What you need before building
Base construction is a supply chain rather than a single recipe. You need tools to harvest and shape wood, consumables for the kits and fasteners, and a location where you can work without being interrupted. Gather the core equipment before placing a kit so you are not forced to leave an unfinished wall in the open.

Tools and their jobs
| Tool | What it does in base construction |
|---|---|
| Hatchet or axe | Chops trees for wooden logs and is used when adding logs to a fence kit. |
| Shovel | Levels a foundation, places wooden logs on fence kits and buries wooden crates. |
| Saw | Converts logs into planks, which are required for fence and gate coverings. |
| Hammer | Drives nails for fences and other components; it is also required for watchtower stairs. |
| Pliers | Attaches metal wire when converting a finished fence into a gate. |
| Pickaxe or farming hoe | Performs some ground-work tasks, including certain plots and fence placements. |
Tool condition matters in practice: bring a spare where possible, especially a hatchet, saw and hammer. If a tool breaks while you are in a remote forest, the partially built structure may be impossible to finish until you return with a replacement.
Core materials
- Wooden logs: the structural pieces added to fence kits and used by watchtowers.
- Wooden planks: made by sawing logs; coverings for walls and gates consume them.
- Nails: the main bottleneck for a large compound. Industrial areas and outhouses can contain boxes of 70 nails, but the number of boxes you find is variable.
- Rope: craft it from two stacks of six rags, or make it from one Pile of Guts with a knife.
- Metal wire: required to give a fence a gate function.
- Combination lock: a three-dial or four-dial lock can secure a gate.
- Sheet metal: reinforces wooden wall sections for stronger protection against raiders.
Because nail availability is unpredictable, count your planned wall sections before committing to a build site. A small, completed airlock is more useful than a large compound with several open frames.

How to build a fence on PC
The following sequence uses the PC interaction names reported by community guides. Look directly at the kit or structure and hold the displayed action; a quick tap may only open an interaction menu instead of completing the construction stage.
- Craft the fence kit. Combine two sticks and one rope. Place the finished kit on the ground at the intended fence line.
- Prepare the foundation. Use a shovel to level the placement area if the ground is uneven. A pickaxe or farming hoe may be needed for related ground work, depending on the placement.
- Add the logs. Carry two wooden logs to the kit. With an axe or hatchet available, place both logs into the kit.
- Build the lower frame. Look at the placed kit until the prompt Build Lower Frame appears, then hold the action to complete it.
- Build the upper frame. Select Build Upper Frame and hold the action until the second frame is finished.
- Install the coverings. With planks, nails and a hammer available, look at the fence and hold Build Wooden Coverings. This creates the solid wall sections.
Each fence has an inner and outer face. Constructing the coverings on both sides creates a more complete barrier; the interaction prompt indicates which side you are currently addressing. Leave enough room behind the wall to swing a tool and to move materials through your planned entrance.
Why a fence may refuse to build
- No prompt appears: move around the kit and aim at the central post rather than the ground. Placement can also fail on slopes or when another object occupies the build space.
- The frame builds but coverings do not: check that the required planks, nails and hammer are close enough to be selected. A saw is needed earlier to turn logs into planks.
- The action cancels: your character may be interrupted by movement, stamina limits or damage. Stand still, keep the action held and secure the area before trying again.
- The wall faces the wrong way: dismantling and rebuilding is usually less expensive than trying to work around a badly oriented entrance, so confirm the approach path before adding coverings.
Turning a fence into a gate
A gate starts as a completed fence. You do not place a separate gate kit; the finished fence is modified with wire and then locked.
- Finish the fence frame and wooden coverings.
- Keep metal wire in your inventory and equip pliers.
- Look at the fence and choose Build Gate.
- Hold the action to attach the wire. The wire forms the gate hinges.
- Open the gate’s inventory and attach a three-dial or four-dial combination lock.
- Set a code while the lock is in your possession and test opening and closing the gate before storing supplies inside.
Keep the code private and avoid using a number that can be inferred from your character name, base location or public clan information. A gate is only useful if everyone who needs access can operate it without leaving it permanently open.
Designing an airlock
An airlock uses two gates or a gate followed by a second barrier, creating a small transition space. Close the outer gate before opening the inner one. This does not make a raid impossible, but it limits how much storage an intruder can reach if one gate is breached or left open. Make the airlock wide enough to turn while carrying logs, crates or barrels; an entrance that is too narrow becomes a daily liability.
Watchtowers: what is confirmed and what is not
Watchtowers can reach three levels and provide elevated sight lines, but the available guides do not agree on every material count. One guide reports four wooden logs per level, while other guides provide no matching figure. Treat that number as a community estimate rather than a universal recipe, and check the materials shown by your current server version before hauling logs.

Building watchtower stairs
Stairs are built only at a Watchtower Kit. The reported requirements include an axe, a hammer and the materials displayed by the kit. Because the exact count varies between guides, place the kit first and read the live prompts before collecting a fixed number of logs or planks. Build and test each level’s access before adding the next level; an inaccessible upper platform wastes the materials already invested.
Storage inside and outside the base
Wooden crates
Craftable wooden crates hold 50 slots. A shovel can bury them, allowing a small emergency cache away from the main structure. Burying a crate is a concealment method, not a guarantee: remember the location, avoid obvious landmarks and check the server’s persistence rules.

Barrels
Barrels are commonly found in industrial zones and hold 150 slots. Their size makes them efficient for a finished room, but they are conspicuous during a raid and harder to hide than a buried crate. Keep high-value items distributed rather than placing every resource in one barrel.
Layered storage plan
- Working stock: tools, nails and building materials needed for the next construction session.
- Daily supplies: food, water-treatment items, ammunition and medical equipment you can replace.
- Reserve cache: irreplaceable gear or surplus materials in a separate crate or hidden location.
This arrangement means a single successful raid does not erase every tool and nail you have collected.

