Yes—DARPA moved AI-controlled F-16 flight algorithms from simulated dogfights to tests in the air. The milestones are distinct: the 2020 AlphaDogfight Trials were virtual, while later ACE demonstrations put AI algorithms aboard the X-62A, a modified F-16 test aircraft, for live-flight tests against a human-piloted F-16. These were research tests, not evidence that pilotless AI fighter jets are operational.
What happened in the virtual dogfights?
DARPA’s AlphaDogfight Trials in August 2020 put eight teams in simulated one-on-one F-16 dogfights. In DARPA’s 2021 account, the winning AI beat an experienced F-16 pilot five times in five simulated engagements. The 5–0 result belongs to the simulator phase; it was not a score from live aircraft combat. DARPA’s 2021 report

How did the work move from simulation to flight?
Initial X-62A/VISTA flights
DARPA next tested ACE flight algorithms on the X-62A, also known as VISTA, a specially modified two-seat F-16 test aircraft. Initial flights took place in December 2022 and were reported in February 2023. A safety pilot was aboard and could take control if necessary. AI versus a human-piloted F-16
On April 17, 2024, DARPA announced that ACE had conducted the first in-air tests of AI algorithms autonomously flying an F-16 against a human-piloted F-16 in within-visual-range scenarios. The demonstrations took place in 2023 and continued in 2024 at the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California. DARPA’s April 2024 announcement

“Autonomously flying” describes the algorithms’ role in controlling the aircraft during the tests; it does not mean the aircraft was operating without human oversight. DARPA’s accounts describe a test setting and do not report a public win-loss score for the in-air engagements.

Does this mean AI jets can fly without pilots?
Not on the evidence DARPA has reported here. The initial X-62A flights had a safety pilot aboard, and later test activity also retained human pilots in the cockpit to monitor AI. The tests show progress in evaluating autonomy under controlled conditions; they do not establish routine pilotless operations or autonomous use of weapons in combat.

What is the newer VENOM testing?
VENOM is a separate, newer testbed activity, not another name for the AlphaDogfight simulation or the X-62A ACE demonstrations. In a July 16, 2026 update, DARPA reported AI-controlled in-air testing with VENOM-modified F-16s while human pilots monitored the AI from the cockpit. DARPA said the VENOM fleet will support future live-flight testing for its AIR program and research toward teams of autonomous aircraft.
