In decentralized variants, independently operated nodes each hold portions of the data and coordinate through network protocols. Spreading data across nodes does not, by itself, guarantee that the data will be kept indefinitely, kept private, or always reachable. Those properties depend on how a specific network is designed and operated.
What the term covers
“Distributed storage network” is the broad term for storage architecture spread across networked machines. “Decentralized storage” is narrower in emphasis: it usually means several independently run peers hold the data and no single party controls the system. Implementations vary in ownership and governance, so the two terms are not interchangeable in every case.

Blockchain-based systems are one design choice within this category, not a requirement. Ethereum.org describes decentralized storage as a peer-to-peer network of user-operators, each holding portions of the overall data. Swarm describes itself as a peer-to-peer storage and communication network.
Do not confuse a storage network with a distributed ledger. A ledger may record commitments, payments, or pointers while the bulk data lives elsewhere. Ethereum.org states that storing large amounts of data directly on Ethereum is not what the chain was designed for. Its contract-based model stores a location hash on-chain while nodes hold the data itself. ITU-T F.751.2, a 2020 reference framework for distributed ledger technologies, is useful context for ledger applications, but it is not a general definition of distributed storage.

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
How data moves through a distributed storage network
A typical design follows the same sequence, though the details differ from system to system:
- Submission. A client sends data to the network through a client application, gateway, or API.
- Identification. The system assigns identifiers and may split the data into pieces.
- Placement. A routing mechanism distributes those pieces among nodes.
- Indexing. An addressing mechanism makes the pieces findable later.
- Redundancy, where used. Some designs add copies or coded fragments so data can be recovered when nodes fail or go offline. The level of protection depends entirely on the design and on how operators behave.
- Retrieval. A client requests the data through the network’s interfaces or APIs.
Worked example: Swarm
Swarm’s documentation describes four layers: a peer-to-peer underlay that handles connections and routing; an overlay network and distributed immutable store; a data-access and API layer; and an application layer. Its overlay uses Kademlia-style distributed hash table routing, and it stores fixed-size 4 KB chunks, each with a unique address, spread across the network. These details belong to Swarm alone. Other networks use different chunk sizes, routing schemes, or no chunking at all.

Persistence: storing is not the same as keeping
A network needs a persistence mechanism if users expect data to remain available over time. Ethereum.org distinguishes several models, summarized below. None of them is a guarantee on its own.
| Model | How data stays available | Who has to act | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blockchain-based persistence | Every node accounts for the chain and the data embedded in it | The protocol and its node operators | Ethereum.org (page updated May 13, 2026) says this approach has scalability and cost constraints for large data |
| Contract-based persistence | Multiple nodes agree to hold data for a set period; the chain may store only a location hash | The party paying for storage must renew or accept refund terms at expiry | Term length, renewal obligations, refund rules, and what happens if a node leaves |
| IPFS with pinning or another arrangement | IPFS stores and serves files, websites, and data, but does not itself include an incentive scheme; content persists when pinned or hosted by a node | The pinning service or the person running the node | Who pins the content, for how long, and whether the pinner has a stated commitment; not stated by the protocol itself |
| Retention challenges | Nodes are asked cryptographically to prove they still hold the data | The protocol, which applies penalties in the example Ethereum.org cites from Arweave | Challenge frequency, penalty size, and remedies are design-specific and not stated in the general description |
The practical distinction is between “the network distributes data” and “a named provider promises to keep it for a stated term.” Before relying on any system, identify who is responsible for renewals, for recovering data after a node failure, and for keeping access working.

What distribution does not settle
- Single points of failure can remain. Spreading data across nodes reduces dependence on one server, but gateways, client software, governance decisions, and access paths can still be centralized.
- Replication and erasure coding are different. Replication stores whole copies; erasure coding stores coded fragments from which the original can be rebuilt. Each network chooses its own method and redundancy level, so there is no universal figure to quote.
- Persistence has to be designed and paid for. Check retention enforcement, duration, renewal obligations, incentives, and the outcome if a node disappears.
- Privacy and security are separate questions. Distribution does not establish encryption, access control, or safe configuration. Check each separately.
- Usability depends on retrieval paths. A network that stores data is not automatically equivalent to consumer cloud sync or a conventional backup service. Check the APIs, gateways, addressing scheme, and recovery behavior before assuming how you will get your data back.
Security and operational risk
NIST Special Publication 800-209, “Security Guidelines for Storage Infrastructure,” was finalized on October 26, 2020. It covers authentication and authorization, configuration control, data protection, restoration assurance, and encryption for storage infrastructure. It is official guidance for storage generally, not a standard written specifically for distributed storage networks.
NIST notes that greater storage-management complexity raises the probability of configuration errors and the security threats that follow from them. That is the main reason not to treat decentralization as a safety feature in itself. A distributed system can diversify infrastructure while still exposing users to misconfiguration, weak access control, compromised endpoints, unreliable retrieval, or governance risk.

How to compare two storage networks
When you are choosing between systems, compare them on the following points:
Recommended Free Tools
- Persistence and incentives: on-chain replication, storage contracts, provider commitments, or user-run pinning.
- Retention enforcement: whether challenges exist, how they work, contract terms, renewal duties, and remedies for failed storage.
- Placement and redundancy: whether data is replicated or chunked, and how retrieval works when a node fails.
- Decentralization and governance: who operates nodes, and who controls gateways and policy. Ethereum.org cautions that measuring decentralization is difficult.
- Access and performance: the APIs and retrieval path are system-specific. The cited documentation does not establish comparative latency or throughput figures, so no network should be declared faster without current measurements.
- Security and operations: access control, encryption, configuration practice, incident response, and restoration assurance, as NIST describes them.
- Cost and term: separate the initial upload cost, ongoing storage, retrieval charges, and renewal. Ethereum.org notes that mainnet storage costs can make large data impractical, and that contract-based storage requires ongoing upkeep.
Ethereum.org names Filecoin, Storj, Swarm, and several pinning services as examples of providers. That list is a snapshot from the page’s May 2026 update, so confirm current availability and terms directly with each provider before choosing one.

Figures to handle carefully
The cited material does not establish independent market-size, adoption, durability, or comparative-cost figures for distributed storage networks, so none are given here. Ethereum.org also mentions chain-size estimates “at the time of writing” that depend on the client software, and an Internet storage-capacity estimate without an original publisher named on the page. Neither should be repeated as a current or attributable statistic.
The only exact figure in this article is Swarm’s 4 KB chunk size, which applies to Swarm’s documented design only.
