Astronomers reported cyanocoronene, a seven-ring aromatic molecule, in observations of the cold molecular cloud TMC-1. The 2025 study identifies it using a laboratory-measured microwave fingerprint matched to signals recorded by the Green Bank Telescope. Contemporary coverage called it twice the size of the previous record holder, but the study and institutional materials establish the seven-ring structure and record claim without specifying the metric behind that size comparison.
What is cyanocoronene?
Cyanocoronene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) with the formula C24H11CN. Its structure contains seven interconnected benzene rings and a cyano group. PAHs are carbon-based molecules built from fused rings; this detection extends the range of complex aromatic molecules identified in interstellar space.

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) described cyanocoronene as the largest individual PAH confirmed in interstellar space when it announced the result on 10 June 2025. That is a time-specific record claim, not a guarantee that it remains the largest after future discoveries. NRAO’s explanation of the discovery describes the molecule’s structure and how researchers matched its laboratory spectrum to telescope observations.
How did researchers detect it in TMC-1?
The team first synthesized cyanocoronene and measured its rotational spectrum in the laboratory. Rotational spectroscopy records the characteristic frequencies at which a molecule rotates and emits or absorbs radiation. Those frequencies serve as a fingerprint that astronomers can seek in data from space.

Gabi Wenzel and coauthors assigned 71 rotational transitions between 6.8 and 10.6 GHz. They then searched observations from GOTHAM—GBT Observations of TMC-1: Hunting Aromatic Molecules—made with the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope. TMC-1 is a cold, dark molecular cloud, a region where astronomers study interstellar chemistry.
The identification rests on the correspondence between the laboratory reference and the astronomical signal. The study reports several individually resolved transitions as well as a combined detection from spectral stacking and matched filtering, methods that combine and assess multiple expected signal features. The 2025 study in The Astrophysical Journal Letters gives the measurements and analysis.

What does the 17.3σ result mean?
The paper reports an overall detection significance of 17.3σ from spectral stacking and matched filtering. This is the study’s statistical measure of how strongly the combined signal supports a detection under its analysis. It is not a measure of the molecule’s physical size, nor does it mean cyanocoronene is more abundant than every other PAH.
The authors also derive a column density—the number of molecules along a line of sight—and report that it is comparable to values for several smaller cyano-substituted PAHs: naphthalene, acenaphthylene, and pyrene. They discuss this result in relation to the observed decline in abundance with increasing size and complexity among carbon chains. It is a comparison involving these molecules and this cloud, not evidence that large PAHs in general are abundant throughout space.

Does “double the size” have a precise meaning?
Chemistry World’s 19 June 2025 headline described cyanocoronene as “double the size” of the previous record holder. The primary paper and NRAO materials establish cyanocoronene’s seven-ring structure and the record claim as reported at the time, but do not specify the comparison metric behind “double.” Without that definition, the phrase should be understood as headline shorthand rather than a precise statement about physical dimensions, mass, or ring count.
What the evidence does establish is a seven-ring PAH identified through laboratory spectroscopy and radio-telescope observations. That is a substantive expansion of the set of interstellar aromatic molecules detected, without requiring an unqualified interpretation of the headline comparison. The paper appeared in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, volume 984, article L36; it is dated 30 April 2025, with the journal publication date listed as 1 May 2025.

Why does the discovery matter?
Detecting a larger, structurally complex PAH in TMC-1 gives researchers another concrete molecule against which to test ideas about how aromatic chemistry develops in cold interstellar environments. The result also demonstrates the value of pairing laboratory measurements with astronomical surveys: without a reliable spectral fingerprint, a candidate signal would be much harder to identify as a specific molecule.
