want the message later; do not empty Trash or choose permanent deletion if recovery matters. Google details the difference in its Gmail archive and delete guidance.
How to stop automatic email forwarding
Turn off forwarding in the account or service where it was configured. Deleting an email already received does not remove the forwarding rule, and changing a rule does not retract messages already delivered to another recipient.
Gmail
- Open Gmail settings and go to Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Disable forwarding or remove the forwarding address, as appropriate for your setup.
- Review how Gmail handles its own copy. Google’s guidance describes options such as keeping the copy in the inbox or marking it read.
Other mail clients and POP/IMAP settings may also affect where copies appear. If forwarding continues, check whether it was set up outside Gmail. Follow Google’s forwarding troubleshooting guidance.
iCloud Mail
Apple’s iCloud Mail rules can forward, delete, or otherwise manage messages that match criteria you choose. To stop a rule from forwarding future messages, review and edit or remove the matching rule in iCloud Mail settings. Apple says new or changed rules may take up to 15 minutes to take effect. Apple’s iCloud Mail guide describes rules.
Proton’s Gmail import forwarding workflow
If forwarding was configured through Proton’s Gmail import flow, the removal path is specific to that setup: go to Settings → All settings → Import via Easy Switch, find the entry in History, choose Delete forward, and confirm. This is not a universal Proton forwarding control. See Proton’s instructions for stopping Gmail forwarding to Proton.

First identify the messaging service and whether you want to delete your own copy or retract a message you sent. Those are not necessarily the same action. The available evidence does not establish current WhatsApp deletion labels, time limits, or effects on every participant, so do not assume deleting a forwarded message from your view erases copies held by the sender or other recipients. Check the service’s current official help before relying on a deletion-for-everyone feature.
