Cypress Keyboard Shortcuts: What’s New in cy.press()?

Cypress’s cy.press() dispatches native single-key events for navigation and focus checks. See its version history, supported use cases, and how it differs from cy.type().
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

cy.press() is Cypress’s command for dispatching a single native keyboard key event to the browser window. Added in Cypress 14.3.0 for Tab, it now supports more named keys and characters; use it for keyboard navigation and focus behavior, and use cy.type() to enter text or send supported key sequences.

What cy.press() does

The current Cypress API describes cy.press() as dispatching keydown and keyup directly to the browser window. It is intended for single-key interactions such as Tab, arrow keys, Enter, and Escape—not as a way to type a word into a field.

The command yields null. Make assertions in subsequent Cypress commands rather than chaining an assertion onto cy.press().

What changed by Cypress version

Version Change
14.3.0 Added cy.press() with native Tab-event support. Cypress lists the release date as April 8, 2025.
15.1.0 Expanded support to named keys and single- and multi-codepoint UTF-8 characters.
15.3.0 Added {esc} key support, per the API history.
15.19.0 Fixed a small renderer-memory retention issue associated with each call in Chromium-based browsers. This is a historical changelog item; the cited changelog does not say it remains an issue.

Check the current API reference and Cypress changelog for the behavior documented for your installed release.

Use cy.press() or cy.type()?

Need Use Example
Move focus, navigate with arrows, or trigger a single-key interaction cy.press() cy.press(Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB)
Enter words or form values cy.type() cy.get('input').type('hello')
Send supported special-character or modifier sequences cy.type() cy.get('body').type('{ctrl}c')

cy.press() does not accept multi-character strings, and F1–F12 are not supported. For named keys, prefer Cypress.Keyboard.Keys constants where available: Cypress cautions that key values can change. Letters, numbers, special characters, and multi-codepoint UTF-8 characters are supported according to the current API reference. See the cy.type() API reference for its supported text and key-sequence syntax.

Test focus and keyboard navigation

A useful keyboard test checks the outcome of the interaction, not merely that a key command ran. For example, after pressing Tab, assert that focus is on the expected control:

cy.press(Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB)

The selector and page path must match your application. Cypress’s accessibility guide also identifies in-page navigation and autocomplete as relevant keyboard-testing scenarios. For autocomplete, exercise the key your interface supports and assert the resulting suggestion or selection as well as focus where appropriate. A passing key-dispatch test alone does not establish that an interface is accessible.

Do not confuse Cypress app shortcuts with cy.press()

Open-mode shortcuts operate the Cypress app, not the application under test. The documented shortcuts are r to rerun tests, s to stop tests, and f to focus the specs window. Studio’s save shortcut is ⌘+s on macOS or Ctrl+s on Windows and Linux when Studio is open and has unsaved changes. These are separate from commands in a test. See Cypress keyboard shortcuts.

Troubleshooting cy.press()

  • The test types text but the page does not respond as expected: use cy.type() for words, field values, and supported multi-key sequences. cy.press() is for an individual key.
  • A key name is rejected or behaves unexpectedly: confirm it is supported by the API for your Cypress version. Use a Cypress.Keyboard.Keys constant for named keys where available; F1–F12 and multi-character strings are not supported by cy.press().
  • An assertion fails when chained from the press: cy.press() yields null. Put the assertion on a following query, such as cy.get(...).should('have.focus').
  • The key runs but focus does not move: check that the application’s current state permits that movement and assert the expected element’s focus after the command. A dispatched key is not proof that the page handled it as intended.
  • You meant to rerun or stop a test: use the documented Cypress open-mode app shortcut, not cy.press() in the test.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a screenshot of the resulting page rather than a keyboard-interaction test, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API request captures a URL as an image or PDF; it does not replace Cypress tests for verifying focus or keyboard behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can cy.press() send multiple keys at once?

No. It is for an individual key; use cy.type() for supported modifier sequences.

Does pressing Tab with cy.press() prove a page is accessible?

No. Assert the expected focus and behavior; a dispatched key alone does not establish accessibility.
