VPS DDoS protection works best when the hosting provider filters attack traffic across its network before it reaches your server, while you secure the VPS and its applications against the traffic that gets through. Four providers with documented VPS or cloud-server protection details are OVHcloud, DigitalOcean, Vultr, and Hetzner. Their published descriptions differ in scope, so none should be treated as a guarantee that every attack will leave a service online.
How does DDoS protection for a VPS work?
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack sends traffic from multiple sources to overwhelm a network or service. If that traffic fills the provider’s upstream link before it reaches your VPS, server-level tools cannot restore the capacity that has already been consumed. Provider-side mitigation can act earlier: systems identify traffic patterns treated as attacks, then filter or divert that traffic upstream of the server.

Vultr describes routing detected attack traffic to a mitigation system for filtering before clean traffic returns to the server. These are provider descriptions of their approaches, not evidence that all attacks will be stopped or that service will always remain available. OVHcloud Anti-DDoS; Vultr DDoS Protection.
How do I protect my VPS from DDoS attacks?
Use the provider’s network mitigation as one layer, then reduce the ways an attacker can reach and overload your server. Start by confirming what the provider covers for your specific VPS or cloud service, then configure the server and application accordingly.

- Confirm the protected resource. Check whether protection applies to the VPS, its public IP, or another resource, and whether the exact product and region are included.
- Check attack-layer coverage. Network and transport protections do not automatically cover application-layer requests. If your service depends on a web application or API, verify whether the provider documents Layer 7 mitigation.
- Check activation and failure behavior. Determine whether protection is automatic or must be enabled, and what happens if an attack exceeds the provider’s mitigation capacity.
- Harden the VPS. Keep the operating system and applications updated, restrict exposed ports to those the service needs, and configure host firewall rules. Provider filtering is not a substitute for server and application security.
- Prepare an incident response. Know where to check provider alerts and traffic status, how to contact support, and what service changes you can make if the attack targets an application rather than the network.
Does VPS DDoS protection cover Layer 7?
Not necessarily. Layer 7 refers to application-layer traffic, such as requests to a website or API. A provider’s network or transport-layer protection does not establish that it also detects or filters malicious application requests. DigitalOcean explicitly describes its protection as covering network and transport layers while excluding application-layer protection. Check the documentation for the workload and service you are using rather than relying on the general label “DDoS protected.” DigitalOcean DDoS protection documentation.

| Provider | What its documentation says | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| OVHcloud | VPS services are described as protected by default through Anti-DDoS infrastructure, including automated scrubbing and an Edge Network Firewall. | Game DDoS Protection is for Game Dedicated Servers, not VPS. A game server on a VPS needs a tailored firewall configuration. Anti-DDoS details; VPS FAQ. |
| DigitalOcean | Automatic protection applies to Droplets and other listed services, covering network and transport layers. | Application-layer protection is excluded. If an attack reaches mitigation capacity, traffic may be temporarily blackholed, making the affected resource unavailable. Protection scope and limits. |
| Vultr | Documentation describes DDoS protection for Cloud Compute instances against network flooding. Its feature guide includes enabling protection through the console or Terraform. | The cited material does not establish identical protection for every Vultr product or guarantee uninterrupted availability. Protection overview; Enablement guide. |
| Hetzner | Documentation describes continuously active DDoS recognition and automatic filtering before traffic reaches target systems. | Customers remain responsible for managing, maintaining, and securing their Cloud Servers. DDoS protection documentation. |
What should you compare before choosing?
- Protected resource: Verify whether coverage applies to the VPS itself, a public IP, a load balancer, or another service, and confirm the relevant product and region.
- Attack layers and protocols: Establish whether the provider covers network and transport attacks, application-layer requests, or only some traffic types.
- Activation: Distinguish automatic baseline coverage from protection that must be enabled or configured for a particular service.
- Limits and availability impact: Ask what the provider does when attack traffic exceeds its mitigation capacity. DigitalOcean documents temporary blackholing at its threshold; other providers’ cited material does not give a directly comparable failure threshold.
- Your responsibilities: Plan for firewall rules, exposed ports, application defenses, server maintenance, and incident response even when provider-side filtering is active.
Where a workload needs application-layer mitigation beyond the host’s documented scope, investigate an appropriate upstream or application-focused service. The need depends on the workload and the protection the provider actually documents; a separate service is not automatically necessary for every VPS.
