What should I do first after getting a breach notification?
- Read the notice carefully. Identify which information was exposed, when the incident occurred if stated, and whether the organization offers free credit monitoring or identity theft insurance. Check enrollment terms and deadlines before deciding whether to use an offer.
- Use the FTC’s breach-response guide. Visit IdentityTheft.gov/databreach and follow the recommendations for the specific information involved.
- Secure exposed accounts. Change affected passwords, including on other services where you reused them, and turn on multifactor authentication when available. The FTC also advises using a known legitimate website address or phone number to contact a company rather than following an unexpected email or text link. What if my password was exposed?
Change it on the affected service and anywhere else you used the same password. Make each replacement unique, enable two-factor authentication where available, and sign out of other sessions if the account provides that option. For email or social accounts, check that recovery email addresses and phone numbers are still yours, and look for unfamiliar forwarding rules. The FTC provides more steps for a compromised account in its account recovery advice.

What if my Social Security number was exposed?
Review your credit reports and look for accounts or activity you do not recognize. Consider placing a credit freeze with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus. If you find signs of misuse, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan. The appropriate response depends on what was exposed and whether there is evidence of misuse; the FTC’s breach-response guidance lays out steps by data type.
Should I use a credit freeze or a fraud alert?
Both are free, but they work differently. A freeze restricts access to your credit report; a fraud alert asks businesses to verify your identity before granting new credit. The FTC compares them as follows:

Choose based on whether you expect to apply for credit soon and how much friction you are willing to accept. If you freeze your reports and later apply for credit, ask the lender which bureau it will check. You can lift the freeze at that bureau for the needed period and restore it afterward. A freeze does not prevent fraudulent charges on existing bank or card accounts, so keep reviewing those statements. What if I already see a fraudulent account or charge?
- Contact the affected company’s fraud department, explain that you suspect identity theft, and ask it to close or freeze the account or address the charge.
- Change the account’s passwords and PINs. Review credit reports and bank or card statements for other unfamiliar activity.
- Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze, depending on the situation.
- Report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC’s service provides a free, personalized recovery plan and supporting forms; its recovery steps explain what to do next.
Is paid identity theft protection necessary?
Not necessarily. If the breached organization offers free monitoring, the FTC advises considering it. Before paying for any service, compare what data it monitors, how quickly it sends alerts, what recovery assistance it provides, the price after any free period, and any insurance exclusions or deductible. Check for overlap with existing coverage. Credit monitoring watches credit reports; identity monitoring or recovery services may cover other data or offer help, but none replaces securing exposed accounts or checking statements. Identity theft insurance generally does not reimburse money stolen by scammers. The FTC discusses identity theft services and credit monitoring and insurance.
