Deadlock is won by turning small lane advantages into map progress, then using that progress to reach and destroy the enemy Patron. In practical terms, stay near your Trooper wave long enough to collect Souls and protect your lane, spend that income on power, and leave only when a rotation, objective, or fight is more valuable than what you give up. The right choice depends on the wave, your resources, the matchup, your team’s readiness, and how safely you can move—not on a fixed match clock.
What you are trying to accomplish
Each team advances through three lanes toward the opposing base. The route runs through lane Guardians and Walkers, then the Base Guardians, the two Shrines, and finally the Patron. The Patron is the decisive objective: destroying it wins the match. Both Shrines must be destroyed before the Patron can be attacked.

That structure gives every action a purpose. Killing Troopers is not just routine farming; it supplies Souls that make your hero stronger. Winning a trade is not automatically valuable if it costs you an entire wave. A successful gank matters most when it turns into a safer wave, a damaged structure, or control of a major objective. Think of Deadlock as a repeated conversion process:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Collect resources. Secure Souls from Troopers and, when practical, neutral camps.
- Convert resources into combat power. Use Souls for hero levels and item purchases.
- Use that power safely. Push the wave, deny the opponents space, take a structure, or win a fight.
- Turn the advantage into progression. Rotate to an objective or lane, then return to farming before your economy stalls.
The loop repeats throughout the match. Teams that fight constantly without collecting income often lose strength over time; teams that farm forever may miss the chance to convert their lead into structures and a winning objective.

How to read a lane before you act
Laning is usually a two-player contest in which each side tries to gain an advantage while preventing the opposing pair from doing the same. Before committing to a trade, push, or rotation, read four things: the matchup, available resources, the Trooper wave, and nearby threats.
Matchup and resources
Matchups determine how much space you can safely occupy. Consider your health, ammunition or ability availability, movement options, and the opponent’s likely burst or crowd control. A hero with abilities ready may be able to contest the front of a wave; the same hero with key abilities on cooldown may need to play behind cover until the next opportunity.
Resources also include your partner’s condition. A lane that looks favorable for you alone may be dangerous if your teammate is low, returning to base, or unable to follow. Conversely, an opponent who has just spent an escape or defensive ability may be vulnerable even if the matchup is normally difficult.
Wave position
The Trooper wave determines where pressure happens. Troopers can punish an overextended player with meaningful damage, so standing far beyond your own wave is not a harmless way to gain a few extra shots. Pushing your Troopers forward creates safer operating space for your side and a more dangerous approach for the opponents. It can also expose you to a gank if you advance without vision or a retreat route.
Use the wave as moving cover and as a boundary for risk. When your Troopers are close, you can contest last hits and threaten a trade with help from the wave. When they are far behind, taking a fight in open ground may give the opponent the better angle even if your hero is individually stronger.
Threats beyond the lane
Watch for missing opponents, likely gank paths, and objective activity elsewhere. A winning trade is less useful if it leaves you exposed to a rotation. Before pushing deep, identify where you will retreat and whether your teammate can see or react to an incoming enemy.

Not every lane is winnable. Your goal in a difficult lane is to limit the damage: collect what Souls you can, avoid deaths, keep the wave from becoming an unchecked push, and wait for a safer opportunity to recover. Abandoning the lane after every lost trade usually gives the opponents free structure pressure and income.

Souls are the resource that connects lane decisions to hero strength. They contribute to hero leveling and item purchases, so a player who consistently collects Souls reaches important power thresholds sooner. Troopers are a major source of this income, making wave control the foundation of a reliable economy.
Collect the wave before chasing value
When a wave is arriving, treat it as a scheduled opportunity rather than background scenery. Position so you can secure Trooper Souls without taking unnecessary damage. If the opponent is contesting, prioritize a safe collection pattern over a low-probability kill attempt. Missing several Troopers to chase an enemy through open ground can leave you weaker even if the chase looks exciting.
After a fight or rotation, check the next wave before looking for another action. Returning to lane in time to collect income often produces more lasting strength than wandering for a marginal engagement.
Neutral camps are supplemental income
Neutral camps can add Souls, but they should normally fit between waves rather than replace them. Clear a camp when the lane wave is already secured, your hero can do it safely, and leaving the lane will not expose your structure or partner. If the enemy wave is about to reach your side, protecting that income is usually more important than taking a camp in the opposite direction.
Spend with a purpose
Items and levels matter because they change what your hero can safely do next. After spending Souls, reassess your plan: can you now contest the lane, clear a wave faster, survive a planned rotation, or contribute more reliably to a team fight? A purchase is most valuable when it enables a concrete action rather than simply making your inventory look fuller.

