The two of them collaborate through communication and digital tools instead of sharing an office. The word “human” matters because “virtual assistant” also names software that answers spoken or written commands.
Why the qualifier “human” is needed
“Virtual assistant” has two common meanings. One is a person doing remote work. The other is a program. The Virtual Assistant Networking Association records a typical reaction when someone mentions the job: “Oh, like Siri?” That is an anecdote, not a measured statistic. It still shows why writers, job boards and clients often say “human VA” to avoid confusion.

Searchers phrase the question in several ways, such as “What does a human virtual assistant do?” or “Is a virtual assistant a person or AI?” The answer to the second is that it can be either, and the context tells you which.

An example from healthcare
The American Medical Association (AMA) lists these tasks for medical practices: appointment scheduling and reminders, transmitting patient records, dictating visit notes, prior authorization requests, charge entry, claim submission and follow-up. These are examples, not a universal scope. A given VA’s duties depend on their skills, the client’s needs and the rules that apply to the work.
Is a virtual assistant a contractor or an employee?
In a report by its Board of Trustees on the proper use of overseas virtual assistants in medical practice (2024 Annual Meeting proceedings), the AMA states: “a virtual assistant is an independent contractor who provides administrative services to clients while operating outside of the client’s office.” The report contrasts this with a remote employee hired directly by a practice.

Treat that as a description of the medical-practice context, not a legal rule. Whether someone is a contractor or an employee depends on the facts of the arrangement and the jurisdiction. Calling someone a “virtual assistant” does not settle it.

A human VA is a person doing work. An AI or software assistant is a program. The European Commission’s Eurostat ICT manual (2025) defines the software meaning: “A virtual assistant (or an intelligent personal assistant) is a software that can perform tasks or services for an individual based on verbal commands.” Its examples include smart speakers and apps.

| Question to ask | Why it matters when choosing |
|---|---|
| How variable are the tasks? | Routine, repeatable requests and open-ended ones may call for different kinds of help. |
| Does the work need personal communication or judgment? | Client-facing or sensitive work involves people interacting with people. |
| Who is accountable for follow-through? | A person can be held to a result. Software output usually needs someone to check it. |
| What is the budget? | Neither type is shown to be cheaper in every case. |
| How much human review is needed? | Even good output may need checking, especially in regulated work. |
Jeffrey M. Allen’s article in the American Bar Association’s GPSolo (May–June 2024) frames the choice this way: “Whether a human or an AI virtual assistant will work best for you depends on your specific needs, preferences, budget, and the nature of your practice.” It was written for lawyers. It supports weighing the task and the user’s needs, but it does not rank either option as better overall on cost or capability.
Compliance when work is delegated
Where the work touches regulated information, as in medical administration, the AMA report says practices need to address privacy, training, oversight and applicable compliance obligations before giving a VA access or tasks. The same thinking applies to any role that handles confidential client or customer data.

A note on market-size claims
No reliable figure for the size or growth of the human virtual-assistant profession turned up in the sources reviewed. The AMA report does say that “In 2017 alone, health care industry outsourcing grew by 36%,” citing a 2021 medical journal article. That figure covers healthcare outsourcing in general, not virtual assistants, so it should not be quoted as a VA market statistic.
