Drupal’s advisory (SA-CONTRIB-2026-170, dated 2026-09-23) names one affected project and two fixed releases: Webform 6.2.12 for the 6.2.x branch and Webform 6.3.1 for the 6.3.x branch. For an agency, the job is to find every client site running an affected Webform version, move each to the right fixed release, and keep a record of it.
What the advisory says
- Advisory: Drupal.org SA-CONTRIB-2026-170, dated 2026-09-23.
- Severity: “Less critical,” scored 8/25 by Drupal. This is a risk score, not a measure of how many sites are affected.
- Affected versions: Webform below 6.2.12, and Webform from 6.3.0 up to but not including 6.3.1.
- Fixed versions: 6.2.12 (6.2.x branch) and 6.3.1 (6.3.x branch).
- Credits: reported by Majdi Alomari; fixed by Jacob Rockowitz and Liam Morland.
Drupal describes the flaw this way: “Webform does not sufficiently validate an optional token query value before using it. Under specific configurations where a Webform is rendered for anonymous visitors, a malicious request can cause the request to consume significant resources leading to a Denial of Service.”

The advisory does not say which configurations count as “specific.” Don’t try to rule sites out on a guess. Treat any site with an affected version as needing the update. Sites that show a webform to logged-out visitors are the ones the description points to, so they are a reasonable place to start.

Where the “16 modules” figure comes from
A secondary article links 16 contributed projects and 36 CVE identifiers to a CERT-BUND batch advisory. We could not retrieve the official CERT-BUND record, so we can’t confirm how, or whether, those 16 projects relate to this CVE. Drupal’s own notice covers only Webform. If your team is tracking a 16-project batch, check each project against its own Drupal advisory. Don’t assume CVE-2026-96365 applies to all of them.

A per-site workflow
1. Inventory
For every managed site, record whether Webform is present and enabled, plus the installed version and branch. On Composer-managed sites, composer show drupal/webform reports the version. With Drush available, drush pm:list --filter=webform shows whether the module is enabled. Check production, not just the repository, because deployed code can lag behind.
2. Classify
| Installed Webform | Status | Target |
|---|---|---|
| 6.2.x below 6.2.12 | Affected | 6.2.12 |
| 6.2.12 or later 6.2.x | Fixed per advisory | None needed |
| 6.3.0 | Affected | 6.3.1 |
| 6.3.1 or later | Fixed per advisory | None needed |
| Other branches | Not covered by the advisory’s stated ranges. Check the advisory page for your version. | Not stated |
Grouping sites by branch is a practical way to batch the work, since the two branches have different fixes. That grouping is our suggestion. The advisory doesn’t prescribe a rollout order.

3. Update within the branch
Use the fixed release for the branch each site is on, so you avoid an unplanned minor-version jump. For Composer sites, a typical command is composer require drupal/webform:^6.2.12 for 6.2.x sites or composer require drupal/webform:^6.3.1 for 6.3.x sites. Adjust the constraint to your project’s policy, then deploy through your normal pipeline and run database updates (drush updatedb) if your process calls for it.
4. Verify
Confirm the deployed version on the live site (composer show drupal/webform or the Extend/Status report in the admin UI). Then submit a few key forms to check that rendering and submissions still work.

5. Record
Keep a simple tracker with one row per site:
- Site and environment
- Branch and version before the update
- Target release
- Date deployed and who did it
- Post-deploy verification result
This gives you a clear answer if a client asks whether they were exposed, and when they were fixed.

With a “Less critical” rating, this is a routine but prompt update rather than an emergency. Order work by exposure: public sites that render webforms to anonymous visitors first, then sites where forms are only for authenticated users, then sites where the module is installed but unused. If a site can’t be updated soon, remember that a denial of service affects availability, not data. Your hosting or WAF team may have request-level options, but the advisory doesn’t offer a workaround, so updating is the only fix it confirms.
