Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Before maintainers inspect a bugfix diff, tell them what users see now, what should happen instead, and why the change is justified. That behavior delta gives reviewers a concrete claim to verify against the reproduction, implementation, and tests. It is a practical convention, not a guarantee of acceptance: follow the repository’s own contribution guide and templates first.
How do I describe expected versus actual behavior in a bug report?
Describe the observable gap without assuming you already know its cause. “The parser is broken” names a suspected cause; “parsing this input returns an empty list, but the documented result is two entries” states behavior a maintainer can investigate.

A useful report separates what happened from what you expected and why that expectation matters. The Typelevel contribution guide asks bug reporters to include expected and actual behavior and recommends a runnable minimal reproducer; when that is not possible, steps, stack traces, or error messages can help. Typelevel’s contribution guide
- Problem: A concise description of the symptom.
- Observed behavior: The actual result, tied to an input or sequence of steps.
- Expected behavior: The result that should occur, expressed so it can be checked.
- Reason: The user need, documented contract, or project decision that makes the expected result appropriate.
Keep the expectation grounded. If behavior is undocumented or there are plausible alternatives, say what is uncertain and ask maintainers to confirm the intended contract instead of presenting a preference as an established bug.

How do I make a bug easy for maintainers to reproduce?
Reduce the report to the smallest case that still shows the mismatch. Include exact steps or a runnable example, then give enough environment context to help someone reproduce it: project and dependency versions, operating system or platform where relevant, and installation method when it could affect the result. Guidance from contribution-guide.org also recommends checking current and older versions and existing reports before filing. Contribution Guide
- State the version where the behavior occurs; mention whether you checked another relevant version.
- Show the input and the observed output, error, or failure point.
- Include logs, stack traces, or error messages when they add diagnostic value and are safe to share.
- Remove secrets, credentials, personal data, and unrelated output before posting.
- Note frequency or severity if it changes how maintainers should assess the issue.
Modular’s issue template, for example, asks for expected and observed behavior, environment details, and severity or frequency. Templates vary by project, so use the target repository’s fields rather than forcing this list into a mismatched format. Modular repository

What should I include in a bugfix pull request?
A pull request should connect the reported behavior to the proposed correction. A reviewer should be able to understand the change’s purpose without reverse-engineering it from the diff. Apache Hop’s code review guide specifically asks behavior-changing pull requests to describe the big picture so reviewers know what to look for. Apache Hop code review guide
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Problem and observed behavior: Summarize the symptom and the case that triggers it.
- Expected behavior: State the result the fix is meant to produce.
- Behavior delta in this patch: Explain what changes for users and why. Flag compatibility implications or edge cases reviewers should consider; say they were checked only if you actually checked them.
- Reproduction and environment: Link or restate the smallest useful case, with relevant versions and platform details.
- Validation: List the tests and checks you ran, with their actual results. Distinguish automated tests from manual checks, and do not imply broader coverage than you performed.
- Context: Link the related issue, design discussion, or maintainer approval when one exists.
For example, use a structure like this, replacing each bracketed phrase with the facts for your change:
Before this change, calling
[operation]with[input]produces[observed result]. It should produce[expected result]because[user-visible reason]. This patch changes[behavior]; I reproduced the issue with[steps/version]and checked it with[tests actually run].
This is a template, not a real bug report. Omit any claim you cannot substantiate and adapt the fields to the project’s pull request template.
Why keep an open-source bugfix focused?
A bugfix is easier to assess when the behavior correction is self-contained. Unrelated cleanup, formatting churn, or opportunistic refactors can obscure which change addresses the reported mismatch and make it harder to evaluate risk. Typelevel’s guide puts the principle plainly: “Each pull request should contain a single self-contained change.” Typelevel’s contribution guide
If another change is necessary to make the fix work, explain the dependency. Otherwise, separate it so reviewers can evaluate the bugfix on its own merits.

Should I open an issue before submitting an open-source bugfix?
There is no universal sequence. The repository’s current instructions control, and project guidance differs: Typelevel asks contributors to begin with an issue or conversation, while Modular recommends prior discussion for behavior changes and other non-trivial work but allows a small, obvious one- or two-line fix with a clear test to go directly to a pull request. Typelevel’s contribution guide Modular repository
| Situation | Practical next step |
|---|---|
| Repository requires an issue, proposal, or maintainer approval | Follow that requirement before coding or opening a pull request. |
| Small, obvious fix with a reproducible case and clear test | If the project permits it, a direct pull request may be appropriate. |
| Behavior change, public API impact, unclear expected behavior, or cross-cutting risk | Open an issue or start a discussion so maintainers can confirm the intended behavior and scope. |
| Uncertain process or ownership | Read the contribution guide and ask in the project’s stated communication channel. |
GitHub’s contributor guidance likewise emphasizes checking each project’s own conventions, testing requirements, development setup, pull request process, and communication channels. It also advises contributors to check project context, write tests where appropriate, describe the change, link a related issue, and respond to review feedback. GitHub: Contributing to projects
What this explanation can—and cannot—do
A precise behavior delta helps reviewers understand the claim and what evidence to inspect. It does not guarantee a merge, establish that the patch is correct, or prove that review will be faster. The result still depends on project priorities, technical quality, compatibility, and the evidence supplied.

One study of popular, active GitHub repositories that used issues or pull requests selected 802 projects. Across repository snapshots from 524 projects, it counted 1,211 issue-template files and 315 pull-request-template files. Those are sample and template counts, not a census of open source and not evidence that templates or particular wording cause higher acceptance or faster review. 2022 study of GitHub issue and pull request templates