Persistence is the least consistent part of the available DayZ building information. Community sources disagree, and private servers can change their own timers. Use the figures below as reported ranges, not promises for every server.
| Claim | Reported value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Flag-pole lifespan | 49 days | Listed by a community wiki; this is not an official Bohemia Interactive guarantee. |
| Fences, watchtowers and tents | 45 days, extendable to roughly 90 days | Community-wiki and Steam-thread figures associated with a raised flag pole. |
| Alternative watchtower and fence figure | 42 days without manual review | Reported in forum posts and conflicts with the 45-day figure. |
| Crates near a flag pole | About 43 days in one report | Anecdotal and not a general rule. |
Flag-pole radius and refresh behavior
The community-wiki description gives a 60-metre radius around a raised flag pole. A paraphrased developer post reproduced in a Steam thread says the flag refreshes object lifetimes inside that radius and lowers with each refresh tick; a forum report places the refresh at about every five days. These statements are second-hand community reports rather than a directly verified official document.

- Award winning innovative design that bridges the gap between roleplaying and boardgaming in space by integrating ship to ship and boarding action.
- You and your friends play characters as the crew of a ship laid out in modular format. Your ship is on a hex map. The enemy controls whatever challenges you face. Your continuing characters rise in power as you face tougher and more exciting challenges.
- Age 12+ / 1-6 players / 60-240 minutes playing time
- Second edition, advanced rule book sold seperately
The reported protection applies to items inside storage containers within the radius. One player said items outside the radius disappeared after eight hours, but that is a single anecdote and should not be treated as a timer. Place containers deliberately, raise the flag and confirm persistence on your server before relying on the pole for a long absence.
Official versus community servers
On some servers, structures and containers begin to despawn after only a few inactive days. On official servers, regular interaction with stored items is reported as sufficient to refresh them even without a flag. Community administrators can set different persistence values, so read the server rules or ask an administrator. If losing a base would end your run, schedule periodic visits and interact with the structures and containers rather than assuming a published number applies.

Choosing a defensible location
Distance from traffic
Look away from the coast, major cities and military bases. These are common travel routes and therefore receive more foot traffic. A remote building hidden behind terrain is usually safer than a prominent landmark, even if the landmark is easier to remember.
Access to resources
Balance concealment with practical logistics. Nearby water supports drinking and cooking, while forest cover supplies logs and sticks. A site that requires a long exposed journey for every load of wood may attract more attention than a slightly less remote location with natural cover.

Approach and escape routes
Walk the area from several directions before placing the first kit. Identify a quiet approach for hauling materials, a fallback route if another player appears and a position where you can observe the entrance without standing in an obvious window. Avoid building directly against terrain that leaves only one exit.
Redundancy
Maintain more than one hidden base or stash. A main compound can hold everyday equipment while a backup cache remains elsewhere. This is especially important when you play on a server with uncertain persistence or frequent raids.
A practical construction sequence
- Scout first: spend a full daylight cycle checking traffic, sight lines, water access and escape routes.
- Stage tools: secure an axe or hatchet, shovel, saw, hammer, pliers and any pickaxe or hoe needed for the ground.
- Collect consumables: gather rope, logs, planks, nails, wire and a lock before starting the first wall.
- Build the smallest secure room: finish a door or gate and one airlock before expanding.
- Add storage: place a crate or barrel only after the room can be closed and defended.
- Reinforce priorities: use sheet metal on the most valuable or exposed wooden sections first.
- Create redundancy: bury a separate crate and keep a backup stash away from the main structure.
- Establish maintenance: record the server’s persistence rule, raise a flag if you use one and revisit the base on a schedule.
Common mistakes and recovery
Building too large too soon
A sprawling footprint consumes nails and creates more surfaces to defend. Start with a compact room, a controlled entrance and enough space to work. Expand only after you can replace the tools and fasteners used on the first section.
Keeping every item in one room
Centralized storage is convenient but makes one breach catastrophic. Divide supplies between a main room, an airlocked section and an off-site cache. Do not advertise the location of the backup stash through repeated trips along the same route.
Leaving a gate open
An unlocked or open gate defeats the barrier. After moving materials, close it, confirm the lock is engaged and check that the swing does not clip nearby objects. Test the code with a low-value item before filling the room.
Ignoring server-specific persistence
Timers quoted by wikis and forum posts can conflict with the settings on your server. Ask the administrator, read the rules and perform a controlled check: store a low-value item, note the date, interact with the container and revisit it according to the stated interval. Do not use irreplaceable gear for this test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsControls on console and Switch 2
No console-specific control layout was verified for this guide. The action names and hold interactions can differ from PC, and updates may change the prompts. On a console or Switch 2, place the kit, aim at the highlighted structure and follow the on-screen action label rather than assuming a keyboard key or PC menu path. If a prompt is missing, check the server’s control mapping and current patch notes.
Quick Recap
Final checklist before you leave
- Fence frames and coverings are complete on the intended sides.
- Every active entrance has wire, a working combination lock and a known code.
- At least one airlock or secondary barrier protects the storage room.
- Tools and spare nails are stored where a single raid cannot remove everything.
- Crates and barrels are inside the structure or deliberately hidden.
- A backup stash exists away from the main build.
- The flag is raised if you depend on its reported refresh radius.
- You know your server’s actual persistence policy and next maintenance visit.
