Choose customer satisfaction (CSAT) to measure how the interaction felt, customer effort (CES) to find friction, or Net Promoter Score (NPS) to track broader recommendation intent. They measure different things, so a short survey should not automatically ask all three.
Copy-ready customer service survey questions
Use the question that matches the decision you need to make. Replace bracketed text with a detail the customer will recognize, such as a recent case or issue. Keep the question focused on something the customer could observe.

Customer satisfaction (CSAT)
- “Overall, how satisfied were you with the support you received?”
- “Based on your recent interaction regarding [incident], how satisfied or dissatisfied were you with our service team member?”
- “How would you rate your overall satisfaction with the service you received today?”
These questions ask about satisfaction with a particular interaction. The second example, published by SurveyMonkey, names the team member; use agent-specific attribution only when the interaction and response sample make that interpretation fair.

Resolution and effectiveness
- “Did we resolve your issue today?” (Yes / Partly / No)
- “Did you get the help you needed?”
- “Was the solution clear and complete?”
- “Do you still need help with this issue?”
These questions can reveal unresolved cases and prompt a service-recovery follow-up. A “No” or “Partly” should have a clear route to appropriate help rather than being recorded only as a low score.
#1 Best Overall
- PREPRINTED: These receipts are pre-printed with common salon services but also include a blank line for added flexibility. There is a space for operator's name as well as the amount due per service and a total amount due.
- PERFORATED: The pad is perforated on top allowing one for your records and other for check out at the register.
- BULK PACK: Each pad includes 100 sheets that are numbered in sequence for easy reference.
- CONVENIENT SIZE: The pad measures 5.25" tall and 3" wide making it easy to use and store.
Effort and ease (CES)
- “How easy was it to get the help you needed today?”
- “How easy or difficult was it to resolve your issue with us?”
- “What made getting help easier or harder?”
Choose a consistent response scale, label it clearly, and document which end represents less effort. There is no single universal CES scale wording established here; consistency is what makes results interpretable over time.
Agent interaction quality
- “How courteous or uncourteous would you say our team member was?”
- “How knowledgeable or unknowledgeable would you say our service team member was?”
- “Did you feel confident in our agent’s ability to help you?”
SurveyMonkey provides these as examples. Pick one or two dimensions tied to a coaching goal instead of asking customers to rate every agent trait after every interaction.
Optional open-ended follow-up
- “What was the main reason for your rating?”
- “What could we have done better?”
- “What can our employees do to improve?”
- “Is there anything else you’d like us to know about this interaction?”
Open text gives context that a rating cannot, but takes more effort to answer and is harder to summarize. Make it optional when the priority is a quick response.
Broader recommendation intent (NPS)
- “How likely are you to recommend [company/product/service] to a friend or colleague?”
- “Based on your interaction with our support team, how likely are you to recommend our company to a friend or colleague?”
A neutral follow-up is “Why or why not?” Salesforce publishes the support-team version as a sample. NPS asks about recommendation intent, not whether the specific support contact fixed the issue.

Choose the measure that fits the question
| Measure | What it asks | Best fit | What it cannot tell you alone |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSAT | How satisfied was the customer with this interaction? | A post-ticket, post-call, or post-chat satisfaction pulse | Why the customer was satisfied or dissatisfied, or whether respondents represent all customers |
| CES | How easy or difficult was it to get help or complete the resolution? | Finding friction in a support process | Overall company loyalty or the full quality of an interaction |
| NPS | How likely is the customer to recommend the company, product, or service? | Broader relationship or loyalty tracking | Whether this particular support contact resolved the issue |
Pick one primary metric based on the decision at hand. Add another only if you will use its result. A short post-contact survey need not combine CSAT, CES, and NPS.
Build a short, answerable survey
Start with one decision
Decide whether the survey is intended to measure interaction satisfaction, effort, agent coaching, unresolved cases, or broader loyalty. Questions serving unrelated goals can make the survey longer and less clear. A practical starting point is one quantitative question plus one relevant, optional open-ended follow-up.
Ask about a specific event
Refer to a recent case or interaction where possible. Customers can judge what happened during their contact; they may not be able to assess processes or decisions they could not see. Avoid asking two things at once, such as “How satisfied were you with the speed and friendliness of our agent?” A single answer cannot identify which part shaped the rating.

