Dedicated GPU vs. Integrated Graphics: Which Is Better for Gaming?

Dedicated GPUs generally suit demanding games and higher settings; integrated graphics can handle some games with better power efficiency. Compare the exact hardware with your games and target resolution.

A dedicated GPU is generally better for demanding games, higher resolutions, and higher graphics settings. Integrated graphics can still run some games and are often the better fit for thin, power-efficient laptops or lighter gaming. Choose by comparing the specific GPU and CPU in a computer with the games you play—not by relying on the GPU category alone.

What changes when graphics are integrated or dedicated?

An integrated GPU is built into the processor or platform and shares system memory. A dedicated, or discrete, GPU is a separate graphics processor with its own video memory. The distinction affects gaming capability, power use, price, and upgrade options; it does not by itself tell you how fast a particular computer will run a particular game.

What matters Integrated graphics Dedicated graphics
Gaming workload Can handle some games; check the exact GPU against each game’s requirements. Generally better suited to graphics-heavy games and other demanding graphics work. Microsoft Support
Memory Shares system memory; allocation and reporting vary by system. Intel Support Typically uses dedicated video memory on the graphics card. AMD Support
Power and portability Usually more power-efficient, which can suit compact laptops. Uses more power; some laptops switch between integrated and discrete graphics according to the workload. Microsoft Support
Cost Normally the less expensive graphics option. Normally costs more; compare the price and capability of the complete computer, not just the GPU label. Microsoft Support
Upgradeability Part of the system; its performance depends on the processor and platform. A desktop may accept an add-in card if the system is compatible; a laptop GPU generally cannot be upgraded this way. Intel Support

Microsoft summarizes the broad trade-off this way: “Integrated GPUs are normally less powerful than discrete GPUs but are more power-efficient.” That is a category-level comparison, not a promise about every model.

Can integrated graphics run games?

Yes. Integrated graphics can play some games, but results depend on the specific graphics hardware and the game’s demands. A system that suits lighter or less demanding titles may not meet the requirements for a newer graphics-intensive game, especially at high resolution or quality settings.

Before buying, check the developer’s requirements for the games you actually play. If the computer meets only minimum requirements, do not assume that means high settings or smooth performance at your preferred resolution; consult credible benchmarks for the exact GPU and comparable system configuration.

How resolution, settings, and memory affect the choice

Resolution and graphics settings change the workload. Intel notes that 4K renders four times as many pixels as 1080p, and that higher resolutions and settings increase the need for sufficient video memory. Its guidance is to consider the games, resolution, and settings together when evaluating VRAM. Intel’s gaming-laptop guide

Shared system memory is not the same as a graphics card’s VRAM

Integrated graphics use system memory rather than having dedicated memory on a separate graphics card. AMD describes this arrangement as Unified Memory Architecture: graphics share a portion of system RAM. Intel likewise says its integrated graphics allocate shared memory automatically according to several factors, and that BIOS controls are not available on every system. A system’s reported “dedicated video memory” figure does not, by itself, prove that an integrated GPU has physical VRAM on a separate card. Memory reporting and allocation are system-specific, so compare the actual architecture and GPU rather than treating that number as equivalent to a discrete card’s VRAM.

  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

AMD recommends leaving the UMA frame buffer at Auto for most workloads on the desktop systems covered by its guidance. Manually increasing the allocation may help in some cases, but can affect system performance when RAM is limited. This is not a universal BIOS instruction: available settings and their effects depend on the system.

What to choose for your setup

Choose integrated graphics when efficiency and lighter gaming matter most

  • You play titles whose requirements your specific integrated GPU meets.
  • You value battery efficiency, portability, or a compact design more than high graphics settings.
  • You are comparing complete computers and the integrated-graphics option offers the better fit for your budget and workload.

Choose a dedicated GPU for demanding games and higher settings

  • You want to play graphics-intensive games or target higher resolutions and settings.
  • The exact GPU meets the games’ requirements and has suitable memory for your chosen settings.
  • You can accommodate the system’s higher power demand and, for a desktop upgrade, verify compatibility before buying a card.

For either option, compare the exact processor and GPU configuration with the games’ published requirements, then look for credible benchmarks at your intended resolution and settings. GPU names alone are not enough to establish comparable performance, particularly across different laptops.

Why laptops may have both types of GPU

Many Windows laptops combine integrated and discrete graphics. The integrated GPU can handle lighter tasks, while the discrete GPU takes on heavier work; the system may switch between them to balance performance and power efficiency. This can provide more graphics capability than integrated graphics alone, but the discrete GPU’s greater power use remains relevant if battery life and portability are priorities. Microsoft Support

Can you add a dedicated GPU later?

Desktop PCs

A desktop with integrated graphics can often accept a dedicated graphics card, subject to compatibility. Check that the card fits the case and works with the motherboard and power supply. On Intel systems, adding a card normally turns off the processor’s onboard graphics, replacing rather than adding to the CPU GPU; Intel says both may be enabled in BIOS on some systems.
