“Mobile communications modes” is not a single standardized list. It is a broad phrase for the different wireless technologies and network arrangements a mobile device can use. The phrase mixes three separate ideas, and keeping them apart removes most of the confusion: the link technology (cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth), the service or traffic carried (voice, messaging, internet data), and the generation of a cellular system (2G through 5G).
The three layers behind the phrase

“Mobile” describes the device or the way it is used. It does not mean every connection is cellular. The ITU-T’s 2024 telecommunications security handbook says: “Mobile terminals with data communications capability (e.g., Wi-Fi and GSM-enabled mobile phones, notebooks, tablets and e-readers and PDAs) are widely available and are used for an increasing number of applications.” One device can therefore support several modes at once.

Cellular: the operator network mode
A cellular network is organized into cells, each served by a radio base station. The ITU glossary defines a base station as the radio transmitter/receiver and antenna that serve phones in a cell and pass traffic onward. Two related terms are worth knowing:

This is what lets a call or session continue while you travel.
- Roaming: allowing a subscriber to use another operator’s network.
Both are network functions. They are not modes you switch on and off the way you do with Bluetooth. Cellular is the wide-area mobility mode and depends on an operator.

Wi-Fi: wireless local network access
Wi-Fi is a wireless local network technology that mobile terminals can use for data communication. It is separate from the cellular radio access network, even though both can end up providing internet access. In practice you connect to a nearby access point rather than to an operator’s cell tower.
Bluetooth: short-distance device links
Bluetooth is a short-distance radio technology for linking nearby devices such as phones, computers and accessories. It connects devices to each other rather than serving as a route to a wide-area network.

Voice calls, text messages and mobile data describe what is carried, not necessarily a different radio mode. A cellular system can carry more than one kind of service. When someone asks whether voice, text and data are different “modes”, the accurate answer is that they are different services, and what a given network supports depends on its generation and the operator.

What 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G mean
These are generations of mobile systems. An ITU technical paper from 2012 gives this broad, historical summary: “2G networks provide voice capabilities and some limited data capabilities. 3G networks provide voice and data capabilities. 4G (LTE or IMT-Advanced) are data networks with voice capabilities.”
ITU describes 5G as the fifth generation of mobile technologies, placed within the IMT-2020 framework. Among the ITU-recognized technologies are 3GPP’s standalone and non-standalone deployment models.

Treat these as general distinctions, not guarantees. They say nothing certain about the speed, coverage or service support of a particular carrier or handset today, and the 2012 summary reflects its era.

The phrase has no single official taxonomy, and this article takes no position on any country, carrier or device. It does not address carrier plans, local coverage, handset compatibility, emergency calling or network shutdown schedules.
