Definition of External Hard Disk: What It Is and How It Works

An external hard disk is a mechanical hard disk drive in a separate enclosure, usually connected by USB. Here is how it works and how it differs from an external SSD.

An external hard disk is a hard disk drive (HDD) housed outside your computer and connected to it through an interface such as USB. It stores data magnetically on spinning platters, read and written by a moving head. Because “external hard drive” is also used loosely for flash-based external SSDs, the mechanical HDD is the precise meaning of the term.

What “external” and “hard disk” each mean

The two words describe different things, and it helps to separate them.

  • “External” describes the location and connection. The drive sits in its own enclosure, apart from the computer’s internal components. It usually connects by USB, though other external interfaces exist. Dell Support describes external drives as separate from the computer and commonly connected over USB.
  • “Hard disk” describes the storage mechanism. A mechanical HDD keeps data as magnetic patterns on one or more rotating platters, with a movable read/write head accessing them.

Put together, an external hard disk is a mechanical HDD in a standalone enclosure. An external SSD, by contrast, stores data in flash memory with no moving parts. Both are sold as “external drives,” so check the storage technology in the product specifications before assuming what you are buying.

How an external hard disk works

Inside the drive, the platters spin while the head moves across their surface to locate and change data. The enclosure supplies the housing, power handling, and the connector that links the drive to your computer. Data travels from the drive, through the enclosure, over the cable, and into the host machine.

Power and interface vary by product. Some portable models draw power through the USB connection alone. Others use a separate power adapter. SanDisk states that portable models can be bus-powered over USB, which is why a small portable drive often needs only one cable. Larger desktop-style enclosures frequently need their own power source. Confirm the product’s power requirements and the ports on your computer before you buy.

External HDD versus external SSD

The table below compares the two categories in general terms. Individual models differ, so treat it as a starting point rather than a guarantee for any specific product.

Question External HDD External SSD
Storage method Magnetic platters with a moving read/write head Flash memory with no moving parts
Typical strength Large capacity at a generally lower cost per terabyte Faster transfers, compact size, and a solid-state design
Typical connection Commonly USB; interface and power vary by model Commonly USB or another supported external interface
Speed in practice Depends on the drive, interface, and the speed of the source drive Depends on the drive, interface, and the speed of the source drive

Seagate Support explains that a transfer can be limited by the slower of the drives involved, and that realized speed depends on the storage technology and interface. A fast external SSD copying from a slow internal disk will not run at its full rated speed.

What external hard disks are used for

  • Extra capacity. Holding photos, video, music, or game libraries that would crowd the internal drive.
  • Backup copies. Storing a second copy of important files on a separate physical device.
  • Moving files. Carrying data between computers without relying on a network.

An external hard disk is a useful part of a backup plan, but it is not a complete one. A single drive kept next to the computer can be lost, damaged, or affected by the same event that damages the original files. Pair it with a second location, such as cloud storage or a drive kept elsewhere, if the data matters.

How to choose between the two

  • Choose an external HDD if capacity and price per terabyte matter most, such as for archives or a large media library.
  • Choose an external SSD if faster file transfers, a lighter and smaller device, or a solid-state design matters more.
  • Check the connection on both your computer and the drive, and confirm whether the drive needs external power.
  • Compare the capacity you need now with what you expect to need in a year or two.

There is no single best choice. The right drive depends on the workload, the ports you have, and the budget.

When you search for a product, use the phrase “portable external hard disk drive” if you specifically want a mechanical HDD, so that flash-based listings do not appear by mistake.
