Before deleting, save information you want to keep and replace Facebook Login wherever it is your only sign-in method. Meta’s cancellation deadline varies by region, so follow the date shown in your account.
What changes when you deactivate or delete?
| What matters | Deactivate | Delete |
|---|---|---|
| Can you come back? | Yes. Meta says you can reactivate the account whenever you want. | No, once deletion is complete. You may cancel a pending request within the deadline Meta shows for your account. |
| Profile visibility | People cannot see or go to your profile; Meta’s comparison says they cannot search for you. | The profile and its content are scheduled for permanent removal. |
| Photos, posts, and videos | They are retained rather than deleted. | Meta says they are permanently deleted and cannot be retrieved. |
| Messenger | Messenger may remain usable if you keep it active. Your profile picture may still appear, and people may still find you to message. Messages you already sent can remain visible. | You cannot use Messenger through the deleted account. Messages already sent may remain in other people’s inboxes. |
| Facebook Login | You can continue using it to sign in to other apps and websites. | It stops working for services registered with that Facebook account. You may need to contact those services to recover access. |
| Meta Quest | You cannot use the deactivated Facebook account to access Quest products or information. | Quest information, including app purchases and achievements, is deleted; app returns and existing store credits may be lost. |
| Additional profiles | Deactivating the account also deactivates profiles under it, though individual profiles have management options. | Deleting the account also affects profiles under it. Check the selected account or profile in Accounts Center. |
These differences are described in Meta’s deactivation and deletion comparison and permanent deletion instructions.

What deactivation does—and does not—hide
Deactivation is the better fit for a break when you want the option to return and keep your Facebook content. It hides the profile from other people, but it is not the same as erasing every sign of your activity. Messages you sent may remain visible to recipients, and Messenger can remain available if you keep it active. People may still be able to find you there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Deleting is the more consequential choice. When deletion is complete, Meta says you cannot reactivate the account, recover its Facebook content, or use Messenger through it. Any app or website that relies on Facebook Login may also become inaccessible until you arrange another way to sign in or recover the account with that service.
#1 Best Overall
If you use the Facebook account for Meta Quest, deletion can affect Quest information, app purchases, achievements, and store credits. Also check whether the account manages additional profiles: selecting the wrong account or profile in Accounts Center could affect more than the one you intended.
Deletion timing: cancellation and content removal are different
Meta’s general help page says you can cancel a deletion request by logging in within 30 days, but it also says the cancellation period varies by region. Use the deadline displayed in your own account flow rather than treating 30 days as universal. Meta says removing everything you posted may take up to 90 days from the start of deletion. During that period, the information is not accessible to other Facebook users. Meta also says copies may remain in backup storage after those 90 days and that information may be retained for legal matters, terms violations, or harm-prevention efforts. These are process timings published by Meta; they are not a promise that every trace disappears immediately. See Meta’s deletion guidance.

Before you delete: a practical checklist
- Save what you want to keep. Download a copy of Facebook information such as photos and posts. If you use Facebook to log in to Meta Quest, download relevant Quest information too.
- Replace Facebook Login where needed. Review apps and websites where Facebook is your only or main sign-in method. Add another login method or contact each service about recovery before deleting.
- Consider your Messenger access. Decide whether you need to keep using Messenger. Remember that messages already delivered to other people may remain in their inboxes after deletion.
- Check Quest purchases and credits. If applicable, review app purchases, achievements, and store credits before proceeding.
- Confirm which profiles are affected. Check whether you intend to affect additional profiles under the account, and verify your selection in Accounts Center.
- Note the cancellation deadline. If you submit a deletion request and change your mind, use the deadline shown in your account.
How to find the deletion setting
Meta’s documented route is:
- Select your profile picture, then open Settings & privacy → Settings.
- Open Accounts Center → Personal details → Account ownership and control.
- Select Deactivation or deletion, then choose the account or profile you mean to change.
- Select Delete account → Continue and follow the on-screen steps.
Labels and menus can change. If Accounts Center is unavailable, Meta’s deletion instructions also document an alternate route through Facebook settings.
