Dead Pixel vs. Stuck Pixel: How to Tell the Difference

Dead pixels are usually black; stuck pixels remain lit in a constant color. Learn how to check for either and what to verify before seeking repair.

A dead pixel is completely inactive and usually looks black; a stuck pixel stays lit and appears as a constant bright or colored dot. That difference can help you identify what you are seeing, but it does not by itself determine whether a repair or replacement is covered.

How dead and stuck pixels look different

In everyday use, a dead pixel is a pixel that has stopped working and appears black. A stuck pixel remains lit in a constant color, which may look white or red, green, or blue. Display policies do not always use these terms consistently, so treat the appearance as a clue rather than a warranty diagnosis.

A pixel is made up of red, green, and blue subpixels. A defect affecting just one subpixel may show as a small colored dot rather than an entirely black or bright pixel. BenQ describes stuck subpixels as red, green, or blue elements that remain always on or always off in its stuck-pixel guidance.

How to check the screen

Use solid-color backgrounds as a practical visual check: a bright or colored dot may stand out on black, while a black dot may stand out on white. This does not establish the exact defect or whether it qualifies for coverage. Dell notes that some very small partial-subpixel anomalies can be hard to distinguish without magnification; its Display Pixel Guidelines explain how its terminology and assessment work.

Can a stuck or dead pixel be fixed?

Do not count on a flashing-color utility, pressure, or rubbing to repair a pixel. The official guidance cited here does not establish a dependable software remedy. Dell says a fully dead pixel cannot be restored by software or other methods and identifies panel replacement as the solution. It also warns that DIY attempts or pressure can damage the display and may affect warranty coverage. See Dell’s pixel policy for its guidance.

Will one pixel qualify for a replacement?

There is no universal pixel-count rule. Coverage depends on the exact product, the type and number of defects, warranty status, and sometimes region. Dell’s policy, for example, describes zero tolerance for bright pixels during the warranty period on certain eligible displays covered by Premium Panel Exchange. For some displays without that coverage, Dell lists a threshold of more than five total stuck pixels or subpixels. These are Dell policy terms for specified display categories, not an industry-wide standard.

Before requesting a return or repair, check both the seller’s return terms and the manufacturer’s current policy for your exact model and region. Confirm whether the policy distinguishes bright from dark defects or treats partial subpixels separately, and review any eligibility period and claim process.

What to do with a phone screen

For a Pixel phone, Google says a screen with dead pixels can be repaired and provides a warranty-eligibility process. Repair availability and cost depend on the issue, warranty status, and service option. Start with Google’s screen appearance troubleshooting guidance and repair and warranty information; do not assume a repair will be free or covered.
