The PATH environment variable is a list of directories that the operating system searches when you type a command without giving its full location. Microsoft’s PowerShell documentation puts it this way: “The $Env:PATH environment variable contains a list of folder locations that the operating system searches for executable files.” If a program’s folder is on that list, you can run it by name from a terminal.
What PATH actually stores
PATH holds directories, not individual programs. Adding a folder to PATH lets a shell find any executable inside it by command name. Adding a path to a single .exe file does not do what most people expect.

Entries are joined into one string with a delimiter:
- Windows: semicolons, for example
C:WindowsSystem32;C:Tools. - Non-Windows systems in PowerShell: colons, as the PowerShell documentation describes.
How a command is resolved in Command Prompt
Microsoft describes the path command as setting or displaying the command search path. Three rules govern lookup:
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- The current directory is searched first.
- The directories in PATH are then checked in the order listed, so an earlier entry wins over a later one.
- When several files share a name, extension precedence applies. The documented default order is
.exe,.com,.bat, then.cmd.
This is why two installed tools with the same command name can behave unexpectedly: whichever folder appears earlier in PATH is the one that runs.
Viewing PATH
Command Prompt
Enter path with no arguments to display the command path for that shell.
PowerShell
Enter $Env:PATH to see the value for the current process. PowerShell’s environment provider manages variables for the current console.

Changing PATH: session versus persistent
Scope is the most common source of confusion. Compare the three levels:
| Method | Scope | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
path / set in Command Prompt |
Current cmd environment | That shell session |
setx |
Persistent user environment by default; system environment with /m |
Future command windows only, not the one you ran it in |
| Windows Environment Variables interface | User or system | Persistent; applies to newly started programs |
In Command Prompt, the path command accepts semicolon-separated directories. Including %PATH% in the new value keeps the existing entries for that shell, for example path C:Tools;%PATH% (this puts your folder first) or path %PATH%;C:Tools (this puts it last).
Why a new PATH sometimes doesn’t show up
Windows processes inherit their environment from the parent process that launched them. A terminal opened before a persistent change keeps its older copy, and a new terminal started from an application that itself has an old environment can inherit the stale value too. Since setx affects only future command windows, the usual fix is to close the terminal and open a fresh one, restarting the parent application if necessary.

Caution: don’t rewrite PATH with setx
Microsoft documents that setx writes to the master environment in the registry. It also warns of two behaviors that make it risky for PATH:
- Manipulating an existing variable expands and removes variable references, so entries written as references (such as
%SystemRoot%) are replaced by their literal values. - Assigned content over 1024 characters is cropped. A long PATH can lose entries silently.
For ordinary interactive edits, use the Windows Environment Variables interface (open System Properties, Advanced tab, Environment Variables). If you must script a change, save the current value first and check the result afterward.
An advanced detail: current directory and executable search
Executable lookup on Windows has more to it than PATH. The Win32 documentation for NeedCurrentDirectoryForExePathW describes the NoDefaultCurrentDirectoryInExePath variable, which affects whether the current directory is searched. Microsoft recommends calling the API instead of reading that variable directly, because its registry location can change. You don’t need this for everyday PATH work.
