With @zoytown/dsh-rewind, you can restore a workspace to a saved point before a file was deleted, then reverse that restore using the safety snapshot ID it prints. The plugin restores files, not the conversation, and the restore can remove newer workspace files absent from the selected snapshot.
Find the saved point before the file was deleted
The rewind plugin saves workspace snapshots at the end of turns in a separate shadow Git repository. It can work even if the workspace itself is not a Git repository. To locate a recovery point, either open Settings → Rewind and review the saved points and change descriptions, or run /rewind list.

Choose the snapshot immediately before the file disappeared. The command /rewind selects the previous turn; /rewind 3 selects the end of turn 3. You can also select a snapshot by ID prefix with /rewind <id>; the prefix must be at least four characters and identify a unique snapshot. In Settings, the plugin asks for confirmation and warns that files newer than the chosen state may be deleted. See the plugin README for the documented commands and interface.
Restore the workspace, then check the file
A restore makes the workspace match the selected snapshot: a file changed since then returns to its earlier contents, while files added later that are absent from that snapshot are deleted. After the restore, verify that the missing file is present and has the expected contents.

The operation does not rewind the conversation transcript. Your messages and the agent’s prior exchanges remain as they were, even though the workspace files change. The plugin stores its snapshots under $DSH_HOME/rewind/, outside the workspace’s own .git; its README says its save sequence does not move the workspace’s Git HEAD.
Undo an unwanted rewind
Before replacing the current workspace with an older snapshot, the plugin saves the state it is about to overwrite. The restore prints the ID of that safety snapshot. If the rewind removed wanted later work, restore that ID with /rewind <id> to return the workspace to its pre-restore state. The ID prefix must be at least four characters and unique. This is a file-state recovery step; it does not alter the conversation.

Know which files the plugin cannot recover
Snapshots follow the plugin’s capture rules, so a saved point is not necessarily a copy of every file in the workspace. The README documents these exclusions:
- Files ignored by a
.gitignorefile are neither captured nor restored. Examples include.envandnode_modules. .gitis always excluded.- Additional configured excludes apply even to files tracked by the workspace repository. The README warns that intentionally tracked
dist/orbuild/files can be omitted unless the excludes are configured as[]. - Files inside nested Git repositories are not captured internally; the plugin records them like Git sub-repository pointers.
If the missing file falls into one of these categories, it may not exist in the rewind snapshots. The exclusion and configuration details are documented in the plugin README.

Install and compatibility requirements
The plugin documentation lists Git wherever DeepSeek Harness runs its tools and Node.js ^22.19 || >=24 as requirements. For a web-profile installation, it documents this command:

If the Rewind page is missing, the README says plugins mount at boot: restart DSH, then inspect the profile dump to check whether the plugin bundle is mounted. The plugin README reports that its save, restore and undo flow was exercised on 2026-08-19 with Harness 0.1.0-rc.6 and 0.1.0-rc.7 and Git 2.50.1. That is the project’s reported verification, not a guarantee for every installation.

- Restore controls wait for the agent: Panel and
/rewindrestores wait until the agent is idle. If a restore is interrupted partway, the workspace may be between states. The README says the plugin creates a safety snapshot first, which can be used in a later restore to settle the workspace. - Rewind page missing: Restart DSH, then inspect the profile dump to confirm that the plugin bundle mounted.
- Expected file absent after restore: Check whether
.gitignore, a configured exclusion,.git, or a nested repository kept it out of the snapshot.
The README also says the plugin makes no outbound network requests and has no telemetry; that is the project’s documentation claim, not an independent security audit. Its documented defaults include a 60,000 ms Git timeout, 30-day retention, a maximum of 50 sessions, a list limit of 200, and exposeTool: 'off'. Retention is session-level: older or numerous sessions may be dropped as whole sessions, while a long session can retain its snapshots. These defaults and limits are described in the plugin README.
