Set DDR4 memory to the highest data rate supported by both your processor and motherboard for your particular DIMM configuration—not simply the number printed on the RAM kit. DDR4-3200 MT/s is a common reference point, but it is not a universal guarantee: the CPU, board, number of modules, and memory rank can all affect the supported rate.
How to choose a DDR4 frequency
- Identify your exact CPU and motherboard. Check the processor’s memory specification and the motherboard manual for supported rates and configuration limits. A DIMM’s advertised speed alone does not establish what the complete system will support.
- Account for the installed modules. Check how many DIMMs are installed, which slots they occupy, and their rank if known. A processor’s supported rate can change with the number and configuration of modules.
- Verify the kit and board compatibility. Consult the motherboard’s Qualified Vendor List (QVL) for the exact kit where possible, and follow the manual’s recommended slots. AMD advises using DIMMs from the same packaged kit rather than combining separate kits.
- Use a supported BIOS/UEFI profile if needed. If memory is running below its advertised rate, confirm slot placement and check whether a compatible profile must be selected in BIOS/UEFI. Menu names vary by motherboard and system manufacturer.
- Prioritize stability. If a profile fails to boot or causes instability, revert to a supported setting and follow the CPU and board guidance. A higher-rated kit does not certify that the whole system will run at that rate.
Why the processor and DIMM configuration matter
The CPU’s memory controller and the motherboard both constrain the usable rate. The processor specification may list different maximums depending on the number and rank of installed DIMMs; the board must also support the configuration.

For example, AMD’s Ryzen 5 5600 specifications list up to 3200 MT/s with two single-rank or two dual-rank DIMMs, but list 2933 MT/s for four single-rank DIMMs and 2667 MT/s for four dual-rank DIMMs. Those figures apply to that processor’s stated configurations, not every Ryzen CPU or DDR4 computer. Why DDR4 may run at 2400 instead of 3200
The speed advertised on a memory kit may be higher than the rate used at first boot. Intel explains that a module’s SPD configuration can be programmed below its marketed rate to improve compatibility. So a system starting below the kit’s rating does not, by itself, mean the memory is faulty. Intel guidance on configuring RAM frequency.
On supported systems, reaching the kit’s rated profile may require selecting it in BIOS/UEFI. Intel’s XMP guidance says compatible systems can load predefined profiles through BIOS or a tuning application; Intel identifies XMP 2.0 with DDR4. Whether the profile is available and where it appears depends on the platform and firmware. Intel guidance on configuring XMP.

- Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
If the expected profile is missing or does not work, check that the DIMMs are in the board’s recommended slots and that the CPU and motherboard support the configuration. AMD recommends checking the board QVL for memory issues such as achievable speed and validating the rated speed and features. AMD system memory troubleshooting guidance.
Should you enable XMP?
If the kit’s advertised rate is above the system’s default memory setting, a compatible XMP profile may be the intended way to apply the kit’s predefined settings. Enable it only if the CPU, motherboard, and installed DIMMs support the configuration, and consult the board or system manual for the exact BIOS controls. Do not assume that every system offers XMP or that a kit’s top profile is guaranteed to work with every CPU and board.

- Supported transfer rate: Confirm what the exact CPU and motherboard support with the planned DIMM count.
- Capacity and module count: Choose a capacity that meets your needs while accounting for any rate limits associated with using more DIMMs.
- Rank and timings: Check these alongside the transfer rate; the QVL or kit specifications may provide the relevant details.
- Board validation: Look for the exact kit in the motherboard QVL and follow its slot recommendations.
- Profile requirements: Check whether reaching the advertised setting requires a BIOS profile and whether the board supports it.
The available platform specifications and setup guidance do not establish one DDR4 frequency as the performance optimum for every game, application, or system. Choose a rate that is supported and stable for your configuration rather than assuming a higher advertised number will always produce a worthwhile improvement.