When to stay in lane and when to rotate
Leaving lane always has a cost. You may miss Trooper Souls, surrender structure pressure, or allow the opposing pair to advance. Rotating is worthwhile when the expected contribution elsewhere is greater and your team is ready to act.
| Choice | Usually makes sense when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Stay and farm | Your wave is arriving, your structure is threatened, your team is not ready to fight, or the route to another play is unsafe. | You may miss a temporary objective or allow opponents elsewhere to gain numbers. |
| Push then rotate | You can move your Troopers forward, forcing the opponent to respond before you leave. | A shallow push may not buy enough time, leaving you absent while the wave returns. |
| Rotate immediately | A nearby fight or objective is already forming, allies are ready, and your presence can change the outcome. | You can lose a full wave or arrive too late if the route is long or contested. |
| Give ground and recover | Your lane is unwinnable at the moment, your resources are low, or the enemy has a decisive advantage. | Over-retreating can concede free Souls and structure damage. |
A four-question rotation check
- What will I lose? Estimate the incoming wave, structure damage, and time spent traveling.
- What can I gain? Identify the likely Souls, kill, structure pressure, or objective reward rather than assuming a fight is valuable by itself.
- Can I arrive safely and in time? Consider cover, enemy vision, movement abilities, and whether the fight may end before you reach it.
- Is the team ready? A rotation is stronger when allies have health, abilities, and a clear target. Do not turn a possible play into an isolated death.
Use this check quickly. Deadlock rewards timely decisions, not perfect certainty. If the lane wave is safe, your team is grouped, and an objective is available, move. If the objective is distant and your team is scattered, collect the wave and communicate that you are staying.
Turning lane pressure into structures
Lane advantage becomes meaningful when it damages the enemy’s defensive line. The early route runs through the lane Guardians and Walkers. Later, teams approach the Base Guardians, then the Shrines, and finally the Patron. Structures connect your local economy to team-wide progress: they constrain movement, protect the base, and create safer or more dangerous areas for future waves.

- Lane Guardians and Walkers: Use a won wave, a kill, or a forced retreat to pressure the outer defenses. Do not stand in the open merely to deal a few extra hits if the enemy can re-engage.
- Base Guardians: Once outer defenses are weakened, coordinated pressure matters more. Bring enough teammates to threaten the structure while keeping an escape route.
- Shrines: Both Shrines protect the Patron. Destroying only one does not unlock the final attack, so track the state of both sides of the base.
- Patron: Attack it only when the Shrine requirement is satisfied and your team can control the surrounding area. A rushed attempt can give the defenders an opportunity to wipe your team.
Structures provide rewards, but exact values and some mechanics can change with updates. Treat the in-game display as the authority for current rewards rather than memorizing an old guide’s numbers.
Map objectives that pull players out of lane
The Soul Urn, Unstable Rift, and Mid-Boss/Rejuvenator create reasons to leave a routine farm pattern. Each can offer rewards or a team advantage, but none should be taken automatically. The value depends on wave position, team readiness, enemy location, and the safety of the route.
Soul Urn
The Soul Urn is a recurring map objective that can draw players away from their lanes. Before moving, push or secure the wave when possible so the trip does not hand the opponent free income. Arrive with teammates rather than carrying the objective alone through an area the enemy can easily contest.

