A black screen does not prove your phone battery has failed. The phone may be deeply discharged, the charger or cable may not be working, the port may be blocked, or the phone may be on with a failed display. Start with a safety check, then test a compatible charging setup before deciding it needs repair.
First, check whether it is safe to charge
Do not connect the phone to power if it is unusually hot, visibly damaged, or swollen, or if its cable or adapter is damaged. Disconnect it if it is already charging and seek guidance from the phone’s manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.

- If the phone is too hot, move it to a cooler place and let it cool before using or charging it. Temperature-related charging limits or shutdowns can be protective behavior; Google explains this for Pixel phones in its temperature guidance.
- Do not heat, crush, puncture, or open a battery in an attempt to revive it. Improper battery repair or disposal can cause injury or fire. Google’s Pixel 10 safety guide warns against battery damage and improper repair.
- If the phone is swollen, do not press the case back into place, pry it open, or try to remove the battery. Google’s Pixel 11 safety guide says a swollen battery does not typically present a safety hazard provided you exercise caution, while also warning against those actions. Contact the device maker for handling and return or recycling instructions.
Check the charger, cable, outlet, and port
Use a working wall outlet and a charger and cable compatible with your exact phone. Reseat both ends of the cable, and if possible test the accessories with another device. Then try a known-working compatible charger and cable. A broken or unsupported accessory can result in slow or absent charging; changing accessories can help identify that problem, but cannot repair a physically failed battery. Google’s Pixel charging guidance recommends checking the charging setup.
Look at the charging port for dust or lint and make sure a case is not obstructing the connector. Keep the port and cable dry and clear. Do not force the plug or probe the port with metal tools or other objects.

For Pixel phones specifically, Google recommends a Google 30 W USB-C adapter or another PPS adapter rated at 30 W or more for the best charging experience, or a USB PD adapter rated at 15 W or more; actual charging speed varies by Pixel model. These are Pixel recommendations, not a universal requirement for phones. Check your own model’s instructions before choosing an adapter.
How long should you leave a dead phone charging?
There is no single wait time established here for every phone. For a Pixel that has been unused for a long time and is completely drained, Google says it may show no charging icon, vibration, or display response for up to 25 minutes after it is plugged in. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting flow also advises allowing at least another 10 minutes when the battery is very low. These are Pixel-specific instructions; follow your own manufacturer’s guidance for other models. See Google’s Pixel troubleshooting steps.

While it is connected to a known-working compatible charger, give the phone time to respond rather than repeatedly disconnecting it. If it remains unresponsive after the interval in the manufacturer’s instructions, move to the checks below or arrange service.

Once the phone has had time to charge, use the power-on or restart procedure for its make and model. For Pixel phones, Google says to hold the Power button for 5–7 seconds to turn the device on. Do not assume another brand uses the same button sequence; check its support instructions.

Check whether the phone is on but the screen is blank
A black display can be a screen problem rather than a battery problem. Google suggests calling the Pixel. If it rings while the display stays blank, contact an authorized repair center; the phone is responding even though the screen is not showing it.

Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if the phone remains unresponsive after you have checked the power source and compatible accessories, allowed the model-specific charging interval, and tried its recommended power-on procedure. Seek help sooner for swelling, unusual heat, or visible damage. Google directs Pixel owners to support or repair options when its charging checks do not restore a response.

Before arranging service, consider whether preserving data is important and ask the provider what diagnostics or repair may mean for data access. Repair eligibility, warranty terms, and costs depend on the model and region; check directly with the manufacturer or repair provider rather than assuming a particular outcome.
