The likely intended term is Microsoft AI Builder, a capability within Microsoft Power Platform for adding AI features to apps and business processes. Microsoft lists uses such as processing forms, detecting objects, making predictions, classifying text, and recognizing information. Microsoft’s Power Platform licensing guide describes the capability and its scenarios.
What is AI Builder in Power Platform?
AI Builder is a set of AI capabilities used in Power Apps and Power Automate, rather than a separate standalone product called “Power AI Builder.” Microsoft Learn also describes using AI Builder features in agents and agent flows. Organizations can use built-in or custom AI capabilities to interpret information and automate tasks within their business applications and processes.

Examples in Microsoft’s documentation include processing forms and documents, analyzing receipts or invoices, reading text with optical character recognition (OCR), detecting objects in images, classifying text, extracting entities or key phrases, identifying sentiment or language, translating text, reading business cards, and generating predictions. Which features are available and how they are metered can depend on the current product and licensing terms.
What can AI Builder do in Power Apps and Power Automate?
Process documents and extract information
Document-processing features can extract information from forms and other documents, including receipts, invoices, identity documents, and insurance cards. This can help move information into an app or workflow without requiring a person to re-enter every field.

Analyze images and text
Image-related scenarios include object detection and image description. Text capabilities include OCR, classification, sentiment analysis, language detection, key phrase and entity extraction, and translation. Business card reading is another documented scenario.
Make predictions
Prediction features can be incorporated into an application or process to estimate an outcome from data. The documentation lists prediction as a scenario; it does not establish a general accuracy level or performance guarantee.

How do AI Builder credits and licensing work?
AI Builder use is subject to licensing and capacity rules, which Microsoft has changed over time. In its licensing overview, last updated September 8, 2026, Microsoft says Power Apps and Power Automate AI Builder features may consume AI Builder credits or Copilot Credits. Usage is tracked and reset monthly, and unused credits do not roll over. Check Microsoft’s AI Builder licensing overview for the current rules that apply to your environment.
Building and testing versus running a model
Microsoft states: “Building custom and testing models (including prompts) doesn’t require AI Builder credits or Copilot Credits.” Running those models in an agent, agent flow, app, or flow does consume credits. Microsoft says agents and agent flows use Copilot Credits; app and flow actions first use AI Builder credits and may use Copilot Credits if AI Builder credits are unavailable or exhausted.
Changes for new and existing customers
Microsoft says that, beginning November 1, 2025, new customers must purchase Copilot Credits to run AI Builder features. AI Builder capacity add-ons are restricted to renewal or true-up purchases by existing customers, and Microsoft says AI Builder trials are discontinued. Beginning November 1, 2026, new or renewed Power Platform and Dynamics 365 licenses will no longer receive seeded AI Builder credits. Eligible existing licenses retain seeded credits through their applicable contract term. These dates and eligibility rules come from Microsoft’s licensing notice and may not describe every customer contract.
Power Automate Premium is a separate requirement
Microsoft classifies AI Builder actions as premium connectors. A Power Automate flow that uses an AI Builder action is therefore a premium flow requiring Power Automate Premium licensing. This licensing requirement is separate from the credits consumed when the AI feature runs. Microsoft also says that, under pay-as-you-go, the cloud-flow run meter is separate from AI Builder credit consumption.
Environment prerequisites and help with a scenario
Microsoft lists a Power Platform environment with Dataverse among the prerequisites for AI Builder. Because capacity, licensing, and prices can vary by customer and change over time, consult the current Power Platform licensing guide and ask Microsoft Sales or a Microsoft Certified Partner to confirm the requirements for a specific app or workflow.
