dbForge vs. SSMS: Which SQL Server Tool Fits Your Workflow?

SSMS covers broad Microsoft SQL administration; dbForge adds specialized development and comparison workflows. Choose by the tasks, platforms, and integrations your team needs.

Choose SSMS if you need Microsoft’s broad environment for administering SQL Server and related Microsoft data platforms. Choose dbForge Studio for SQL Server if your day-to-day work benefits from specialized development tools such as debugging, query profiling, schema and data comparison, or automation. They can also complement each other: dbForge’s Schema Compare is offered as an SSMS add-in as well as a standalone application.

How the tools differ

Microsoft describes SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) as an integrated environment for managing SQL infrastructure, with graphical tools and script editors for administration and development. Its scope includes SQL Server, Azure SQL services, SQL Server on Azure virtual machines, SQL database in Microsoft Fabric, and other Microsoft data services. See Microsoft’s SSMS overview.

Devart positions dbForge Studio for SQL Server as a development and management suite. Its feature list includes SQL editing assistance, debugging, code analysis, schema and data comparison, synchronization, import and export, query profiling, monitoring, and automation. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent findings about speed or quality; see Devart’s dbForge Studio feature list.

Choose by the work you do

Workflow Which fits What to check
Administer SQL Server and Microsoft data services SSMS is the natural starting point: Microsoft explicitly positions it for management and administration across SQL Server and related services. Confirm support for the particular platform and engine version in Microsoft’s current documentation.
Write and maintain queries and scripts Both support SQL work. SSMS includes a Query Editor and related tools; dbForge lists completion, formatting, snippets, refactoring, debugging, and analysis. Feature lists do not establish which editor feels better or performs faster. Evaluate against your own scripts and conventions.
Compare and synchronize database schemas dbForge documents schema comparison and synchronization. Its Schema Compare product is available as an SSMS add-in or standalone application. SSMS also lists Schema Compare, but Microsoft labels it preview in the cited components page. Check its current status and the packaging required for either product.
Compare data or automate repeatable tasks dbForge lists data comparison, synchronization, and command-line automation. Assess how the workflow fits your review, deployment, and change-control process; the vendor feature list is not an independent operational assessment.
Use Git, migration, or Microsoft-specific management features SSMS’s documented feature set includes Git integration and SQL Server migration functionality. Distinguish generally available functions from features marked preview in Microsoft’s current documentation.

When SSMS is the better fit

Start with SSMS if you need one environment for broad Microsoft SQL administration, including connecting to the range of SQL services Microsoft supports. The current component documentation lists SQL Server 2025 (17.x), 2022 (16.x), 2019 (15.x), 2017 (14.x), 2016 (13.x), and 2014 (12.x), along with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs, Fabric SQL database, and Azure Synapse Analytics. Compatibility changes over time, so consult Microsoft’s components and features list before relying on a specific version or platform.

That page also documents TLS 1.3 and TDS 8 encryption options. Newer functionality is still evolving: Microsoft marks Schema Compare and Database DevOps as preview features in the cited feature list. Preview status matters if your team requires production-ready, generally available capabilities; check the latest release notes and documentation before adopting them.

When dbForge is the better fit

Consider dbForge when database development work regularly calls for capabilities beyond editing and administration—for example, debugging T-SQL, analyzing code, profiling queries, monitoring activity, comparing or synchronizing schemas and data, or automating tasks through command-line tools and plugins. Devart describes these features on its SQL Server Studio features page. Their presence in a product feature list does not establish that dbForge will be faster or superior for a particular team.

If schema comparison is the main gap, you do not necessarily need to replace your whole environment. Devart says dbForge Schema Compare for SQL Server is available both as an SSMS add-in and as a standalone application. Check the current product packaging and requirements before choosing that focused route.

Can you use both?

Yes. A practical setup can use SSMS for broad Microsoft-platform administration and dbForge for specialized development or comparison workflows. The add-in option offers a narrower way to bring dbForge schema comparison into SSMS, while the standalone option keeps it separate. Decide whether a second tool is worthwhile by identifying the specific recurring task it improves and checking how its output fits your review and deployment controls.

Version, availability, and cost considerations

Microsoft’s FAQ describes SSMS as a free download and identifies SSMS 22 as the latest generally available version in the cited source. Release status can change; verify the current version and download details on Microsoft’s SSMS FAQ and release information before installing.

The cited sources do not establish a current, directly comparable price or license matrix for dbForge Studio. Check Devart’s current editions, licensing, and trial terms rather than assuming all listed capabilities are included in one package. Likewise, verify current SSMS support and preview labels before planning a production deployment.

How to make the decision

  1. List your regular tasks. Separate Microsoft-platform administration from query development, debugging, comparison, profiling, monitoring, and automation.
  2. Check platform and version coverage. Match the SQL Server engines and related services you use against Microsoft’s current SSMS documentation and Devart’s current product details.
  3. Identify gaps, not feature counts. If a particular dbForge capability solves a repeated need, evaluate it directly; a longer feature list alone does not prove a better fit.
  4. Check maturity and packaging. Confirm whether an SSMS feature is preview and whether dbForge functionality requires a particular edition or add-in.
  5. Trial the workflow in your environment. Compare how each option handles your own scripts, database changes, approvals, and deployment process. The cited sources provide no neutral head-to-head benchmark or independent comparative test.
