Choose a daily word puzzle if you want a short, rule-bound challenge; choose a crossword if you enjoy solving clues and fitting answers together. Neither is a proven way to prevent cognitive decline, so let enjoyment and the kind of challenge you want guide the choice.
How daily word puzzles differ from crosswords
“Daily word puzzle” covers several formats, not one standard game. In Wordle, players guess a different five-letter word each day. Connections presents 16 words to sort into four groups based on what they have in common. Both examples give you a compact task with defined rules. A crossword gives you clues and a grid: answers intersect, so solving one can help you work out another. Puzzle size, clue style and difficulty vary.

| What to compare | Daily word puzzles | Crosswords |
|---|---|---|
| How you solve it | Depending on the game, use letter feedback, identify word groupings or spot patterns. | Work from clues and make intersecting answers fit the grid. |
| Session shape | Many offer one daily challenge. | Length and pace vary with the puzzle. |
| Format | Varies by game. | Can be completed on paper or on a phone. |
| What may appeal | A compact challenge with fixed rules. | Clue solving and drawing on broader word knowledge. |
These are tendencies, not strict boundaries: neither format uses only one mental skill, and the right level of difficulty is personal.

Are Wordle and crosswords good for your brain?
Playing can be engaging, but that is not the same as evidence that a puzzle prevents dementia or reliably improves cognition. In an April 30, 2024 report, Northeastern University’s Susanne Jaeggi, a professor with its Center for Cognitive and Brain Health, said research directly examining newer Times games was limited. “Whether it’s exactly these games, that’s an open question, because a lot of these are new and there’s not a lot of (research) out there.” Northeastern University’s report also cited historical figures attributed to The New York Times: 4.8 billion Wordle plays, 2.3 billion Connections plays and 8 billion total puzzle and game plays in 2023. Those are past engagement totals, not current usage or proof of a health effect.

One 78-week randomized trial at two sites compared computerized games with crossword training in people with mild cognitive impairment. At week 78, the crossword group had a modest advantage on the ADAS-Cog measure; other secondary outcomes showed no differences. The result applies to the study’s defined clinical population and training program. It does not establish that everyday crosswords prevent cognitive decline in healthy people. The trial report describes that specific comparison.
A Winter 2025 UCLA Health article summarizes research suggesting crosswords may be useful for some older adults, including people with mild cognitive impairment, and notes they can be done on paper or a phone. That is not a guarantee of benefit for any individual. Read UCLA Health’s summary for its discussion of the evidence.

Which puzzle should you choose?
- Pick a daily word puzzle if a short challenge with a fixed set of rules sounds satisfying.
- Pick a crossword if you like reasoning from clues, recalling words and checking answers against intersecting entries.
- Try both if you are undecided. Start at a comfortable difficulty; switch games or adjust difficulty if a puzzle feels frustrating or tedious rather than enjoyable.
Crosswords do not require a paper book: you can play on a phone or use paper if that suits you. Choose the format that makes it easiest to return to the puzzle for fun, not as a health obligation.
