Instead of placing database connection strings in agent or developer environments, a team can keep credentials at the gateway, associate access with an OIDC-authenticated user, check requests against centrally managed grants, and audit database operations. Those are capabilities described by the project, not independently verified security guarantees.
How db-mcp-gateway handles a database request
The project’s premise is simple: “Your AI agent needs to read the production database. The connection string is the one thing you cannot hand it.” The gateway is intended to keep that credential on the service side rather than pass it to an MCP client or agent. A user signs in through browser-based OIDC, the gateway checks the request against configured access rules, performs the database operation, and returns the result to the client. The project also says it records an audit event before returning query results.

Its advertised MCP tools cover listing servers and databases, describing schemas, sampling tables, running and explaining queries, and retrieving query history. The repository names Okta, Google Workspace, Entra, Authentik, and Keycloak as examples of OIDC identity providers. Confirm provider compatibility and configuration against the version you deploy. Which databases and deployment model are documented?
Query targets
The project lists PostgreSQL and MongoDB as supported query targets. It says MySQL and MSSQL query adapters are not supported and are on its roadmap. A database mentioned in a limited permissions-store resolver path should not be mistaken for a supported target for agent queries. Supported targets and project details

Gateway deployment
The documented setup uses an OCI image, YAML configuration, and PostgreSQL for the gateway’s own state. The repository identifies v1.5.0 as stable and in production use and gives a GHCR image name; it also advises pinning a version for production. These are release details that can change, so check the repository’s current release and compatibility notes before deployment. The project does not publish measured throughput or latency figures. How grants and database roles fit together
Access rules are described in YAML as group-by-server-by-database-by-action grants, intended for review through pull requests. The project says it deliberately has no in-band administration interface. This can make policy changes reviewable as configuration, but operators still need to decide whether each rule is appropriately narrow and ensure changes are deployed and revoked when needed. Grant configuration
Rank #2
The documented default is read-only. A query_write grant can allow data-changing statements such as INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE, but not schema changes. The project also describes least-privilege database roles, statement timeouts, row caps, and grant-level constraints such as required reasons, row limits, timeouts, schema allow/deny rules, and time windows. A gateway-side grant should not replace restrictions enforced by the database itself.
Microsoft’s postgres-mcp security guidance makes the general boundary clear: an MCP server operating as a database role inherits that role’s permissions, and server-side read-only controls should be paired with database-enforced read-only privileges. This is a useful design principle, not evidence of a direct integration or shared implementation with db-mcp-gateway. Microsoft postgres-mcp usage and security documentation
What the documented audit behavior does—and does not—mean
The project says its audit events include the user, SQL, reason, row count, duration, and outcome. It describes writing the audit record synchronously before sending the query response; if that write fails, the request fails rather than returning results without the event. Audit data is retained in the gateway’s PostgreSQL store under a configurable TTL, with an hourly pruner. Optional stdout and syslog sinks are documented. Object-storage archiving and OTLP streaming are listed as roadmap work, not shipped features. Audit and retention documentation
These behaviors are project-described features, not independently tested findings. Before relying on audit records for incident response or compliance, establish whether the configured retention period, export path, access controls, backups, and failure handling meet your requirements. The project’s documentation does not provide published performance benchmarks, so it does not establish the latency or throughput impact of synchronous auditing.

Security checks operators still own
Centralizing credentials reduces the need to distribute connection strings to agent environments, but it does not by itself secure the gateway host, network path, database account, or audit store. Review those boundaries in the environment where the service will run.
- Use dedicated database identities. Give each identity only the privileges needed for the intended tasks; use database-enforced read-only permissions where writes are not required.
- Test grants against real tasks. Check which groups can reach each server and database, whether schema rules and row limits are sufficiently narrow, and whether a write grant is genuinely necessary.
- Plan revocation. Define how access is removed when a user leaves a group or a task ends, and how YAML grant changes are reviewed and deployed.
- Review remote exposure. MongoDB’s MCP security guidance recommends network isolation, server authentication, and secrets management for remotely deployed MCP servers. Verify the gateway’s actual network exposure, TLS termination, secret storage, backups, and operational access controls. MongoDB MCP Server Security Best Practices
- Set audit expectations. Confirm retention, access to logs, and any required export destination; stdout and syslog are documented options, while object storage and OTLP are not documented as shipped capabilities.
- Validate enforcement and performance. Test the deployed version with representative queries, forbidden operations, grant boundaries, and audit-store failures. The project’s feature descriptions do not substitute for verification in your deployment, and it publishes no benchmark figures.
How to assess it against another database MCP approach
Compare implementations on the controls that determine where risk and operational work sit—not just on whether an agent can run SQL.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Credential location: Are credentials held by a central gateway, or configured on local client/server installations?
- Identity and authorization: Is user identity propagated through SSO, how granular are grants, and where is policy checked?
- Database enforcement: Do database roles independently constrain what the agent can read or change?
- Audit behavior: Which fields are captured, is recording synchronous, where are records retained or exported, and what happens if logging fails?
- Deployment footprint: Which databases are query targets, what state services are required, how is the service exposed, and how are versions managed?
- Evidence quality: Are security and performance statements documented features, or supported by published tests and measurements?
For db-mcp-gateway specifically, the repository publishes no performance benchmark numbers; the project says previously shown figures had not been measured. Do not infer throughput or latency from its feature list. Project repository and documentation
