Definition of Neural Processing Unit (NPU): What It Is and What It Does

A neural processing unit (NPU) is specialized hardware that speeds up supported neural-network workloads alongside the CPU and GPU. Here is what it does and how to judge one.

A neural processing unit (NPU) is specialized hardware that accelerates supported neural-network and machine-learning computations. It usually sits inside a processor or device, next to the CPU and GPU, and takes on selected AI workloads, including some that run locally on the device instead of in the cloud. What a given NPU can actually do depends on the chip, the software stack, the model and the application.

What an NPU is, in plain terms

An NPU is an AI accelerator. It is not a replacement for the CPU. Intel describes it as specialized for neural-network and machine-learning operations such as matrix multiplication, convolutions and activation functions. These are the repeated mathematical steps a trained model performs when it makes a prediction, which is called inference.

NPUs are found in laptops, tablets, PCs, mobile devices and processor platforms. Intel’s Core Processor Series 3 datasheet, for example, names tablets, laptops and PCs as target platforms for its NPU technology.

How an NPU works

Running a neural network means applying the same kinds of math to large blocks of model data, again and again. An NPU is built to speed up those selected operations. That is why it is described as efficient for suitable AI tasks.

Radxa Cubie A7S Single Board Computer, Allwinner A733 Octa-Core CPU, 3 Tops NPU, Pocket-Sized (Radxa Cubie A7S 4GB)
  • POWERFUL PROCESSOR: Equipped with the Allwinner A733 octa-core CPU, delivering fast and efficient performance for a wide range of computing tasks.
  • AI CAPABILITY: Features a built-in 3 TOPS NPU, enabling on-device artificial intelligence and machine learning applications with impressive processing power.
  • COMPACT DESIGN: Pocket-sized single-board computer form factor makes it ideal for embedded projects, prototyping, and space-constrained deployments.
  • VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY: Onboard interfaces include GPIO headers, USB ports, and networking options to support a broad variety of peripherals and project needs.
  • ONBOARD STORAGE: Includes eMMC flash storage for fast, reliable read and write speeds, providing a stable foundation for your operating system and applications.

Having the hardware is not enough, though. The operating system, drivers, runtime and application decide whether a particular model can be sent to the NPU. If the software does not target it, the work runs on the CPU or GPU instead. This explanation combines Intel’s workload examples and its descriptions of processor roles. It does not claim that every NPU uses the same internal design.

NPU vs CPU vs GPU

Processor Typical role in an AI-capable device Key distinction
CPU General-purpose control, application logic and other computing Flexible, and not limited to neural-network tasks
GPU Graphics and highly parallel computation, including some AI workloads Can accelerate parallel AI work, but its design also serves graphics
NPU Specialized acceleration of supported neural-network and machine-learning workloads Meant to handle selected AI operations efficiently alongside the CPU and GPU

These are descriptions of roles from vendor material, not the result of a controlled cross-vendor comparison. A system may divide work among all three depending on the application.

What NPUs are used for

Vendors point to local AI features such as voice-related and image-related tasks. Microsoft Support’s NPU explainer describes NPUs as handling “trillions of operations per second.” That phrase is qualitative. It does not identify a model, a measurement method or a comparable device result, so it should not be used to rank products.

An NPU in a device does not tell you which features that device supports. A feature appears only when the software and model are written to use the NPU.

Why “NPU” does not mean one standard

The term covers different vendor implementations. Intel’s hardware overview (Processor Guidebook: The Basics from CPUs to ASICs, dated March 9, 2026) says that “common descriptors and standardized language have not yet emerged for many of these technologies.” So an NPU label alone guarantees neither a particular architecture nor software compatibility.

How to compare devices with NPUs

No independently comparable benchmark with a named publisher, year and methodology was established for NPUs in general. A single peak figure therefore says little. Check these points for the specific device instead:

  • Whether the applications you use support that NPU and your model formats.
  • Measured performance on the same workload, including the model and numeric precision used.
  • Power and battery behavior while the workload runs.
  • Runtime and driver support.
  • Memory constraints.
  • Whether the task runs locally or through a cloud service.

Do you need an NPU?

Not for all AI software. An NPU matters when the applications you use run supported AI features locally and are written to use it. Many AI tools run in the cloud or on the CPU or GPU. Product details and support claims change, so confirm the NPU capability and feature support in the documentation for the exact system before buying.