Choose the invitation moment and channel for the interaction
Feedback is more useful while the experience is still recallable, but the appropriate delay depends on the service context and channel. There is no universally established send interval. NiCE recommends making a survey finishable in under five minutes; treat that as practical vendor guidance, not a proven optimum.
Interpret voluntary responses carefully
People who choose to respond may differ from those who do not. NiCE notes that especially satisfied or dissatisfied customers may be more likely to answer. Where practical, track invitation and response context, and do not treat voluntary feedback as a perfect census of every customer.
Score results consistently
Calculate CSAT from the stated scale
For the five-point example above, count responses in the two positive categories—satisfied and very satisfied—divide by all valid responses, then multiply by 100:

When reporting a result, state the question, scale, denominator, and response count where possible. Keep the item, scale, population, and calculation consistent when comparing periods.
Use conventional NPS bands correctly
For a 0–10 recommendation question, the conventional categories are 9–10 promoters, 7–8 passives, and 0–6 detractors. Calculate NPS as the percentage of promoters minus the percentage of detractors. These categories are a scoring convention, not a support-quality standard.
Do not mistake a broad benchmark for a support target
SurveyMonkey’s September 23, 2026 guide reports 74.4% as an average US customer satisfaction score, but the guide does not make the underlying measurement period or comparability to support-interaction CSAT clear. It is not an established contact-center target. Prefer a benchmark matched for industry, channel, question, scale, time period, and population, or use your own consistent prior results. The sources here establish no universal minimum sample size.
Turn feedback into service improvements
- Route unresolved needs. Use “No,” “Partly,” or “Do you still need help?” responses to identify cases that need follow-up.
- Look for recurring themes. Review comments and ratings for repeated issues, such as unclear instructions or avoidable effort.
- Compare like with like. Examine trends by comparable channel and interaction type, and consider sample sizes and operational context.
- Choose a fix and assign ownership. Use recurring feedback to prioritize a process change, agent coaching, or another specific improvement.
- Close the loop. Tell customers what changed when appropriate, and use subsequent feedback to see whether the issue continues.
NiCE describes using survey feedback in quality management, coaching, and service improvement. A score alone does not improve service, and one response should not stand alone as a verdict on an agent.

Ways to deliver and manage surveys
A basic survey can be run with a form or general survey platform. SurveyMonkey describes tools for building, distributing, analyzing, and acting on survey feedback. For contact centers, NiCE describes CXone feedback capabilities covering web, email, and voice survey delivery and analysis. These are examples of product categories, not comparative endorsements. Relevant selection factors include channel support, workflow integration, reporting, scale, accessibility, language needs, data handling, and cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are good customer service survey questions?
For interaction satisfaction, start with “Overall, how satisfied were you with the support you received?” Add a question about resolution, effort, or a relevant optional comment only when it serves your survey goal.
How many questions should a post-support survey have?
A practical compact survey can use one quantitative question and an optional open-text follow-up. SurveyMonkey also describes two or three questions as a compact target; these are vendor recommendations, not a universal experimentally proven optimum.
What is the difference between CSAT, CES, and NPS?
CSAT measures satisfaction with an interaction, CES measures how easy or difficult it was to get help, and NPS measures likelihood to recommend a company, product, or service. Use the measure that matches the decision you need to make.
How do you calculate CSAT?
With the five-point example in this article, divide the number of valid responses in the top two positive categories by all valid responses and multiply by 100. Report the scale and denominator with the result.
Should customer service surveys include an open-ended question?
An optional open-ended follow-up can explain a rating, but it takes more effort to answer and is harder to summarize than a fixed-choice question. Include it when the added context will be useful.
When should a customer service survey be sent?
Send it when customers can still recall the interaction, while accounting for the service context and channel. No single universally optimal delay is established.
