ChatGPT can help you spot subscriptions to review, find realistic spending cuts and build a savings plan—but it won’t cancel services or guarantee you’ll save money. Give it accurate figures and clear limits, then verify every suggestion against your statements and current provider terms before acting.
How to use these prompts safely
Start with figures from recent bills or statements, and say what you need to protect: for example, a service you rely on, a minimum grocery budget or a debt payment you cannot reduce. Ask ChatGPT to show its assumptions, separate estimates from confirmed amounts, and rank options by savings and inconvenience. Do not treat a generated estimate as a fact until you check the original bill.

OpenAI’s Finances in ChatGPT documentation says eligible users in the United States can connect financial accounts and ask about spending, bills, subscriptions and budgets. The documented account connection uses Plaid; credit-data connections use Experian. Availability and features can change. OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot pay bills, change account settings, or open or close accounts. The prompts below work as planning aids whether or not you have connected accounts.

Seven prompts for finding possible savings
1. Find subscriptions to review
Prompt: “Here is my list of recurring subscriptions, with the amount, billing frequency and next renewal date where known: [paste list]. Identify which ones I could cancel, downgrade, replace, share, negotiate or pay less often. Estimate the monthly and annual savings for each option, state your assumptions, and rank changes that would have the least effect on my quality of life. Do not assume a plan or discount is available unless I can verify it.”
This prompt makes the trade-offs visible instead of treating every recurring charge as expendable. Check the actual renewal amount, date, cancellation rules and what features or content you would lose. An annual plan can reduce the monthly equivalent while requiring a larger upfront payment and making a refund harder to obtain.
2. Look for realistic spending reductions
Prompt: “Here are my monthly expenses and the period each amount covers: [paste expenses]. Suggest ten realistic ways to reduce spending, ranked by estimated savings. Separate easy changes from options that require a meaningful trade-off. Show the calculation and assumptions for each estimate, and flag any item where you need more information.”
Include enough detail to distinguish fixed bills from variable spending, and note irregular costs that a single month may miss. Ask for reductions that preserve necessities and commitments rather than simply ranking the largest charges.

3. Build a 30-day savings challenge
Prompt: “Create a realistic 30-day plan to save $500, with specific actions, dates and estimated amounts. Treat $500 as my target, not a guaranteed result. Here are my income, bills, variable expenses and constraints: [add figures and constraints]. Show a lower target if the numbers do not support $500, and do not recommend skipping essential bills or taking on debt.”
The $500 is an example target embedded in the prompt, not an established or typical outcome. If ChatGPT’s total depends on estimates, check whether the suggested changes could actually happen within the month and whether they shift costs into a later billing period.
4. Cut grocery costs without ignoring needs
Prompt: “Here is my grocery budget or list for [time period], plus the number of people, dietary needs, foods I already have and meals I need: [add details]. Identify avoidable costs, lower-cost substitutions, meal ideas using overlapping ingredients and sensible bulk-buy opportunities. Give an estimated savings range, explain assumptions and avoid suggestions that conflict with the dietary needs or storage limits I listed.”

5. Find cheaper alternatives to routine spending
Prompt: “These are routine things I pay for and what I use them for: [list]. Find comparable lower-cost or free options, including resources I may already have through memberships, a library, used or refurbished purchases, DIY, or services already available to me. Rank options by likely savings and convenience. Explain what functionality or quality I would give up, and mark anything I need to verify locally.”
Ask for alternatives that match the actual need rather than a superficially similar product or service. Check eligibility, location, condition, recurring fees and any costs required to switch.
6. Challenge a nonessential purchase
Prompt: “I am considering buying [item or service] for [price]. Challenge whether I need it using my stated budget and priorities: [add context]. Calculate the opportunity cost of buying it, suggest lower-cost alternatives, and estimate what I would retain by not buying it. Separate facts I supplied from assumptions you make.”
This is a way to pause and make the trade-off concrete, not a substitute for your own judgment. A calculation based on an incomplete budget can make either choice look better than it is.

7. Make a workable monthly savings system
Prompt: “Help me design a realistic monthly savings system. My take-home income is [amount and frequency]; my fixed expenses, variable expenses, debts and current savings are [details]. Suggest a payday savings amount, spending limits and categories to monitor. Show a conservative version, identify assumptions, and do not recommend reducing required debt payments or essential costs.”
Check that the proposed payday transfer leaves enough for bills and irregular expenses before setting it up yourself. ChatGPT can help organize a plan, but it cannot make or change the transfer on your behalf.

In a September 13, 2026 article, Elton Jones of Tom’s Guide said he reviewed six recurring costs: Patreon at $12, HBO Max at $18.49, Netflix at $21.76, Hulu and Disney+ at $76, Crunchyroll at $10.88, and Experian at $27.21. These are the author’s reported figures from that article, not current market prices.

Verify a suggested cut before changing a bill
Subscriptions and trials
The FTC advises checking renewal terms and amounts, knowing how to cancel, marking trial or renewal deadlines, and monitoring statements after cancellation. Save the cancellation confirmation and notes from any conversation with a provider. The FTC also warns: “Remember that some ads might be designed to make you click, not tell you the truth about the offer.” Read the terms rather than relying on an AI summary or promotional wording. See the FTC’s subscription and free-trial guidance.
- Compare the actual monthly and annual cost, including any introductory rate expiration.
- Check the renewal date, cancellation deadline and whether cancellation ends access immediately.
- Account for lost features, content, ads, usage limits and switching costs.
- After canceling, look for a confirmation and check later statements for another charge.
Utilities and other essential bills
If a utility bill may be unaffordable, contact the provider promptly. The FTC notes that payment arrangements or budget billing may help, but budget billing is an estimate: if usage exceeds the estimate, an additional charge may follow. Ask about fees, credits, settlement adjustments and local consumer protections before agreeing. The FTC’s utility-service guidance explains these considerations.
Estimates, connected data and higher-stakes decisions
Verify amounts and dates against the provider’s bill or your original statement. Connected financial data may not reflect the latest transaction or every relevant account, and AI-generated answers can be wrong. For legal, tax or investment consequences, OpenAI advises consulting a qualified professional; do not rely on a chatbot as the final authority for decisions with those consequences.
