Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

D-Link has not confirmed which hardware revisions or regions are affected, and it has not stated that a fix or replacement is available. Check your device’s exact revision and firmware, then reduce its exposure while D-Link investigates.
Is your DIR-822A affected?
D-Link names the DIR-822A running firmware A_101 in its security announcement SAP10516, published September 18, 2026 and updated September 21, 2026. The advisory labels both investigations open. Hardware revision and regional scope are still under review, so the available information does not establish that every DIR-822A revision—or devices in every region—is affected.

Check the label on the router and its administration interface for the complete model, hardware revision, and installed firmware version. D-Link advises customers to verify all three before taking action. Its general security bulletin explains that advisories provide information to help assess impact while withholding details that could enable exploit development.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat are the two reported vulnerabilities?
Both issues are described as network-reachable and have public proof-of-concept reporting in D-Link’s advisory, but they affect different components and have different access requirements.

| CVE | Component and issue | Access requirement | Severity scores |
|---|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-86296 | Stack-based buffer overflow in udhcpcd, associated with strcpy in udhcpcd/serverpacket.c |
Network attack vector; no authentication or user interaction required, according to D-Link | CVSS 3.1: 10.0; CVSS 4.0: 10.0, as reported by D-Link |
| CVE-2026-86510 | Out-of-bounds write in the L2TP Control Message Parser’s tunnel_set_params function |
Network attack vector; low privileges required and no user interaction, according to D-Link. The CVE record says it can be launched remotely. | CVSS 3.1: 9.9; CVSS 4.0: 9.4, as listed in the CVE record |
CVE-2026-86296: DHCP buffer overflow
D-Link says a specially crafted request could overflow a stack buffer in the DHCP client daemon component udhcpcd. Successful exploitation may cause memory corruption affecting confidentiality, integrity, or availability. The advisory reports no authentication requirement, making this the pre-authentication issue of the pair.
CVE-2026-86510: L2TP parser out-of-bounds write
This flaw is in the L2TP Control Message Parser. D-Link lists low privileges as required. The CVE record, published September 8, 2026 and assigned by VulDB as CNA, describes the out-of-bounds write and says it can be launched remotely. The record notes public disclosure and that the exploit may be used; that language and the severity score do not establish that attacks have occurred.

What to do while D-Link investigates
- Confirm the device details. Record the complete DIR-822A model, hardware revision, and installed firmware version from the device label and administration interface.
- Reduce internet exposure. D-Link’s advisory says: “Ensure the device is not unnecessarily exposed to the public Internet.” Avoid exposing router services publicly unless necessary.
- Restrict remote management. Disable or limit remote administration if you do not need it.
- Limit administrative access. Use firewall or network-access controls to allow administration only from trusted systems and users.
- Monitor regional support guidance. Check the D-Link support site for your region for updates to the advisory and any firmware guidance.
- Install only a matching firmware release. If D-Link publishes an update, verify that it is specifically for your exact model and hardware revision. D-Link warns that firmware for a different revision may not be compatible.
Has D-Link released a fix or told owners to replace the router?
The advisory does not state that updated firmware is available or appropriate, and it does not direct all owners to replace the router. Product lifecycle status and whether an update is available remain under review. D-Link says it will provide retirement and replacement guidance if it determines the product is no longer supported. Until then, do not assume the device is end-of-life or install firmware intended for another revision.

What the severity ratings do—and do not—mean
CVSS scores assess vulnerability severity; they are not counts of incidents or evidence of active exploitation. D-Link assigns CVSS 3.1 and 4.0 scores of 10.0 to CVE-2026-86296. The CVE record lists 9.9 under CVSS 3.1 and 9.4 under CVSS 4.0 for CVE-2026-86510. Neither cited record establishes an exploitation rate or confirms attacks in the wild.
