DCP and IMF serve different delivery jobs. A Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is prepared for ingestion and playback by digital-cinema systems; an Interoperable Master Format package (IMP) organizes audiovisual master assets and metadata for file-based version management and delivery. They are not interchangeable: use the format and profile named in the receiving cinema, distributor, streamer, or archive’s specification.
What a DCP is for
SMPTE describes the Digital Cinema Format as “a file-based framework that allows high-quality versions of motion pictures, called Compositions, to be efficiently represented and played back on digital playback servers and projectors” in its Digital Cinema overview (ER 1008:2022). A DCP is a collection of D-Cinema picture, sound, and related metadata intended for ingestion and reproduction by a D-Cinema playback system.

Structurally, a DCP includes a Packing List and the files it references. A Composition consists of a Composition Playlist and its referenced Track Files. A package may contain a complete composition or partial components intended to complete, augment, or replace material already distributed. The exact operational constraints come from the D-Cinema standards and the recipient’s requirements.

IMF is the SMPTE ST 2067 family of standards, designed to streamline management and processing of multiple versions of primary or master audiovisual content. The Library of Congress explains that an IMF Package (IMP) is a bundle of essence and metadata components, not inherently one media file; it can be transported as a single ZIP archive while its components remain separate assets. Components can include MXF essence files for video, audio, data, or dynamic metadata; a Composition Playlist; and XML packaging data such as an Asset Map, Packing List, and Volume Index. This organization supports versioning and file-based processing. It does not, by itself, guarantee acceptance by every platform or archive.

Both formats use playlists and referenced assets, but that structural resemblance does not make them equivalent. The Library of Congress notes that DCP and IMF are not directly related from a standards perspective. A DCP cannot simply be renamed or substituted for an IMF delivery, and an IMF is not automatically a cinema-ready DCP.

Which format should you deliver?
- Start with the recipient. Ask the cinema, distributor, streamer, or archive for its current delivery specification. Its requested format and profile control the job.
- If the request is DCP, confirm the requested DCP flavor, frame rate, picture and sound requirements, subtitles, encryption and key delivery (if applicable), naming, and delivery medium. Do not assume one cinema’s settings apply to another.
- If the request is IMF, confirm the required IMF application and version, along with the recipient’s technical and package requirements. “IMF” alone may not identify a complete delivery profile.
- For archival deposit, consult the archive’s current format statement and ask whether it needs a preservation master, a screening package, or both.
Profiles and institutional preferences are not universal rules
The Library of Congress lists its preferred DCP preservation format as unencrypted, progressive scan at 24 or 48 frames per second, with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 × 1080 pixels; if image source compression is used, it should conform to JPEG 2000. It accepts image and sound files packaged as either SMPTE or Interop DCPs. These are the Library’s preservation preferences, not universal cinema, distributor, or theatrical delivery requirements. Its Recommended Formats Statement also lists IMF among preferred file-based moving-image formats, describing MXF essence tracks, a Composition Playlist, and XML packaging data, with a final production version at original production resolution and frame rate as context. An archive’s preference does not establish that every recipient accepts every IMF application.
Validation depends on the destination
IMF example: Netflix
Netflix’s Backlot Delivery Instructions for IMF describe a platform-specific, multi-stage inspection process for primary and supplemental IMF deliveries. Photon checks XML files for SMPTE Application #2E compliance; later inspection stages review MXF tracks and technical requirements. Automated quality control checks for problems such as corruption or audio dropouts and compares metadata across package components. A failure can block an upload or require correction and redelivery. This is Netflix’s workflow, not a universal IMF validation rule.

Netflix’s indexed branded-title specifications identify SMPTE ST 2067-21:2020 or ST 2067-21:2023 (IMF Application #2E). Netflix also says production delivery requirements can vary by title and directs partners to the applicable Delivery Requirements List or their representative. Consult the current Netflix Studio Partner delivery specifications for the relevant title rather than treating those application references as a general streaming profile.
DCP validation
For DCP, confirm that the package meets the requested D-Cinema constraints and the recipient’s operational requirements. A standards-compliant package still needs to match the intended playback system and any specified security, subtitle, naming, and delivery procedures. The applicable cinema or distributor specification is the authority for those details.
