Death Stranding Director’s Cut keeps the original game’s campaign as its foundation, then adds story missions, activities, tools and quality-of-life options. On PS5, it also adds platform-specific presentation and DualSense features. It is an expanded version, not a different game with a newly established ending.
What changes in Director’s Cut?
The original journey remains at the center. Kojima Productions says the new content is integrated into the core game and is encountered through discovery; it recommends starting from the beginning to experience the additions as intended. The official feature descriptions do not quantify how many hours the additions add or establish a different ending.

What new missions and activities are included?
Story missions and the Ruined Factory
Director’s Cut adds story missions and new areas, including the Ruined Factory, an underground facility with additional dangers. Kojima Productions describes the additions as extended storylines and new stealth missions. These are woven into the existing experience rather than presented as a separate campaign.

Training, racing and combat challenges
The expanded game adds a Firing Range for practising weapons, a vehicle racing track and mode, and challenges built around selected missions and boss battles. Rankings let players compare their results with other Porters. The PlayStation launch announcement outlines these activities.
What new tools and gameplay options does it add?
New combat options include a dropkick and the Maser Gun, which uses electricity to stun or pacify enemies. A support skeleton improves movement speed and cargo capacity. For deliveries, players can use cargo catapults, jump ramps, Chiral Bridges, stabiliser functions and Buddy Bots. The additions offer more ways to transport cargo and deal with obstacles, while leaving the central delivery-focused structure intact.

These specifications come from the 2021 Kojima Productions feature announcement and PlayStation’s feature guide. They describe the PS5 edition; they should not be assumed to apply to PC. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you transfer a save from the original?
PlayStation says PS4 save data can be transferred to the PS5 edition. That is separate from the right to access or upgrade to the PS5 game: the 2021 PlayStation announcement described a discounted upgrade path at launch, but its launch-era price is not a reliable guide to current terms. Existing PC owners were also offered a reduced-price upgrade through the in-game storefront, with save transfer, according to Kojima Productions’ PC release notice. Check the relevant storefront for current upgrade eligibility and pricing.

Which version should you choose?
- If you have not played the game: Director’s Cut is the more content-rich edition described by the official materials. Starting at the beginning lets the added discoveries fit into the campaign.
- If you own the PS4 original: Save transfer to PS5 is supported, but current upgrade price and eligibility need to be checked at the storefront.
- If you play on PC: Director’s Cut includes the added missions and systems. The DualSense, audio and display features listed above are PS5-specific.
- If you already finished the original: The additions provide new missions, activities and tools, but official sources do not establish a changed ending or quantify the extra playtime. Whether that content warrants replaying depends on how much more of the game you want to explore.
