Choose Dashlane if you want a managed password service with cloud sync, autofill and plan-based sharing; choose KeePass if you want free, open-source software and are willing to manage the database, apps and synchronization yourself. They are different kinds of password-management workflows, not interchangeable products. “KeePass” can mean version 1.x, version 2.x or a compatible third-party app, so check the exact edition and client before relying on a feature.
How the two options differ
| What matters | Dashlane | KeePass |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A subscription-based password-management service with documented web, Android, iPhone and macOS apps. Dashlane’s app feature list | Free, open-source password database software with distinct editions and compatible third-party clients. The official comparison describes KeePass 2.x support across Windows and, via Mono, Linux, macOS, BSD and other systems. KeePass edition comparison |
| Sync and backup | Dashlane manages encrypted cloud synchronization, according to its security documentation. Dashlane security documentation | You choose where the database lives and how it is synchronized and backed up. KeePass 2.x lists synchronization and shared editing, but that does not mean a cloud service is built in. KeePass edition comparison |
| Sharing | Secure sharing is listed in the personal-plan features, with plan-specific details. Dashlane personal-plan comparison | KeePass 2.x lists shared database editing. That is not automatically equivalent to consumer sharing with granular recipient permissions. KeePass edition comparison |
| Passkeys | Passkey management is documented across Dashlane’s listed apps, subject to feature exceptions. Dashlane app feature list | The KeePass 2.x comparison identifies passkey functionality as plugin-supported. Confirm the exact edition, plugin and target platform. KeePass edition comparison |
| Cost and account model | Current personal plans are Premium for one member and Friends & Family for ten members. Dashlane says it no longer sells several legacy plans or offers monthly subscriptions for new plan purchases. Dashlane personal-plan comparison | The KeePass software is free. Your total effort may include selecting compatible apps and setting up storage, synchronization and backups. KeePass edition comparison |
Which one fits your workflow?
Choose Dashlane for a managed, multi-device routine
- You want the service to handle encrypted cloud sync rather than arrange database synchronization yourself.
- You value built-in autofill and secure sharing within the current plan structure.
- You prefer documented apps for web, Android, iPhone and macOS, while checking exceptions for individual features.
- You want a subscription service rather than maintaining a local database workflow.
Dashlane’s current personal lineup includes Premium for one member and Friends & Family for ten accounts under one subscription. The pricing page says members receive the plan’s features except VPN, while the plan manager receives Premium features; do not assume VPN is available to every family member. Dashlane’s support comparison says Free, Premium Plus, Premium Plus Family, Essentials and Advanced are no longer sold, and new plan purchases are not available monthly. Existing subscriptions may renew differently depending on where they were purchased. Sync, sharing and platform details to check
Dashlane presents sync as part of a managed service. KeePass 2.x has synchronization and shared-editing features in its comparison, but the user still needs a deliberate arrangement for the database file, synchronization and backup. The choice is less “cloud versus no cloud” than “who configures and maintains the data workflow.”
Likewise, Dashlane’s secure sharing and KeePass shared database editing serve different models. A shared database file does not by itself supply the same recipient controls as a service feature designed for sharing. Decide whether you need to give someone a particular credential or collaborate on a database, then verify how your chosen setup handles access and changes.

Dashlane Support describes the service as “built on the principle of zero knowledge, meaning only you have access to the data in your Dashlane vault.” It also says the Master Password is not stored on Dashlane servers and is never sent over the internet. These are Dashlane’s descriptions of its architecture, not an independent verdict that it is categorically safer than KeePass. Dashlane security documentation

Dashlane’s security article says encrypted data is stored in EU West AWS by default and notes that some professional teams may request U.S. East during team creation. That statement concerns the vendor’s documented setup and professional-team options; it should not be treated as a personal-plan data-residency guarantee. Dashlane security documentation