Unstable Rift
An Unstable Rift is another recurring contest. Its practical value is not just the reward; it can force opponents to reveal their position and create a timing window for a rotation or structure push. Do not enter blindly. Check whether your team can disengage if the enemy arrives first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Mid-Boss and Rejuvenator
The Mid-Boss/Rejuvenator objective can justify a larger team movement because it can provide a significant team advantage. Start it when you have enough control to protect the area, not simply because the boss is available. A team that begins with low health, missing abilities, or no information about opponents can be trapped between the boss and an enemy fight.
Wave versus objective: a practical decision
- Take the objective now when several allies are ready, the route is reasonably safe, and the expected reward can change the next fight or structure push.
- Push first when an unattended wave will damage your structure or give the enemy a large income swing while you are away.
- Give it up when your team is split, key abilities are unavailable, or the travel path exposes you to an easy ambush.
This is a judgment framework, not a fixed schedule. The same objective can be correct to contest in one match and incorrect in the next because the wave, health bars, and enemy positions differ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to approach team fights
Good team-fight positioning lets you contribute without becoming the easiest target. There is no universal formation that fits every hero, but the underlying principles are consistent.
Enter from a useful angle
Approach through cover or from a route that limits the number of enemies who can target you at once. Avoid walking into the center of a fight simply because allies are already there. If your hero relies on close-range damage, wait for dangerous control abilities to be used or enter when an ally can draw attention. If your hero contributes from range, preserve enough distance to retreat without crossing the enemy’s front line.
Stay active, not exposed
“Safe” does not mean standing so far away that your abilities never matter. Move between attacks, use cover, and keep a retreat path. Movement helps you avoid damage and lets you rotate around the fight as targets change. Reposition when the battle shifts rather than continuing to fire from a location that has become predictable.
Best Value
Choose a target your team can finish
Focus is more valuable than scattering damage. Look for an enemy who is already separated, low on resources, or caught away from cover. If the opponents disengage, do not chase through an unsafe corridor when you can instead secure the wave, damage a structure, or claim the objective that caused the fight.
Know when the fight is over
After a successful exchange, count remaining allies, health, abilities, and nearby waves. A won skirmish may justify a structure hit or objective attempt; it may also be time to retreat and spend Souls. Continuing to fight after your advantage has been converted often turns a favorable trade into an unnecessary death.
What to do when your lane is losing
A losing lane is a management problem, not an automatic defeat. Your immediate objective is to stop the loss from accelerating.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Reduce exposure. Farm from safer positions and use cover instead of contesting every Trooper in open space.
- Protect the wave path. Avoid pushing so far that you can be surrounded. Let the wave approach a defensible area when the enemy has control.
- Preserve health and escape tools. A low-health death gives the opponent more time to collect Souls and pressure the structure.
- Ask for a specific response. Communicate whether you need help clearing a wave, defending a structure, or punishing an overextension. A vague request for “help” is harder for teammates to act on.
- Recover between waves. Use a safe window to spend Souls, clear a neutral camp, or rotate briefly, then return before the next important wave is lost.
Do not confuse a temporary setback with a reason to abandon all lane income. Leave when a concrete play elsewhere is available or when staying would result in an imminent death, not merely because the opponents won one trade.
A beginner’s repeatable decision loop
Use this sequence whenever a wave reaches your lane or a teammate calls for help:
- Check the map. Note missing enemies, visible objectives, and which structures are under pressure.
- Secure the immediate income. Collect safe Trooper Souls unless a high-value, ready-to-fight objective demands your presence now.
- Assess your state. Ask whether you have enough health, abilities, and mobility to trade or rotate.
- Shape the wave. Push when you want space to move; hold a safer position when advancing would expose you.
- Choose one action. Pressure the lane, rotate, clear a camp between waves, or reset and spend. Avoid drifting without a purpose.
- Convert success. After a kill or won fight, take the safest available structure or objective, then return to income before the advantage expires.
Over time, this loop becomes faster and more intuitive. The goal is not to follow a rigid clock; it is to recognize which resource, location, or timing window is most valuable at that moment.
Common beginner mistakes
- Chasing after the wave is gone: The opponent escapes while you lose Souls and give up lane position.
- Standing ahead of your Troopers without an exit: You take avoidable damage and become vulnerable to a gank.
- Rotating on hope: You travel toward a fight that allies cannot win or that ends before you arrive.
- Ignoring neutral camps completely: You miss supplemental income during safe downtime between waves.
- Clearing camps while a dangerous wave hits your structure: Supplemental income is not worth surrendering the main source of lane progress.
- Starting a major objective with no control: The enemy can enter, eliminate your team, and claim the reward.
- Fighting in the open: Without cover or a retreat route, even a mechanically strong hero can be focused down.
- Continuing after the useful part of a fight: Once the structure or objective is secured, spending Souls and resetting may be better than another chase.
- Assuming one lost lane decides the match: Limiting deaths and preserving income can create a later recovery window.
Keeping this guide accurate as Deadlock changes
Community-maintained references are useful for learning the broad structure of lanes, Souls, objectives, and team fights, but Deadlock is updated and exact mechanics can change. This guide intentionally does not give supposedly permanent objective schedules, Soul totals, reward amounts, or balance values. For a current match, trust the values and descriptions shown in the game client and the latest official patch information.
The strategic principles are more durable: Troopers supply essential income, wave position controls safe space, structures connect local pressure to the Patron, and rotations should be judged against the income and safety you give up. Apply those principles to the current map state instead of memorizing a timetable.
