You can transfer data from a dead tablet only if a copy already exists elsewhere or the tablet can be made to boot and unlocked. First check for an iCloud, computer, or Google Account backup. If the only copy is on a tablet that will not start, avoid reset or restore commands and ask a repair provider whether they can work on the original device without erasing it.
Start by checking for a backup
Before troubleshooting the old tablet, sign in to the same Apple or Google account on your replacement device and look for a backup. A backup can restore only data it actually contains; it does not guarantee a copy of every local file or app.

For an iPad
An iPad backup may be in iCloud or on a computer. A computer backup can be restored to a new or erased iPad using Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, depending on the computer. If the computer backup is encrypted, you need its password. See Apple’s instructions for transferring data from a previous device.
For an Android tablet
Google Account backups can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. Coverage depends on what was enabled and whether each app backs up its data; Google says not every app does. Google Photos is the relevant route for photos and videos stored there, but do not assume downloads or other files stored only on the tablet are included. Check Google’s Android backup and restore guidance for the available backup and restore options.

Identify what “dead” means
A tablet that will not power on is different from one that starts but has a broken display or touch screen. Direct transfer generally requires the old device to boot, be unlocked, and allow required prompts. Connecting a USB cable does not bypass a lock screen, authorize a computer, or bring a device with no power back to life.
- No power or no startup: Check for an existing cloud or computer backup first. If no backup exists and local data matters, avoid erasing steps and consider repair.
- Starts, but the screen or touch input is damaged: Transfer may be possible if you can unlock the tablet and complete its prompts. If you cannot, a cable alone is not a workaround.
- Starts and can be unlocked: Use the platform’s setup transfer process or restore a backup. Check that the destination has enough storage and that the cable or adapter supports data transfer if you choose a wired method.
If the iPad may be frozen or drained
Try charging and the force-restart sequence that applies to the specific iPad model. Apple says charging may take up to an hour. These are non-erasing checks: they may make the original device accessible, but they do not themselves retrieve data. If it still will not turn on, Apple’s iPad troubleshooting guidance directs users toward service.

If the iPad is stuck during startup, Apple advises connecting it to a computer and choosing Update when prompted as a troubleshooting attempt. Do not choose Restore when your priority is preserving data: Apple states, “Restore reinstalls iPadOS and erases all of your data.” See Apple’s guidance for an iPad that cannot be updated or restored.
If the tablet boots but has a broken screen
A direct transfer is an option only if you can still unlock the old device and complete any on-screen confirmation. Google’s Android setup flow uses the old device and its PIN; transfer can use cable or Wi-Fi, and a cable workflow may need an adapter. If the old tablet cannot be used to follow the prompts, Google describes restoring a previous Google Account backup as the alternative. See Google’s Android device-transfer instructions.

- COMPATIBILITY: USB-A printers and hard drives; Micro-B Android phones and tablets
- PERFORMANCE: Supports up to 480 Mbps data transmission speed; charging capability up to 2100 mA
- USES: Ideal for charging Android phones and tablets or connecting PC peripherals such as hard drives, printers, and more
- DURABLE DESIGN: Gold-plated connectors resist corrosion for signal purity; thin and flexible cable with compact connector head works with nearly all cases
For an iPad, a computer that already holds a backup can restore that backup to the replacement iPad. Do not assume a new computer can read an iPad that is locked or has not trusted that computer; Apple’s transfer instructions cover restoring from an existing backup, not bypassing device security.
Restore an existing backup to the replacement
iPad backup
Use the replacement iPad’s setup or erase-and-restore flow to restore from the available iCloud or computer backup. For a computer backup, connect the replacement iPad to the computer that holds it and follow Apple’s restore steps. An encrypted backup requires its password. Avoid erasing the replacement device unless you are prepared for what that erase does to data already on it.

Android backup
During setup of the replacement Android tablet, choose the option to restore a previous backup and sign in to the Google Account that holds it. The setup may ask for the old device’s PIN. Google notes that backup restoration can vary by device and Android version; a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a lower one. If setup is already complete, available restore options may differ, so check Google’s guidance before resetting the replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf there is no backup and the tablet will not boot
If important data exists only on the old tablet, contact a reputable service provider before authorizing a reset, restore, or main-board replacement. Ask specifically whether they can diagnose or repair the original device while preserving its local data, and explain that the data matters more than returning the tablet to working order. Apple says service may be needed when recovery or update fails or buttons are broken, but its guidance does not promise data recovery. Whether data can be preserved depends on the model and the fault.

Android manufacturers use different recovery and power procedures, so there is no single safe button sequence that applies to every tablet. Do not choose a factory reset as a data-recovery step: it can erase local data. Google’s general description sums up the available routes: “You can transfer your data from one device to another with a cable or Wi-Fi connection, or you can restore your data from a cloud backup.” The direct-transfer route still depends on the old device being usable; see Google’s explanation of backup and transfer.
