For safer dives and steadier sushi-bar progress in Dave the Diver, follow the early missions, treat oxygen as your return-trip reserve, and bring back ingredients you can use consistently. The core rhythm is to dive and gather during the day, then serve customers at Bancho Sushi at night.
How to make your first dives safer
Learn the controls in shallow water
Use the opening dives to get comfortable with movement and the controls before exploring deeper areas. If you are playing on mobile, take extra time to learn its phone controls in a shallow area before you commit to a longer trip.

Follow the missions to unlock useful systems
Progress through the main missions rather than trying to build every part of the operation at once. A beginner guide notes that staff, farming, the fish farm, weapon upgrades, and deeper-water systems open through progression. Missions also give your dives a practical goal: collect what you need for the next step instead of filling your bag with whatever you encounter.
Plan the return before chasing another catch
Think of oxygen as a budget for the whole dive, not just the time spent exploring. You need enough to get back to the surface with your haul. Damage, fast swimming, and diving beyond your suit’s safe depth can leave less oxygen for that return than expected. Decide where you will turn back before you reach the limit; one more fish is not worth losing the rest of the haul.

How to manage depth, equipment, and cargo
Check your suit’s safe depth
Before entering a deeper band, check whether your suit can handle it. Going beyond its safe depth makes a dive riskier and can drain the oxygen reserve faster. If a mission points you deeper than your current equipment allows, treat the suit as the bottleneck rather than trying to push through.
Upgrade the constraint that is actually stopping you
There is no single upgrade order that suits every early run. One fan guide puts survival first, then capture tools or cargo; another suggests cargo first and oxygen second. Use the problem you are encountering to choose: improve the tank if return trips are tight, the suit if depth is the obstacle, cargo capacity if you keep leaving useful items behind, or capture and combat gear if a particular catch or threat is holding you up. Check mission requirements and available resources before spending.

Make limited cargo count
If your bag fills early, prioritize ingredients for dishes or missions, useful upgrade materials, and catches worth bringing back. A fan guide recommends favoring fish that provide more meat for their backpack weight, including higher-star catches, and suggests non-lethal capture tools for three-star fish. Treat that as a strategy recommendation rather than a guaranteed rule for every situation: weigh the catch’s value against its weight, recipe use, and the time or risk needed to secure it.

What to catch—and when to leave
Choose catches by usefulness, not volume
Before spending cargo space, consider whether a fish supports a dish, an unlock, or a useful upgrade, and whether its likely yield justifies its weight. A smaller haul of ingredients you can use reliably may help the sushi bar more than a full bag of miscellaneous catches. Keep the effort of capturing the fish in the equation, too: a valuable target is not a good choice if reaching it leaves too little oxygen for the trip back.

Do not turn every encounter into a fight
Observe an enemy and use a tool that fits the encounter. If the fight looks unsafe or would consume your escape reserve, leave with what you have. The independent newcomer guide recommends putting safety ahead of marginal profit; that is sound early-game risk management, not a promise that every encounter can be won with a particular tool.

Keep the menu focused on reliable ingredients
Choose dishes you can supply consistently from your dives. That makes it easier to serve the menu without spending each trip hunting a single scarce ingredient. A fan guide offers Parrotfish Sushi as one early option, but dish strength depends on what you have unlocked and can reliably catch, so do not treat it as a universal best choice.

Reinvest as systems open
Use earnings to improve useful gear and develop dishes that match your dependable ingredients. The fan guide also recommends building a balanced restaurant staff as staff systems become available. Early décor is less useful if your immediate problem is surviving a dive, carrying enough ingredients, or keeping the menu supplied. As missions unlock farming and the fish farm, use those systems to support the ingredients and restaurant choices you are already developing.

A practical early-game loop
- Check your objective and equipment. Note the mission goal, your suit’s safe depth, and whether your main constraint is oxygen, cargo, depth, or capture gear.
- Set a return limit. Decide how much oxygen you need to reserve for the trip back, allowing for damage or fast swimming.
- Collect with a purpose. Prioritize mission items, useful upgrade materials, and ingredients for dishes you can supply reliably.
- Turn back when risk outweighs value. Do not keep chasing a fish or fighting an enemy if doing so threatens the haul you already have.
- Serve and reinvest. At night, run Bancho Sushi, then spend earnings on the bottleneck or menu improvement that will make the next cycle more productive.
