The desktop operating system and applications run in the data center or cloud, and the user’s PC, tablet or thin client displays and controls them remotely. Citrix puts it concisely: “Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is the hosting of desktop environments on a central server.”
How VDI works
A user signs in from an endpoint and connects over a network. A connection broker directs that connection to a suitable virtual desktop. The desktop itself is a virtual machine on server hardware, created and managed by a hypervisor. The user interacts with the remote desktop through the endpoint, while the work happens on the server side.

The core components
- Hypervisor: creates and manages the virtual machines that host the desktops.
- Connection broker: assigns or locates a desktop for each user and routes the connection to it.
- Endpoint: the device the user sits at. Citrix lists PCs, tablets and thin client terminals. A thin client is not required, and what works depends on the deployment.
What a real deployment also needs
Microsoft’s Azure architecture guidance for virtual desktops names networking, identity, host pools and session hosts, endpoint devices, storage and monitoring as parts of an implementation. Treat that as one example, not a universal parts list. Brokers, protocols, hypervisors and clouds differ between products and organizations.
Persistent versus nonpersistent desktops
Persistence is a choice made per deployment, and it is the main design decision after “where does this run?”
#1 Best Overall
- AMD G-Series Dual-Core GX-212JC Processor 1.2 GHz( cache)
- 4GB SDRAM DDR3
- 0 GB 1 rpm 8 GB Solid State Drive
- Integrated
- Max Memory: 8 GB
| Aspect | Persistent | Nonpersistent |
|---|---|---|
| User experience | The user returns to the same desktop, with changes, applications and personalization retained | The user draws a desktop from a standardized pool, sometimes a fresh instance at each sign-in |
| Management | Closer to maintaining individual machines | Pooled and standardized; images are commonly reset or replaced |
| Trade-off | Personalization and retention | Consistency and simpler pooled management |
How user data and profiles are actually handled depends on the implementation, so a nonpersistent pool does not by itself mean users lose their files.
VDI versus DaaS
VDI describes the architecture: desktops delivered from virtual machines. Desktop as a service (DaaS) is a cloud service model for delivering virtual desktops, in which a provider runs more of the hosting and service components. The customer may still manage identities, applications, policies or user data.

- Whether playing DVD-quality full-screen video or connecting specialized USB 2.0 devices
The split varies by service. In Azure Virtual Desktop, for example, Microsoft’s documentation describes some connection components as provider-managed, while session hosts and other parts can remain with the customer or a partner. Check each service’s responsibility model rather than assuming a standard one.

Where VDI is hosted
VDI can run on premises or be delivered through cloud services. When comparing options, these are the axes that matter:
- Location and service model: on-premises, cloud-hosted infrastructure, or DaaS.
- Management responsibility: who operates the broker or control plane, host infrastructure, session hosts, identity, storage and monitoring.
- Persistence: dedicated desktops or pooled ones.
- Workload needs: personalization, application compatibility, graphics or compute demands, and how many sessions run at once.
- Connectivity and resilience: network quality, access paths and recovery requirements.
None of these makes one approach the best choice for every organization.

What centralization offers
- Desktop management in one place rather than on each device.
- Access to a desktop from different compatible endpoints, which supports remote and hybrid work.
- Standardized environments, especially with pooled desktops.
What it does not remove
- Network dependence: users need connectivity to reach their desktops.
- Capacity planning: compute, storage, identity and service operations all have to be sized and monitored.
- Security work: centralizing desktops is not automatically secure. Endpoint access, accounts, sessions, network paths and the hosted systems still need controls.

VDI is not just a desktop in a browser
Opening a web page that looks like a desktop is not VDI. VDI means a full desktop operating system running in a virtual machine on central infrastructure and delivered remotely. Some services let you reach a virtual desktop through a browser, but the defining feature is where the desktop runs.
