Deferred Execution: Why Avoiding “No” Can Create Worse Outcomes

“Deferred execution” is Khali Sollis’s metaphor for putting off a response to avoid saying no. Here’s what the essay argues, when a pause is useful, and what its evidence does not establish.

In Khali Sollis’s DEV Community essay, “deferred execution” is a software metaphor for putting off a response because saying no feels uncomfortable. The essay argues that a vague “Maybe later,” “I’ll think about it,” or silence can leave expectations unresolved rather than settle a request. That is the author’s personal argument, not a clinical diagnosis or a proven rule about every relationship.

What “deferred execution” means in the essay

In software, deferred execution means postponing work until later. Sollis applies that idea to a familiar social moment: someone asks for help, time, or a commitment, and the answer is already no—or likely to be no—but the response gets delayed to avoid the discomfort of refusing.

The phrase is a metaphor, not an established psychological term. The essay is a first-person commentary by Khali Sollis, not a study or a formal account of a recognized condition. Read the essay on DEV Community.

Why postponing a refusal may make things harder

Sollis’s concern is that a non-answer does not necessarily release either person from the request. “Maybe later” can leave the asker unsure whether to keep a slot open, follow up, or make another plan. “I’ll think about it” may sound like a real possibility even when the decision is settled. Silence can leave the same uncertainty without any explanation.

  • ✔This daily plan pad features detailed hourly schedule timelines from 12 AM to 11 PM, perfectly segment your morning, afternoon and evening hours. Track meetings, appointments and fixed tasks hour by hour to eliminate procrastination and boost your daily time management efficiency.
  • ✔ 1.Put an end to the time black hole: Every hour of activity is recorded, so you always know where your time goes and bid farewell to "being busy yet achieving nothing". 2.Cure procrastination: Visual time grids have an inherent sense of supervision; blank time slots serve as a direct reminder, with more binding power than phone alerts. 3.Gain instant a sense of accomplishment: Check off completed tasks with a simple tick. A filled time axis page by page delivers physical feedback that digital tools cannot match, making it easier to keep going the more you use it.
  • ✔ 1.Students & Exam Takers: Plan class, review and practice time; allocate study hours for each subject precisely for targeted exam preparation. 2.Professionals: Schedule meetings, work projects and commute time; prioritize tasks clearly and bid farewell to chaotic overtime. 3.Freelancers & Stay-at-Home Parents: Clearly divide work/childcare/personal time to avoid blurring the boundaries between life and work. 4.Self-Discipline Enthusiasts: Check in on fitness, reading and learning; develop regular routines with hourly scales to build good habits effortlessly.

In the author’s account, that ambiguity can preserve expectations and tension, and make a commitment feel harder to exit as time passes. These are plausible interpersonal costs the essay highlights, not effects shown to happen in every case. The essay supplies no sample, quantified outcome, or experiment establishing that delay damages trust or relationships.

When a clear no is the useful answer

If the decision is already clear, Sollis recommends checking whether the request fits your availability and priorities, then stating the answer plainly. The essay’s example is: “No, I’m not available for that.” A direct refusal gives the other person a definite answer to plan around; it need not become a long defense of your reasons.

That wording is a sample, not a script everyone must use. A brief explanation or a different boundary may suit the context, but implying future agreement when you do not intend it can keep the request open unnecessarily.

When taking time is different from avoiding the answer

Not every pause is avoidance. You may genuinely need to check a calendar, understand the request, consider the consequences, or decide what you can offer. A useful distinction is whether the decision remains open for a concrete reason, rather than whether answering no feels unpleasant.

A 2016 review, “Situational Strategies for Self-Control,” discusses avoidance as one way of coping with stress, while noting that directly addressing a problem may be more effective over the long term. This is broad context about self-control strategies, not direct evidence about refusing requests or validating Sollis’s specific claims.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

The DEV essay makes an argument from personal perspective; it does not report research testing deferred refusals. A 2022 Frontiers in Psychology study included 106 undergraduate students and examined executive functions and academic procrastination. Its subject is academic procrastination, not saying no, workplace requests, or interpersonal trust, so it cannot establish the essay’s claims. See the study in Frontiers in Psychology.
