Cypress runs in a browser. It can test a browser-based version of your app, mobile web layouts, or a web surface such as React Native Web—but those tests do not exercise an installed app’s native UI or device behavior.
For installed-app end-to-end testing, React Native’s testing guide names Detox, Appium, and Maestro. Keep Cypress for web coverage if you have a web counterpart, and choose a native testing route based on your React Native or Expo setup, compatibility needs, and CI environment.
What Cypress can and cannot test
Cypress’s documented boundary is the browser: its FAQ says it cannot run on a native mobile app, while noting that it can test mobile browser functionality and mobile applications developed in a browser, such as Ionic apps. Cypress FAQ
- Native React Native app: Cypress does not execute the installed iOS or Android app or its native UI.
- Mobile website: Cypress can test browser-rendered pages, including layouts at mobile viewport sizes.
- Browser-based app: Cypress can test an app whose interface runs in a browser, including a web counterpart where your project provides one.
Changing a Cypress test’s viewport only changes the browser’s dimensions. It does not turn that browser test into a test of a simulator, physical phone, native navigation, or native UI.

Can you use Cypress with React Native Web?
Yes, if the surface being tested is rendered as a web application. Cypress supports React browser end-to-end testing, and its component-testing documentation covers React 18 and 19 with Vite, Webpack, and Next.js. Cypress React component testing
That support is for React running in the browser; it is not a claim of support for native React Native execution. A Cypress suite can therefore cover a browser counterpart while a separate native suite covers the installed iOS and Android apps.

Which tools can test native React Native apps?
React Native’s testing overview names Detox, Appium, and Maestro as end-to-end options. It does not declare one universally best choice. Compare the execution target, app setup, framework compatibility, and how your CI system builds and runs the app. React Native testing overview
| Option | What the cited documentation establishes | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Detox | Built for end-to-end testing React Native apps on a device or simulator. Detox Getting Started | Confirm support for your React Native version and architecture. The Detox v20.x documentation reports full New Architecture compatibility for React Native 0.77.x–0.84.x; that range is version-sensitive. Expo support is community-driven, and Detox directs Expo users to Expo setup guidance. |
| Appium | Named by React Native’s testing overview as an end-to-end testing option. | Check its fit with your app, target platforms, CI environment, and desired test workflow. |
| Maestro | Named by React Native’s testing overview. Expo documents a workflow for running Maestro flows against Android and iOS development builds. | For Expo’s documented EAS Workflows route, note that the Maestro job type is marked alpha. Expo Maestro E2E workflow |
Choosing a setup for your project
If you ship both a web app and native apps
Use Cypress for browser-rendered flows and a native end-to-end tool for the installed app. Keep test expectations aligned where the user journey is shared, but avoid treating a successful web test as evidence that native rendering or device-specific behavior works.

If your app uses Expo
Expo documents using EAS Workflows to build development apps and run Maestro flows against Android and iOS builds. The documented Maestro job type is alpha, so verify its current status and suitability for your release pipeline before making it a required gate. Expo EAS Workflows introduction
If you use a non-Expo React Native setup
Evaluate Detox, Appium, or Maestro against your actual React Native version, app architecture, build process, and CI runner. For Detox specifically, consult the current environment setup guidance rather than assuming compatibility from the tool’s React Native focus.
Keep native end-to-end coverage focused
React Native’s testing guidance cautions that end-to-end tests are slower and more prone to flakiness, and that they take effort to run and maintain. Reserve them for high-value journeys where testing the running app matters, such as authentication, core functionality, and payments. Use faster lower-level tests for logic that does not need a full app running.

If you need screenshots of a web surface—not native app testing—ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP capture of a web URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo can remove cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Cypress support React Native?
It supports React applications running in a browser, but it does not run native React Native apps on iOS or Android.
Does setting Cypress to a phone-sized viewport test an iPhone or Android app?
No. It tests a browser at the selected dimensions, not an installed app on a device or simulator.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Cypress and a native testing tool be used in the same project?
Yes. Cypress can cover the browser-rendered surface, while a native end-to-end tool covers installed-app flows.
