DataFix is a browser-based cleaner for spreadsheets and other tabular files that mix regional encodings, date formats, number conventions, and inconsistent values. Its creator describes a workflow that runs in the browser without a file-upload API; the tool’s initial XLSX support cleans worksheet values but does not preserve workbook styling or calculate formulas.
What kinds of spreadsheet problems does DataFix target?
In a DEV Community announcement posted August 20, 2026, creator Mickey Chen framed the problem with a question: “Ever opened a spreadsheet and found Big5, Shift-JIS, 1.234,50, ROC dates, full-width characters and NULL all mixed together?” That is the project’s motivating example, not evidence about how prevalent these files are.

The examples point to several distinct cleanup jobs. Text may use different encodings, such as Big5 or Shift-JIS; numbers may use regional decimal and thousands separators; dates may follow the Republic of China calendar; and full-width characters, whitespace, missing-value markers, or damaged headers can make otherwise tabular data inconsistent.
Which files and cleanup tasks does the project document?
The creator’s announcement lists XLSX, CSV, TSV, and JSON, along with UTF-8, Big5, Shift-JIS, and Windows-1252 support. The README describes these cleaning and review capabilities:

The README lists English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese interfaces. These are features documented by the project, not independent test results or quantified claims about accuracy or time saved.
How does the browser-local workflow work?
The README says, “Your data stays on your device. Parsing, cleaning, previewing and exporting happen locally in the browser.” It also says the project has no file-upload API and is designed so the source data need not leave the device. These are the project’s descriptions of its workflow, not an independent security assessment of the live deployment, browser behavior, telemetry, or security controls.

What should you know about DataFix’s XLSX support?
The initial XLSX implementation is aimed at clean tabular values, not lossless workbook editing. You can switch between worksheets and export the selected cleaned sheet to a new XLSX file, but workbook styling is not preserved. DataFix does not evaluate formulas itself; it uses cached or displayed values when they are present.
Rank #3
That distinction matters if your spreadsheet depends on formatting or expects formulas to recalculate: this workflow should not be treated as a way to retain the full behavior and appearance of the original workbook.

The README gives Node.js 22.13 or newer as a local development requirement and documents repository cloning, package installation, and starting a development server. It also lists commands for building, testing, linting, and deploying to Cloudflare Workers. Those are project instructions; they do not establish that every command will work in every environment.

The README’s stated roadmap priorities include editable per-column cleaning rules, duplicate detection and merge suggestions, reusable profiles, richer Excel workbook preservation, a CLI and npm library, and more regional fixtures. These are priorities, not features established as shipped.
