There are two ways to get started with DeepSeek Harness on Windows: download the official desktop app, or use Node.js to launch its Web UI from PowerShell. For the terminal route, the official quick start is npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web; the local interface uses http://127.0.0.1:3080 by default. If it fails, first check which executables and versions PowerShell is actually using before reinstalling anything.
Choose a setup path
DeepSeek describes Harness as an open-source agent harness in public preview. The desktop app and the Node.js Web UI are separate ways to use it; launching the Web UI does not require building the source repository.

| Option | What you do | What is documented |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop app | Download Harness Desktop for Windows from DeepSeek’s official download page. | The page lists the Windows download, but its retrieved text does not specify system requirements or detailed installation and recovery steps. Confirm the current artifact and requirements there: DeepSeek downloads. |
| CLI and Web UI | Install Node.js, then run npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web in a terminal. |
The official quick start documents the command; the repository documents the default local address and --no-open: DeepSeek Harness and DeepSeek Harness repository. |
Use the desktop download if you want the application rather than a terminal-launched local server. Use the CLI route if you are comfortable working in PowerShell and want the documented Web UI command.

Launch the Web UI from PowerShell
- Install Node.js. The official quick-start pages referenced here do not state a Windows-specific minimum Node.js version.
- Open PowerShell and run:
npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web - Open http://127.0.0.1:3080 if the browser does not open automatically. The repository gives this as the default local address.
To start the server without automatically opening a browser, add --no-open:
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web --no-open
A third-party Windows compatibility handbook verified on 2026-08-27 reports the package’s Node engine range as ^22.19.0 || >=24.0.0. The official quick start does not publish that Windows-specific requirement, so check the installed package metadata rather than treating the handbook’s range as a permanent official minimum. See the handbook: Windows compatibility guide.
Build from source instead
Building is a separate developer workflow for working from a repository checkout. If you only want to launch the published Web UI, use the npx command above.
- Clone the official repository:
git clone https://github.com/deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness.git - Change into the checkout:
cd deepseek-harness - Install dependencies, build, and launch the Web UI:
pnpm install pnpm run build pnpm dsh web
These are the repository’s documented commands. See the official repository for current project instructions.

Check Windows command and runtime resolution first
If a launch fails, capture the exact error and inspect what the current PowerShell session resolves before changing installations. The following checks come from the third-party Windows compatibility handbook, not an official DeepSeek support guarantee:
Get-Command dsh,node,npm,pnpm,pwsh -All |
Select-Object Name,CommandType,Source,Version
node --version
npm --version
pnpm --version
dsh --version
$PSVersionTable | Format-List
To check which Node, npm, and dsh executables are found, and the global npm prefix, run:
where.exe node
where.exe npm
where.exe dsh
npm prefix --global
The handbook warns that stale PATH entries or multiple Node installations can leave PowerShell using an older executable even after a new runtime is installed. After changing PATH, close and reopen the terminal, then rerun the version and resolution checks.

Diagnose PowerShell and profile-related failures
If a shell tool will not start, check whether PowerShell is discoverable and whether a minimal noninteractive version query works:
Get-Command pwsh -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Get-Command powershell.exe -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
pwsh -NoLogo -NoProfile -NonInteractive -Command '$PSVersionTable.PSVersion'
Then inspect the effective Web profile configuration with:
dsh --profile web --dump-config
The handbook describes its tested native Windows composition as using PowerShell rows and disabling POSIX Bash rows. A model mentioning Bash does not, by itself, show which executor the active configuration mounted; use the configuration output for the installed release to check.

Preserve useful crash details and avoid destructive first steps
For a crash or an opaque nonzero exit, record the exact command, stdout and stderr, exit code, runtime versions, and the Windows application event identifying the faulting process or module. A package-manager ELIFECYCLE line alone does not establish that Harness itself crashed; a child process may have failed. Before sharing logs, redact tokens, credential arguments, private prompts, and sensitive paths.
The handbook recommends preserving the Harness home while changing Node installations. Its data behavior is version-sensitive, so do not delete user data or repeatedly reinstall components as an initial repair step; confirm current upstream guidance before attempting a destructive fix.

The official repository warns: “DeepSeek Harness is in developer preview and iterating rapidly. THERE WILL BE COMPATIBILITY-BREAKING CHANGES.” Commands and behavior may therefore change between releases; consult the official repository for current instructions.
The third-party Windows handbook describes a native CLI/Web route using PowerShell and a Windows sandbox built around a restricted token and NTFS ACLs. It characterizes enforcement as partial, not complete read, network, or process isolation. Do not treat that sandbox as a complete Windows security boundary. The handbook also reports that the Python runtime wheel and persistent PTY paths it reviewed targeted Linux and macOS rather than Windows; that is release-sensitive and should not be generalized beyond the reviewed configuration.
