A separate 2025 prototype using a 4B vision model reported substantially lower accuracy on handwritten than printed prescriptions—and lower still on poor-quality handwriting. Its results do not establish that DawaaiDost, or any prescription-reading AI, is safe to use to decide what medicine or dose a person should take.
What is DawaaiDost, and what is actually established?
The name and claim describe an appealing idea: photograph a prescription, have AI decipher a doctor’s handwriting, and help an older relative take the right medicine. But the available sources do not identify a DawaaiDost model card, repository, license, benchmark, clinical evaluation, or released product. Its claimed openness, 4B size, capabilities, and safety therefore remain unverified.
That distinction matters. A system can detect or transcribe marks on a page without reliably identifying the intended drug, dose, route, or schedule. Even a plausible-looking transcription is not proof that the prescription has been interpreted correctly.
What do results from a separate 4B prototype show?
A 2025 conference paper describes DRISHTI, a prototype that used a camera mounted on a Raspberry Pi and a quantized Gemma 3 4B vision model to analyze prescription documents. The authors reported these results for their evaluated prototype:

The gap between printed and handwritten inputs is directly relevant to the promise of reading doctor shorthand. The poor-document result also shows why a single overall accuracy number can hide the cases that are hardest to interpret. These are the paper authors’ results for DRISHTI—not measurements of DawaaiDost, and not proof that the prototype can safely guide medication use.
Why is prescription legibility a real concern?
A 2021 tertiary-care hospital study attributed 85 of 208 observed prescribing errors (40.87%) to illegible prescription writing. That denominator is the prescribing errors observed in that study; it is not the share of all prescriptions or a population-wide medication-error rate.

The study illustrates a problem worth addressing, but it does not show that an AI reader solves it. Recognizing words is only one part of interpreting a prescription, and a wrong guess can turn an unclear instruction into a confident-looking mistake.
What would a safer medication-reading system need to do?
Extraction alone is not a safety system. A separate system called MEDIC was designed around pharmacist-developed checks and a medication database. Its described safeguards stop direction generation in specified cases when information is missing or conflicts. MEDIC addresses a different task; its study did not evaluate handwriting recognition or DawaaiDost.

The example highlights the difference between producing text and deciding whether that text is dependable enough to act on. For a prescription-reading tool, relevant questions include:
- Can it distinguish handwriting from printed text and flag poor image quality?
- Does it extract each important field—such as medicine name, dose, and frequency—rather than merely provide an overall document score?
- Does it identify uncertainty or contradictory details and stop instead of filling gaps with a guess?
- Does a qualified clinician or pharmacist verify the interpretation before anyone relies on it?
The available sources do not establish that DawaaiDost has these safeguards or a tested clinical workflow.

Is it safe to use an app to read a prescription?
Do not use an unverified AI transcription to choose a medicine, dose, or schedule. If a prescription is hard to read, ask the prescribing clinician or a pharmacist to confirm the instructions before relying on an interpretation. Treat model output, if encountered, as something that needs that confirmation—not as a replacement for it.
In particular, do not silently resolve a doubtful word or number because an app supplies a likely answer. A clear output can still be wrong, and the sources available for DawaaiDost do not establish accuracy, languages supported, privacy practices, hardware requirements, or intended use.

Do other AI studies validate prescription-reading claims?
No. A 2026 medRxiv pilot evaluated MedGemma 4B-IT on 50 adult neurology advice-and-guidance cases. It concerns text-based specialist responses, not reading prescription handwriting, and it is a preprint. It does not validate DawaaiDost or establish that a 4B model can safely interpret a prescription.
Likewise, DRISHTI’s prescription-document results cannot be transferred to another model just because both are described as 4B systems. The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: a separate prototype has been evaluated, with weaker reported performance on handwritten and poor-quality documents, while DawaaiDost-specific performance remains unestablished.
