Data Transfer Architecture: Move Large Payloads Between Services Without Overloading the Network

Keep bulk payloads off ordinary application APIs when possible. Choose recovery-aware uploads, scope storage access, and bound retries, concurrency, and request sizes.

For large files and datasets, keep the application API responsible for identity, authorization, and transfer coordination—not necessarily for carrying every byte. When your security and validation requirements allow it, let the service authorize a narrowly scoped storage upload and send the payload through the storage upload path. Choose a resumable or multipart method when a failed transfer would be costly to restart; if the bytes must pass through an application service, stream them with explicit size and capacity controls.

Choose a transfer pattern that fits the failure cost

There is no universal file-size cutoff for switching methods. The right choice depends on the provider, the cost of losing progress, connection and upload speed, and whether parallel transfers suit your capacity. AWS’s 100 MB guidance applies specifically to S3 multipart uploads; it is not a general threshold.

Pattern Recovery and size handling Network behavior Operational considerations
Single request A failed request may require restarting the transfer. Google Cloud says to consider how much time you are willing to lose on failure when selecting an upload method; see Google Cloud object uploads. Uses one transfer request; it does not provide the parallel-parts benefit of multipart upload. Use when the payload and the cost of retrying it are acceptable for your application.
Resumable upload Can continue after a communication failure. Google Cloud supports streaming uploads when the final size is unknown; see Google Cloud resumable uploads. For Google Cloud, the session is pinned to the region where it is initiated. Track session state and protect session URIs as access-bearing values. Google Cloud recommends resumable uploads for large files.
Multipart upload Parts are uploaded independently, so a failed part can be retransmitted instead of sending the entire object again. AWS recommends multipart upload for S3 objects 100 MB or larger; see AWS multipart upload guidance. Parts can be uploaded in parallel, which may improve throughput; the safe concurrency depends on measured capacity. Complete or abort the upload, and account for provider-specific cleanup behavior.
Application-mediated streaming Useful when transformation or validation must happen in the application service path. Streaming can avoid treating the whole object as one in-memory request, but does not by itself guarantee constant memory use. Incremental transfer can reduce whole-object buffering; implementation buffering and concurrent workload still affect resource use. Set explicit request bounds. Microsoft’s API guidance describes HTTP 413 for requests that exceed acceptable bounds; see Microsoft Web API implementation guidance.

Separate authorization from bulk transfer when you can

A common design is for the application to authenticate the caller, authorize the intended object operation, and then provide controlled access to the storage upload path. Google Cloud signed URLs let customers access Cloud Storage without their own storage account credentials; the operation and expiration are set when the URL is created. That is a delegation mechanism, not a replacement for application authorization: scope access to the intended operation and object, choose an appropriate expiry, and validate metadata such as allowed size and type in the application’s workflow. See Google Cloud Storage best practices.

This separation avoids routing bulk bytes through an ordinary application endpoint when that endpoint has no transformation or inspection work to perform. If policy requires the service to inspect or transform the payload, keep it in the data path and use incremental streaming rather than assuming that a large request can be buffered safely.

Design the transfer lifecycle, not just the upload call

  1. Authorize the operation. Authenticate the caller, determine the target object identity, and establish the allowed size and type before transfer begins.
  2. Choose the data path. Use scoped, expiring storage access when it fits your security and validation model. Otherwise, stream through the application service with request-size bounds.
  3. Select recovery behavior. Choose single-request, resumable, or multipart transfer based on failure cost, provider support, payload characteristics, and whether parallel throughput is appropriate.
  4. Track completion and integrity. Record transfer state and verify the resulting object according to the provider’s integrity mechanisms. Google Cloud calls integrity checking especially important for long resumable transfers.
  5. Close out abandoned work. Define how incomplete sessions are identified and cleaned up. Oracle advises configuring lifecycle cleanup for uncommitted multipart uploads to avoid storage charges; see Oracle Object Storage multipart uploads.

Keep retries and parallelism within capacity

Parallel parts can shorten completion time, but also increase simultaneous network and service load. Set a bounded concurrency based on measurements from the actual workload and infrastructure, then observe network utilization, storage behavior, and the effect on ordinary application traffic. Neither AWS’s nor Oracle’s multipart guidance establishes one concurrency setting that is safe for every environment.

Retries are recovery behavior, but poorly timed retries can intensify congestion. Prefer retrying the failed part or resuming an existing session instead of restarting the entire object when the protocol supports it. Google Cloud advises against closing and reopening an upload merely because progress callbacks have stalled, and recommends retry strategies that avoid traffic bursts. Use bounded delays and limits appropriate to the transfer protocol rather than immediate reconnect loops.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

For application-mediated transfers, enforce request bounds and apply backpressure so that incoming bytes do not outrun the service’s ability to process or forward them. HTTP chunking alone does not define application memory limits or how many transfers can run concurrently. Compression may reduce network traffic for some payloads, but trades bandwidth against CPU work; its value depends on the data and workload.

Account for provider-specific behavior

  • Amazon S3: AWS recommends multipart upload for objects at least 100 MB. This is an AWS recommendation for S3, not a universal boundary; consult the multipart upload documentation for current service behavior.
  • Google Cloud Storage: Resumable session placement is tied to the region where the session is initiated. Initiate near the bucket when using this method, and consider that placement when measuring latency and cross-region traffic. Protect session URIs as access-bearing values. See resumable uploads.
  • Oracle Object Storage: Multipart uploads support parallel parts, and uncommitted uploads need a cleanup policy to avoid lingering storage charges. See Oracle’s multipart upload guidance.
  • Azure API design: Microsoft’s API guidance describes returning HTTP 413 when a request exceeds acceptable bounds. Set and enforce limits in the application path rather than relying on clients to keep requests small. See Web API implementation guidance.

Provider thresholds, session behavior, and cleanup details can change. Check the applicable provider documentation when implementing or revising the transfer path.
