Data Center Radiation: What Facilities Actually Emit

Data centers can produce non-ionizing ELF fields from electrical equipment and RF fields if wireless transmitters are present. Neither is the same as X-rays or radioactive emissions.

Data centers can produce non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMF): extremely low-frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields from electrical current in power equipment and wiring, and radiofrequency (RF) fields if wireless transmitters are present. These are not X-rays. The sources cited here do not establish routine ionizing radiation from ordinary data-center servers or power equipment, or a single exposure level that applies to every facility.

What kinds of fields can a data center produce?

ELF fields from electrical equipment

Electric and magnetic fields occur wherever electric current flows, including cables, wiring, power lines and appliances. Data-center power equipment and wiring can therefore produce ELF fields. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), these fields are strongest close to their source and weaken with distance.

RF fields from wireless transmitters

Radiofrequency fields are radio waves, a form of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation. They may be present where wireless transmitters are used, but their presence and strength depend on the equipment and site. WHO’s general RF guidance is not a data-center-specific exposure assessment.

Is data-center radiation ionizing?

“Radiation” includes different kinds of energy. The ELF fields associated with electrical current and RF signals from wireless transmitters are non-ionizing; they do not amount to X-rays or radioactive particles. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s overview of electronic product radiation uses the term broadly for both ionizing and non-ionizing emissions and lists power-generation and transmission equipment among low-frequency examples. That broad regulatory category does not establish that ordinary data-center servers emit X-rays or radioactive material.

Does living near a data center mean exposure to a particular level?

No universal data-center exposure figure is established in the sources cited here. Actual fields depend on the equipment, electrical current, layout and distance from the source. WHO provides illustrative exposure levels for other sources, such as computer screens and power lines, but those are not measurements of data centers. A number for one type of source should not be presented as a facility-wide figure.

What does the health evidence say?

ELF fields

WHO’s 2007 ELF fact sheet reports that its expert task group found no substantive health issues related to ELF electric fields at levels generally encountered by the public. For long-term exposure to ELF magnetic fields, it describes the evidence concerning childhood leukemia as uncertain and substantially weaker than the evidence needed to infer causation. These are population-level conclusions, not measurements or a health assessment of a particular data center. See the WHO ELF fact sheet.

  • All-in-One Detection: RT-100S 3-in-1 EMF Reader measures Electric (EF), Magnetic (MF), and Radio Frequency (RF) fields to monitor radiation in your home, office, or outdoors.EF (Electric Field): Detects radiation from appliances like microwaves, refrigerators, and power lines.MF (Magnetic Field): Measures magnetic radiation from devices like motors, microwaves, and refrigerators.RF (Radio Frequency): Monitors radiation from Wi-Fi routers, cell phones, and 5G signals. It’s also great for paranormal investigations, detecting EMF changes linked to ghostly activity.
  • Easy to Use: ERICKHILL Radiation Detector ready to measure instantly upon powering on—no complicated setup required. All three field strengths display directly on the screen, letting you see electric, magnetic, and RF readings at a glance. Ideal for users of all experience levels.
  • Clear Color-Coded Screen: The large display features a three-color backlight indicator (green, orange, and red) that changes based on radiation levels, giving you instant visual feedback on EMF exposure to easily assess low, moderate, and high radiation zones.
  • Triple Alarm Modes: Equipped with sound, screen, and light alerts that help you identify areas with higher radiation levels, this EMF meter ensures you’re always aware of your environment. You can easily turn off the sound alerts if preferred, while the visual and light indicators will still highlight areas with higher radiation, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.
  • Convenient and Energy-Saving Design: Our emf detector equipped with unit switching for customized readings, a Type-C charging port for fast, easy charging, and an automatic shutoff feature to save battery, this EMF detector is portable, energy-efficient, and made for frequent use.

RF fields

WHO’s RF materials describe heating as the main established biological effect at sufficiently high field levels and say that normal public exposures are much lower than levels needed for significant heating. WHO’s RF Q&A also says a health-risk assessment monograph was being undertaken. These general statements are not a site-specific finding or a guarantee about every possible exposure.

When does a high-voltage substation matter?

A data center co-located with a high-voltage substation is a distinct engineering situation. ITU-T Recommendation K.125 addresses electromagnetic disturbances and protection in that setting, including server immunity to power-frequency magnetic fields and separation and protective measures. It concerns electromagnetic compatibility for a specific infrastructure arrangement; it is not evidence that every data center is next to a substation or a public-health finding about all facilities.

How to investigate a specific location

If a genuine exposure concern remains, start by identifying the likely source rather than assuming that all facilities have the same emissions:

  1. Identify whether the concern is about power-frequency ELF fields, wireless RF transmitters, or nearby high-voltage infrastructure.
  2. Establish the distance between the relevant source and the location of concern. ELF field strength generally diminishes with distance, but the amount varies by source and site.
  3. For a site-specific concern, seek a qualified assessment that follows applicable local guidance. National exposure standards and guidance can vary.
  4. If the data center shares a site with a high-voltage substation, note that ITU-T K.125 addresses this specialized engineering case.

The sources cited here do not establish a general need for residents to buy a consumer EMF meter or shielding product, nor do they provide a universal measurement protocol for data centers.
