DeepSeek-V3’s Multi-Token Prediction (MTP) extends next-token prediction so the model also predicts later tokens in sequence. DeepSeek-AI describes it as an auxiliary training objective and reports using those extra predictions with speculative decoding to accelerate inference. The training rationale and the reported inference speedup are separate claims, and the speed figures apply to the authors’ evaluated system—not every model or deployment.
What is Multi-Token Prediction (MTP)?
In ordinary autoregressive prediction, a model predicts the next token from the tokens that came before it. DeepSeek-V3 extends that prediction scope: at each position, its MTP modules predict additional future tokens sequentially. Each prediction depth preserves a causal chain, so later predictions are conditioned on the preceding context and predictions rather than produced as independent guesses.

That sequential design differs from an earlier MTP approach cited in DeepSeek-AI’s DeepSeek-V3 Technical Report, which used independent output heads to predict additional tokens in parallel. The distinction is about information flow and architecture; it does not establish that either approach is universally better.
Why does DeepSeek-V3 use MTP during training?
DeepSeek-AI presents two motivations. Predicting more than one future token can make the training signal denser, potentially improving data efficiency. It may also encourage the model to form representations that account for what comes later in a sequence. The report says the authors observed improved evaluation performance, but that is their reported finding, not independent confirmation that MTP improves every benchmark or model.

The authors summarize the rationale this way: “On the one hand, an MTP objective densifies the training signals and may improve data efficiency. On the other hand, MTP may enable the model to pre-plan its representations for better prediction of future tokens.” — DeepSeek-AI, DeepSeek-V3 Technical Report (2024).
How does DeepSeek-V3 use MTP for speculative decoding?
At inference, speculative decoding uses proposed future tokens to help generate output more quickly. DeepSeek-V3 can use its extra-token predictions as proposals: a proposed token that is accepted can advance generation without requiring the usual separate prediction step for that token. This inference use is distinct from MTP’s role as a training objective; training-signal arguments do not by themselves establish an inference speedup.

For its evaluated generation topics, DeepSeek-AI reports that the second predicted token was accepted 85%–90% of the time and that the method delivered 1.8× tokens per second. These figures describe the report’s system and evaluation. They are not a universal acceptance rate or speed guarantee for other workloads, models, inference engines, or hardware.

DeepSeek-V3’s reported scale helps put MTP in context, but parameter and training figures describe different things. The technical report and the official DeepSeek-V3 repository list 671 billion total model parameters and 37 billion activated per token. The repository says the Hugging Face model files total 685 billion parameters because they include 14 billion MTP module weights in addition to the 671 billion main-model weights. These are not contradictory totals: one describes the main model, the other the weight files including MTP modules.

DeepSeek-AI reports pretraining on 14.8 trillion tokens and 2.788 million H800 GPU hours for full training. Its $5.576 million training-cost estimate assumes a rate of $2 per H800 GPU hour; it excludes prior research and ablation costs. The company’s DeepSeek-V3 release announcement also reports the 14.8 trillion-token training figure.

The official repository lists 128K context length for the DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-V3-Base checkpoints. It also says community support for MTP is under active development. A checkpoint’s inclusion of MTP weights therefore does not, by itself, mean that a particular inference engine can use them. Check the current documentation for the specific engine and deployment you plan to use.
