But investors and analysts also point to inflation concerns, federal borrowing and technology companies’ demand for capital. Those competing explanations matter because Treasury yields influence borrowing costs across the economy.
What did Bessent say about rising Treasury yields?
At the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, Bessent told Fox Business host Larry Kudlow, “I don’t think we are in any kind of a dire situation,” according to the Associated Press. He also argued that other countries had seen larger yield increases.
In a separate account of his remarks at the G20 meeting, Axios reported that Bessent described the rise as a “growth story”: stronger growth prospects, in his view, were pushing yields higher more than rising inflation expectations were. He also called the market a “conundrum” and pointed to “large borrowings by AI institutions.” These reports describe related but distinct remarks; they should not be read as one single statement.
Why are Treasury yields rising?
There is no single established explanation. Yields reflect the return investors demand to hold bonds, and the sources describe disagreement about how much each factor contributes.

Growth expectations and inflation
If investors expect stronger economic growth, they may anticipate firmer demand for credit and potentially higher interest rates. Bessent’s “growth story” interpretation is that rising yields need not mean inflation expectations are worsening. Other market participants remain concerned that inflation could persist, which can also lead investors to demand higher yields.
Federal borrowing and deficits
The federal government’s borrowing needs are another concern. Greater issuance can require the Treasury to offer more attractive returns to draw buyers, while worries about deficits or fiscal credibility can add to the return investors demand. The Associated Press identifies deficits and borrowing among the factors weighing on the bond market; Axios reports disagreement over whether fiscal concerns or competition for capital is the more important driver.

Private demand for capital, including AI data centers
Technology companies are committing substantial capital to AI infrastructure, including data centers. If companies seek more financing at the same time the government is borrowing heavily, they may compete for available capital. That can contribute to upward pressure on interest rates, although the available reporting does not establish how much AI-related borrowing has contributed to Treasury yields.
Global rates and external risks
U.S. yields can move alongside rates abroad, and geopolitical developments or energy-price changes can alter expectations for inflation and interest rates. Bessent’s comparison with other countries highlights that Treasury yields do not move in isolation; it does not by itself settle why U.S. yields have risen.

How could AI spending affect yields—and inflation?
AI investment can affect bond markets through two different channels. In the near term, building data centers and related infrastructure requires large amounts of capital, which may add to competition for financing. Over time, if AI makes businesses more productive, it could expand the economy’s capacity and reduce some cost pressures.
Bessent told Axios that AI-related capital expenditures “will turn into productivity and that will be extremely disinflationary.” He said he expected benefits to start appearing “in the next six months.” That is his forecast, not a demonstrated result. The long-term productivity and inflation effects depend on whether AI investments deliver broad, sustained gains; the near-term financing demand is a separate consideration.

Are investors more worried about yields than an AI bubble?
A September 15, 2026, Yahoo Finance report summarized a Bank of America fund-manager survey as finding that fears of disorderly yield increases had overtaken worries about an AI bubble. That describes the concerns reported by respondents in that survey, not a universal investor consensus and not proof that AI is—or is not—in a bubble.
The survey finding and Bessent’s optimism answer different questions. The survey concerns what fund managers said worried them; Bessent offered a forecast about the economic effects of AI spending. Neither settles whether AI valuations are justified or what returns the investments will ultimately produce.

What the reported yield figures do—and do not—show
The numbers in the reports are historical snapshots, not live market quotes. The Associated Press reported that the 10-year Treasury yield reached 4.80% on the Tuesday it described, its highest since early 2025, and that the 5-year yield touched 4.55%, its highest since October 2025. In a September 2, 2026, story, Axios reported the 10-year yield at 4.8% on Wednesday morning and the 30-year yield above 5.3%, hovering near its highest levels since 2007. Differences in dates and reporting periods matter when comparing these figures.
What higher Treasury yields mean for households and markets
Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions: when investors sell bonds, prices fall and yields rise. Treasury yields also serve as reference points for many borrowing costs, so a sustained rise can feed into higher mortgage and auto-loan rates and make borrowing more expensive for businesses and the government.
Higher yields can also improve the returns available to savers and make lower-risk bonds more appealing relative to riskier investments. The effect on any particular loan or asset depends on more than the Treasury market alone, but the broad direction helps explain why bond-market moves matter beyond government debt.
