Dan Houser says he has not watched Grand Theft Auto VI’s extended reveal and will try to avoid it so the game does not distract or disrupt him creatively. The former Rockstar Games writer described this as part of a broader habit: when he plays open-world games, he starts analyzing how their teams made them instead of concentrating on his own work.
Why is Dan Houser avoiding GTA 6?
Houser gave the explanation in a Variety Strictly Business interview, reported by New York Metropolitan on October 2, 2026. He said, “I haven’t seen it yet. I will try and avoid it because I always try and avoid stuff that’s going to distract or disrupt me creatively.”

He also said he wants to avoid comparing another studio’s choices with what he might have done differently: “I’m always trying to think about new ways of doing it, not sit there in some kind of comparison of what I would have done differently.” His comments describe a way of protecting his attention, not a protest against Rockstar or a judgment about GTA 6.

Does he avoid other open-world games, too?
Yes. Houser said he does not play many open-world games because he can begin picking apart the teams’ strengths and weaknesses while playing. “I find when I play them, I can almost deconstruct the strengths and weaknesses of the team in real time and it’s distracting,” he said in the interview, as quoted by New York Metropolitan.

That makes his comments about GTA 6 an example of a wider creative habit. He has not said he will never play it; he said he had not seen the extended reveal and would try to avoid material that could interfere with his creative focus.
Does Houser’s team avoid current games?
No. Houser said his team keeps up with new games and trends, while he personally tries to seek out new approaches rather than compare his work with other developers’ decisions. The distinction matters: his individual choice to limit exposure is not evidence of an organization-wide information blackout.

What is Absurd Ventures working on?
Houser is working at Absurd Ventures, which the interview coverage describes as developing two game projects:
- An open-world comedy action-adventure that leans into comedy and character memory.
- A dystopian science-fiction story about a video game development that goes wrong and a rogue AI that becomes sentient.
The coverage does not establish that Houser has any role in developing GTA 6. Video Games Chronicle’s October 3, 2026 report identifies him as a Rockstar Games co-founder and former GTA writer who left Rockstar in 2020, and attributes the comments to the same Variety interview.
