There is no single universal default IP address. If you want to open your router’s settings, find the router address shown for your active network connection—often labeled Default Gateway, Router, or Gateway. A factory-set address is specific to a router model or product family and may have been changed.
What “default IP address” means
An IP address identifies a network interface in a particular networking context. The phrase “default IP address” can refer to a value configured by a device manufacturer, such as a router’s local management address. It is not a number shared by all routers.

A default gateway has a different role: it is the router address a device uses to send traffic beyond its local network. On a simple home network, the router’s management address and the client’s default gateway may be the same address, but the terms describe different functions. Cisco’s networking glossary explains both roles; its IOS command reference uses “default gateway” for a router address specified in a particular configuration.

Examples of manufacturer default addresses
These are model-family examples, not universal router addresses. A network administrator or setup process may also change the address.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Manufacturer or product family | Address stated by the manufacturer | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| TP-Link standard routers | 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 | TP-Link says most of its standard routers use one of these addresses; this does not apply to all router brands. TP-Link support |
| TP-Link Deco mesh systems | 192.168.68.1 | Example for the Deco product family. TP-Link support |
| D-Link ADSL router/modem products covered by its FAQ | 192.168.1.1, with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 | Specific to the products covered by the D-Link FAQ. |
For example, “Some routers use 192.168.1.1 by default” is more accurate than saying that this is the default IP address for every router.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Windows: Look for Default Gateway in the active network connection details. TP-Link’s guide also describes an IPv4 DNS server field in the settings it covers.
- macOS and iOS: Look for Router in the active network’s details.
- Android and ChromeOS: Look for Gateway in the active network’s details.
TP-Link’s cross-platform instructions describe these labels. Nintendo’s router settings guide also directs users to find the address, often labeled “Default Gateway,” and enter it in a browser.

Open the router settings page
- Join the network managed by the router you want to configure.
- Find the active connection’s Default Gateway, Router, or Gateway value.
- Enter that address in your browser’s address bar. If the router’s local management page is available, it should open; sign-in requirements depend on the router and its configuration.
If the address does not work
- Confirm that your device is connected to the intended router’s network, not another Wi-Fi network or a mobile connection.
- Check the current gateway or router field again instead of relying on a remembered factory address; the address may have been changed.
- Consult instructions for the exact router model. ASUS says its default address can be found on the device label and describes using ASUS Device Discovery to locate ASUS network devices in its support guide.
Do not start with a factory reset just because a familiar address fails: resetting can discard customized settings. Check the current connection details and model-specific guidance first.
