DC Arc Flash Analysis: Methods, Limits, and Safety Considerations

DC arc-flash analysis must use a method suited to the source, circuit, task, and exposure. IEEE 1584-2018 excludes DC calculations, and table-based PPE guidance has specific conditions and limits.

DC arc-flash analysis estimates the thermal energy a worker could be exposed to during an electrical arc, so the task, protective measures, and work practices can be planned for the actual system. There is no single DC calculation procedure established by IEEE 1584-2018: IEEE explicitly excludes DC calculations from that guide. A defensible assessment must use a method applicable to the system and exposure, with its limits understood.

What DC arc-flash analysis determines

An arc-flash assessment estimates the thermal hazard associated with a task on or near energized DC equipment. Its purpose is to inform task planning and protective measures, not to supply a universal answer based on voltage alone. Source type and available short-circuit current, circuit resistance and protective devices, equipment configuration, enclosure, working distance, and the task can all affect what method and assumptions are appropriate.

The result may be a calculated incident-energy estimate, a table-based PPE category or other screening result. These are not interchangeable: a table provision has defined conditions, while a calculation depends on its inputs and the model’s stated or validated range. A qualified electrical engineering assessment is needed for site-specific decisions.

Does IEEE 1584 cover DC arc flash?

No. IEEE 1584-2018 is an arc-flash calculation guide for its stated AC scope; IEEE says it does not include calculations for direct-current systems. IEEE 1584.1-2022 describes recommended scope and deliverables for studies performed in accordance with IEEE 1584. It does not turn IEEE 1584 into a DC calculation method.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

OSHA 1910.269 Appendix E also should not be treated as a general DC calculation recipe. It provides methods and an exposure table for selecting a reasonable incident-energy estimation method, but its table is organized around AC exposure conditions. OSHA states that an employer must select a method that provides a reasonable estimate for the exposure involved.

How do you calculate DC arc flash?

Start by defining the equipment and work exposure, then have a qualified specialist select a DC method whose stated application and limitations fit that case. The sources discussed here do not establish one preferred model for every DC voltage or source class, so it would be misleading to prescribe a universal formula or to apply an AC method by default.

  1. Define the task and exposure. Identify the equipment, the work to be performed, the worker’s position and working distance, and whether the task is in an enclosure or in open air.
  2. Characterize the DC source and circuit. Establish the source type and available short-circuit current, voltage, circuit resistance, and protective-device arrangement. These conditions are relevant to choosing and applying a method; do not substitute a generic system value for verified equipment data.
  3. Select an applicable method. Confirm that its scope and stated or validated range fit the source, voltage, circuit, and exposure conditions. Treat historical or iterative approaches cautiously where their application or test range does not cover the case.
  4. Evaluate the actual configuration. Use assumptions appropriate to the enclosure, task, and working distance. Open-air results should not be carried over to enclosed work without justification.
  5. Document the basis and use the result appropriately. Record the method, inputs, assumptions, limitations, and whether the outcome is a calculation or table-based screening result. Use the assessment with applicable workplace requirements and task controls.

What is the DC arc-flash boundary?

The boundary should come from an assessment appropriate to the particular equipment and exposure; it is not a universal distance that can be read from the DC voltage alone. A boundary decision depends on the method and its assumptions, including source conditions, task, working distance, and whether the exposure is enclosed or open-air. The materials discussed here do not establish a single DC boundary calculation procedure or distance for all systems.

Do not interpret a table-based PPE provision or an open-air estimate as proof that a different task or enclosure has the same boundary. The method and conditions supporting a stated result need to match the work being planned.

What PPE is needed for a DC battery system?

PPE selection depends on the specific equipment, task, exposure, and applicable requirements. NFPA committee material discussing the 2024 NFPA 70E edition describes a DC table-method context informed by testing from 2017 through 2022. It says the special PPE table threshold was raised to 150 Vdc and discusses battery short-circuit current below 17,000 A, with 1.2 cal/cm² at 18 inches or farther under the stated conditions.

Those figures are not a blanket safety guarantee, a universal DC limit, or a replacement for a task-specific assessment. The committee material says the table values were based on open-air calculations and cautions that incident energy may be higher when the task is inside an enclosure. The 17,000 A figure is part of that specific table-method discussion, not an unrestricted limit for batteries or DC systems generally.

Why enclosure and task conditions matter

NFPA committee material notes that the relevant DC table values were based on open-air calculations. An enclosure can change the exposure, and the material advises considering additional protection for work inside one because incident energy may be higher. This means an open-air table context should not be assumed to represent an enclosed task.

Standards and practical limits

IEEE 1584-2018 does not calculate DC arc-flash hazards, and IEEE 1584.1-2022 addresses recommended study scope and deliverables for work performed in accordance with IEEE 1584. OSHA 1910.269 Appendix E emphasizes choosing an incident-heat estimation method reasonable for the exposure but organizes its table around AC conditions. NFPA committee materials discuss DC-specific PPE table guidance and testing, but they are not a substitute for the full current standard.

These distinctions matter when specifying a study or reviewing its conclusions. A study should identify what method was used, what system and task it represents, and where its assumptions or range limit the result. Neither the standards references nor the committee discussion establishes a single preferred DC calculation model for every source and equipment class.
