Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Tool calling lets a language model ask your software to do something, such as look up the weather, query a database or issue a refund. The model does not run that code. It returns a structured request naming a tool and its arguments. Your application (or, for hosted tools, the provider) performs the work, sends the result back, and the model uses it to continue.
Providers use different names. OpenAI says “function calling” and “tool calling.” Anthropic says “tool use” and notes it is also called function calling. Google’s Gemini API documents “function calling.” They describe the same basic pattern, but request formats, execution options and controls differ, so none of the parameter names below should be assumed portable.

A concrete example: the weather lookup
You give the model a tool called get_weather with one parameter, location. A user asks, “Do I need an umbrella in Lisbon?” The model responds not with prose but with a request: call get_weather with location “Lisbon”. Your code calls a weather service, then returns the output tagged with the identifier of the call that asked for it. The model reads the result and writes the answer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTwo things follow. The model only asked; your code did the work. And the returned data is input to the model, not verified truth. If the weather service returns bad data, the model may repeat it confidently.

OpenAI’s guide defines the idea this way: “Function calling (also known as tool calling) provides a powerful and flexible way for OpenAI models to interface with external systems and access data outside their training data.”
The loop, step by step
OpenAI describes a five-step flow for function calling, and Anthropic’s client-tool flow follows the same shape:
- Send the request with tool definitions. Include the conversation plus the tools the model may use.
- Receive a tool call. The model returns a tool name, arguments and a call identifier instead of (or alongside) text.
- Execute in your code. Validate the arguments, check permissions, then run the operation.
- Send the output back. Append the result to the conversation, linked to the originating call.
- Receive the final response or more calls. The model may answer, or request further tools, so your code should loop until it gets a final answer.
With several calls in one turn, matching each result to the right call identifier is essential; otherwise the model cannot tell which output answers which request.

Defining tools: names, descriptions and schemas
A tool definition tells the model when and how to use it. Give each tool a distinct, descriptive name, and explain its purpose and each parameter in plain language. Vague or overlapping tools make wrong selections more likely.
- OpenAI: function parameters are described with JSON Schema. Its strict mode is meant to make calls conform to the supplied schema. Per the guide, strict mode requires
additionalProperties: falseand every property listed as required; optional values are expressed with a nullable type. - Google Gemini: a function declaration has a unique name, a clear description of purpose, and a parameters object.
- Anthropic: tools are described with a name, description and input schema; the documentation also notes that if a required parameter is missing, the model may infer a plausible value rather than ask the user.
Schemas constrain the shape of a request. They do not tell you whether the value is correct, whether the user may do this, or whether it is wise to run it.
Who executes the tool?
| Type | Where it runs | What you own |
|---|---|---|
| Client / custom tools | Your application | Validation, credentials, execution, timeouts, returning results |
| Server tools (documented by Anthropic) | Provider infrastructure | Enabling and configuring the tool; the provider runs it |
OpenAI’s general function-calling flow places execution in your application. The boundary matters because it determines where credentials live, where data goes, what latency you incur and what code you must operate.

Controlling whether a tool is used
By default the model decides whether a tool is appropriate; Anthropic documents automatic choice as the default. Prompts can steer this, but API-level tool-choice settings are the firmer mechanism when a call must happen or a specific tool must be used. Available options and names vary by provider, so check the current documentation.

Parallel and programmatic calls
Parallel calls
When operations are independent (weather in three cities), the model can request them together and you can run them concurrently. Gemini’s documentation demonstrates this explicitly for independent functions. OpenAI supports parallel calls on supported models, with configuration caveats in its guide. If one call needs another’s output, it must wait. Do not assume every model or setting supports parallelism.
Programmatic tool calling (OpenAI-specific)
OpenAI’s programmatic tool calling lets a model-generated JavaScript program coordinate eligible tools using branches, loops and parallel calls. The guide recommends it when control flow is predictable and code can condense intermediate results. It recommends direct calls when each result needs fresh model judgment, or when writes that affect the outside world need a clear authorization boundary. This is a vendor feature, not part of the definition of tool calling.

Safety: validate before you act
A schema-valid request is not automatically safe or authorized. Treat every call as untrusted input from your own application’s point of view.
- Validate values, not just shape. Check ranges, allowed identifiers and formats in code. Don’t let the model fill in missing details for you; Anthropic warns it may guess.
- Check permissions. Verify the current user may perform the action. OpenAI’s programmatic guide says to check arguments and permissions even when a call comes from a hosted program.
- Require approval for high-impact actions such as purchases, refunds, account changes or device control, at the application level.
- Design for idempotency. Retries and replays should not repeat an unsafe effect, for example by using idempotency keys on payments.
Handling failures
Separate three kinds of failure, since each needs a different response. These are implementation recommendations built on the call/result protocol, not behavior every provider guarantees identically.
| Failure | Example | Reasonable response |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid or missing arguments | Empty location, unknown order ID |
Return a structured error describing the problem, or ask the user for the missing detail |
| Execution error or timeout | Weather API unavailable | Retry if safe, otherwise return an error result and let the model explain or stop |
| Semantically wrong or unauthorized action | Refund on someone else’s order | Refuse in code, return a clear denial, never rely on the model to self-police |
In every case, return a result tied to the originating call so the conversation stays consistent, and let your application decide whether to retry, ask or stop.

Choosing between implementations
When comparing providers or designs, check these points:
- Schema format and supported constraints
- Client-side execution, provider-hosted, or both
- Tool-choice controls
- Parallel-call behavior and which models support it
- Validation, approval and retry duties that fall on your application
- The exact request/result format needed to continue the conversation
Official documentation shows real differences on each point. It does not support naming one provider best for every task, so test against your own workload. These guides carried no publication dates when reviewed on 2026-10-05, and model support, schema limits and syntax change, so confirm details in the current OpenAI, Anthropic and Google documentation.
