It is above that version’s general Mac figure, but below its Mac figure for Fusion. Those are Resolve 19 requirements, not verified requirements for the newer Resolve 21.1 release. The available information does not establish whether a particular 12GB computer will launch Resolve or perform well.
How 12GB compares with Blackmagic’s published requirements
Blackmagic Design’s Resolve 19 release announcement, published in 2024, lists different system-memory figures by operating system and workload. The comparison below is limited to those published Resolve 19 figures; it is not a confirmation of Resolve 21.1 requirements.

| Operating system | Resolve 19 published system memory | How 12GB compares |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | 16GB generally; 32GB when using Fusion | 4GB below the general figure; 20GB below the Fusion figure |
| Mac OS | 8GB generally; 16GB when using Fusion | 4GB above the general figure; 4GB below the Fusion figure |
| Linux | 32GB | 20GB below the published figure |
The differences are arithmetic comparisons, not estimates of speed, stability, or whether the application will open. Requirements can change between releases, and the operating system alone does not determine how a given system will behave.

Blackmagic Design’s support center lists DaVinci Resolve 21.1 as an update dated September 8, 2026. That establishes that the release is listed there, but the listing information available here does not give its detailed RAM requirements. Treat the figures above as Resolve 19 guidance, not as confirmed current-version specifications.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What matters beyond system RAM
System memory is only one part of whether Resolve is compatible with a computer or usable for a particular project. Available memory can also be affected by the operating system and other open applications. Footage resolution and codec, timeline complexity, effects, the GPU, and the Resolve version all influence the workload; the cited figures do not predict a frame rate or guarantee acceptable playback on a 12GB machine.
Do not treat system RAM and GPU memory (VRAM) as interchangeable. Blackmagic’s Resolve 12 configuration guide describes image processing in relation to the GPU and discusses the importance of GPU memory for some operations. That guide is historical context, not a current requirements document.

Should you upgrade a 12GB computer?
If you use Windows and want to align with Blackmagic’s published Resolve 19 general-memory figure, 16GB is the relevant reference; its cited Fusion figure is 32GB. These are not guarantees about performance or verified Resolve 21.1 requirements. On Mac, the Resolve 19 general figure is 8GB and the Fusion figure is 16GB; on Linux, the cited figure is 32GB.
Before buying memory, check the exact computer model’s service manual or manufacturer specifications. Confirm the supported memory type and maximum capacity, whether a slot is available, and whether the installed memory is soldered. A nominally suitable kit may not work in a specific computer. More RAM also will not correct an unsupported GPU, operating system, codec, or driver.
